There's nothing wrong with "cinematic" games as long as the story/tone fits the gameplay, whatever constitutes gameplay. Max Payne 3 is basically Uncharted without all the basic platforming and puzzle-solving, but I find it more entertaining thanks to the satisfying gunplay, '80s action movie story, and less of a repetitive level design formula. There are plenty of games with mechanics so fun that you won't care if they don't change things up, but when it comes to cinematic/story-driven games, the major element of films developers should learn from is pacing. The movie adaptation of Uncharted will likely be more enjoyable than the games for me because I (hopefully) won't see the environment collapse a million times.

Interactive movies like Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, as well as any Telltale series, are games, adventure games without puzzles most of the time, but I have different problems with them. Quantic Dream lets you have a significant say in their stories, but the stories are silly, unintentionally funny. Telltale has better writers, but the gameplay is braindead simple and lazy even for a modern adventure game (last I played was Borderlands, watched Minecraft regrettably, then Batman), and the production values don't really serve the emotional impact well for me. There's a lot of potential for great modern video game stories, and I think we just need to look at classic adventure games. The Secret of Monkey Island, I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream, Grim Fandango, Syberia, just to name a handful. These are excellent games with excellent stories. I wish big developers would make games like these. The only things I'd modernize are the visuals and a few obscure puzzles.
