How fares your empire, /gsg/?

/mbg/ fag here, I've decided to give EUIV a try and I'm liking it so far, I think I understand trade which is one of the hairy topics in the game, but I'm having problems with land warfare, my armies get fucked even against 4 times smaller armies I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, my morale is at top and I've played just as powerful nations so far. I'm using art of war DLC, I don't know if that changes anything.
Also I'd like to know if it is worth buying the rights of man DLC.

Borneo is also one of the core islands of Indonesia. A fully realized "gross-but-not-overblobbed" indonesia would logically not have borders drawn halfway across an island, and would include all the Malay-speaking lands.

All we're seeing here is present-day Indonesia with Malaysia and a few very tiny breakaway countries (SG, Brunei, Timor L'este) annexed.

Yo I'm playing as persia in HPM, with that NNMHPM thing from the pastebin that brings back ahistorical shit from NNM. Everything's been going fine before now, but I just got the silver age event and the game crashes whenever I mouse over the Amir Kabir or Dar Al Fuun decisions. Has anyone else had this problem? An update on AAR progress: the gameplay portion of the AAR is now entirely finished. My screenshots are sitting at about 250 total right now (IE it would be 250 posts at this point), but it'll probably get cut down to about 200 total after some editing. After I edit and organize the screens I'll take down some notes about the playthrough so I don't forget and gradually move on to the writing process.

Work has started to really pick up as of Tuesday, so I'm actually spending more time right now than I should getting this organized and ready, but I've realized that the AAR is likely to have some quality issues based both on Downfall and on me playing and writing it separately (not even to mention without thread input), so I'm willing to take the hit to try to preserve quality as much as I can.

The AAR almost certainly won't be posted for several months yet. But I will gradually chip away at it as I have free time, and hopefully it'll be in a good state to post by mid-June, which should be when I'll have my first reliable free time in quite a while.

As a final note, I don't think I'm ever going to do an AAR in this way again. Playing and writing with such minimal thread input on the narrative is almost certainly going to wind up producing a poor product, or at least one devoid of a lot of the flavor which I want to characterize my AARs. This is something I was concerned about from the start, but I had hoped I'd be able to mitigate it. I really think that's not going to be possible now, and for the sake of assuring quality in future AARs I'll make sure to play them concurrent or mostly-concurrent with my posting here.

No, I've got everything, at least until I get to the actual writing portion. Once there I may want to add some flavor language here and there, but if I do run into instances of that I'll just post here and you can respond whenever you see it. I'll use my trip in the future whenever asking for anything specific so you can just search for it, and if you miss it anyway it'll be fine.

>He wrote that there never was mention of a “Schlieffen Plan” before 1920. Instead, he argued that when one historian wrote that Germany employed the wrong strategy, the generals and other members of the General staff, Kuhl, Ludendorff, Foerster and Groener, countered with the myth that Schlieffen had conveyed his master plan to Moltke, but that Moltke failed to understand it.
>According to Zuber, Schlieffen did have some contingency plans, although they remained in his possession until he died, and were not locked in the vault with the rest of the German war plans. Zuber insisted that on its own, the Plan, or Denkschrift was a nightmare, poorly organized, and called for troop numbers that never existed. Schlieffen’s war games, as evident in his writings and handwritten diagrams, did not resemble the master plan, or anything close to it. Zuber based this argument on the newly discovered German staff memorandum, prepared by Major Wilhelm Dieckmann. Dieckmann was a German officer whose task was to write a history of the war, and he therefore had access to many of Schlieffen’s notes, and war plans before Allied bombings during World War II destroyed them. According to Zuber, Dieckmann’s manuscript revealed that Schlieffen’s “Plan” intended to keep the East strong and hold off the French by defeating their fortification line. Schlieffen never envisioned swinging wide around the Paris and defeating the French army.

>Do what I do senpai, or was gonna. Play out a segment and take live input on decisions or what to do, and when you're ended for the day, write events.
Writing events is beyond me, I'm absolutely slow as fuck with putting in new decisions/events in-game. Usually I do polls for major or questionable actions, and this AAR is no different for that (I hosted about 3-4 polls in the course of it when I was going to make some iffy calls and wanted input), but actually customizing my AARs in that vein without cheating/savegame editing isn't something I can really manage.

That said, the whole problem with this AAR was play-by-play. I have so little time right now I couldn't really afford to let /gsg/ have much input, because it would slow me down enough that I probably wouldn't have even been able to finish the playthrough part of it before work picked back up.

Future AARs will go back to the original model, where I play and write concurrently during the day, then play and write a little ahead at night, followed by posting some of my stashed content during the day until I catch up to my current progress. Then rinse and repeat.

And I don't have any other vampires that aren't too lewd for a blue board, sorry anon.

>>
What is the point of the Immortal trait for your ruler in EUIV? So you can always have a 6/6/6 ruler instead of having decent national ideas? Is it ever worth it?
>>
>>166070180
Maybe the order of the decision is wrong.
Instead of changing to italy and giving cores, it gives cores then changes to italy.
>>
>>166070385
But it gives cores to the whole region for Italy, which it does when the decision is taken, but only for same culture it adds cores. Like with Savoy it adds Lombard, for Naples it adds Sicilian, and with Urbino it adds Umbrian only. The only line that says "add_core" is for Italy and the Italian region.
>>
>>166070341
The game is piss easy, what are you talking about "is it worth it?". Worth it for what? Winning?

The only reason to play this game is for fun, not have a challenge or anything like that. So with that in mind the point of the immortal trait is to give players another option for "fun".

Worth it when it seems like for 800 points you could get so much more from ideas and provinces.

Thought I guess having a guaranteed minimum 72 monarch power per year could be useful.

I'm just trying to make the most OP custom faction to start in a new world.
>>
>>166070385
Actually I moved "change_tag = ITA" to the first line after effect = { and now it works. Not sure what was up with that.
>>
>>166071227
I think it was giving cores before changing country.
If you form a country based off a region, like Italy or Russia or Great Britain, it gives you the blue claims which don't expire and are region based on that region, like Italy gets claims on Italy, Russia on Russia, Britain on the Isles.
>>
>>166071340
That's good to know. I'll have to check the rest of the nation forming decisions then. Thanks for the suggestion and the help. I wouldn't have thought to mess with the order of the lines.
>>

Alright, the world at this point is pretty much completely fucked, UK has 750k pops, and thats the second highest of any civilized nation.

The zombies went pretty much everywhere, which is great, UK recolonized their island but it is still completely occupied, although the actual zombie modifier that creates them goes away in the 1850s, but comes back once the second plague starts when Africa is colonized.

The AI doesn't colonize in cores of other alive nations, so the first thing I'm going to do is make an event that triggers in the 1850s that remove all cores of provinces you don't control if you fell to the zombies (You get the defeat flag if you fail to retake your capital by 1850 and it is controlled by zombies). This should allow better colonization

The next thing I'm going to do is give a completely insane growth modifier event that only fires once for nations with less than 100 people in their capital, hopefully being able to bring it up to 1000. Countries with less than 1000 in their capital will get a similiar, weaker event.

This culture map is pretty ebin too, all the blue scattered around is noculture, completely depopulated areas.

Every four years you elect a ruler.

You can relect your last ruler, or you can pick a new ruler from three categories, administrative, diplomatic and military.

They have 4 in the primary ruler skill and 1 in the others.

Each time you re elect a ruler, the ruler gains +1 in each ruler skill.
You also lose republican tradition, so having republican tradition among your national ideas lets you re elect leaders more.
>>
>>166072267
nice work anon! Im liking your progress, but i have 2 questions/recommendations.

1. can you change the noculture colour? If it were uncolonised land white it would make more sense

2. could you make an event where if a country loses some of its cores, but gains enough strength, e.g GP, 100 prestige, etc. to reclaaim its homeland?

Eh, I kind of like the zombieland thing, just to see the other cultures escape to the far reaches of the world, although it does get autistic when the middle of Italy is Tibetan and Afro-Brazilian, I'd have to think about it.
>can provinces lose the zombies modifier after about 10 years, since later in the game the occupation disappears but the modifier stays, so a lot of random 0 pop provinces stick around that have "owners"
Already mostly fixed. I made 2 events, one that fires after 1850 that removes the zombie modifier from every province and adds the defeat flag if your capital has the modifier, and one that fires in 1855 that removes the modifier from everything, no matter what. The 1 population provinces will get rarer, but there's nothing you can really do about them except waiting for a country to repopulate them, pops still move to them.

I'll have to put in an event to increase liferating though, most of Europe ends up at 25, Asia even lower, and Arabia and Siberia at 0

Despite victory in the second Weltkrieg with the timely intervention of its estranged ally Austria-Hungary, it again came at a cost for the German Empire. As during the first Weltkrieg, a cabal of senior military figures within the Old Guard of the Heer have gravitated all power towards them to the frustration of S.K.M. Wilhelm III von Preussen. Wilhelm III, who many see as an extremely moderate and even liberalizing Kaiser, is powerless against his own government. The young Austrian Kaiser, S.K.u.K.M. Otto I von Habsburg, is reported to be monitoring the situation with "intense interest", leading a bloc of non German-aligned countries within Mitteleuropa, fracturing the post-war victorious Allies.

Meanwhile, the attack on Irkutsk by the Japanese government, called "a date that will live in infamy" by Baron Wrangel, has prompted Imperial Russia to formally enter the Entente, widening the front between the thrust of Raj forces in south-east Asia, to the chilly expanses of the north. Elsewhere, following an overwhelming syndicate victory and the passing of syndicalist hero John "Jack" Reed, the torch of the workers has been passed to the moderate socialist Norman Thomas, who vows to completely rebuild North America with a new partner in the Socialist Republic of Canada.

As someone who has never ventured outside of HoI, is it worth getting Victoria 2?

I am extremely bored with how set in stone the HoI series is, any serious deviation from historical events (especially with the major powers) usually completely gimps the game. Either it gimps it with weird events or it gimps it because the AI can't handle whatever it is you did (early invasion of England as Germany is near guaranteed way to win the game, paradrop behind Russian lines and the entire game becomes so boringly easy you might as well start anew). Add onto that the fact that it follows a timeframe of about 10 years and it leaves you with very little ability to do something with you country of choice other than follow the historicla events to a large degree. As such it becomes more of a wargame than a grande strategy game, but then without the military depth of an actual wargame.

If I were to get vicky, would I be plagued by the same problems? Or is there a real possibility of changing the historical fate of a country without it making the game go pants on head retardedly wonky on you?

The lastly, how "mandatory" are the two expansions? Is the game completely unplayable without them? Or is the base game good enough to play to form an opinion of the game?
>>
>>166083521
Vicky is popular essentially because of that, you can change the outcome of a country as much as you want AND see the results. You will, however, certainly feel frustrated with how simplistic wars are in all senses, from battles to peace deals.
>>
>>166083521

HD and HoD are both mandatory.

You're only saying HoI, but, y'know, which? There are many HoI variants that are still more-or-less playable: HoI2, Darkest Hour, HoI3, and HoI4.

And as for Vicky, yes, it offers you much more of what you want. Its technology system is based on literacy, which is an element the player has more control over than leadership in HoI3 and less control over than industrial score in HoI2/DH, which I think is a good balance. It's also got a very dynamic economy (although don't expect miracles), a wonderful system for handling culture/religion/population in POPs, and pretty decent government flavor depending upon your ideology, particularly with mods.

That said, as >>166083809 points out the war system will disappoint the shit out of you. Even if you're coming from DH (which I doubt) the system is still more simplistic, a very simple balance game barely more complex than EU4. That said, I disagree with peaces being less complex than those of HoI3, and I think Vicky actually does a decent job with peaces (although not as good as EU4 has become, as odd as it is for me to say that).

Expansions are mandatory, as mentioned. Absolutely unplayable trash without them.

>>166083809
Well I find HoI3 to be simplistic in its warfare already anyway. The only real complexity is the sheer amount, for the rest it makes very little difference what you build or how you use it. Place it, send it in the right direction, win. The fidelity isn't enough to actually be able to make use of tactical encirclements or tactical anythings for that matter. The logistical system is so simplistic it might as well no exist, you can race your armies from east to west as fast as you like, won't make a rats ass of a difference to their ability to be properly supplied. It wouldn't bore me so much if the game actually allowed me to deviate from history, but despite its claims of being able to do exactly that, it really just ends up making the game unfun and often just plain broken.

So ya, if the rest of the game is good, I won't be annoyed by simplistic warfare per se. If I can attempt some African colonialism/influence with Russia without it causing the British and French AI to go AWOL on me because they all of a sudden are lacking the colonies they historically were supposed to have then that would be the sort of game I would play.

The expansions though, really that necessary for a first play? Because if not I would rather play through the base game once, then get the expansions after. If those expansions however really change the game drastically that is probably a bad idea.

(I have played all the HoI games, well aside from IV, and I find they all suffer from the same problems one more than the other, but essentially the players ability to deviate significantly from history without it breaking the game is close to non existent)

Just pirate the game at first if you're worried about whether you'll like it or not. Hastebin link in the OP links to a Russian site with the download and expansions. Site's legit, you just need to sign up and you can download them. Try it out, and if you like it (and care) you can buy it.

But yes, you'll like Vicky, then. French and British AI won't freak out just because they don't have something they historically did, Vicky isn't deterministic in that sense.

Although some elements of Vicky, especially when using HPM (which I do recommend) are slightly railroaded in that they reduce the opportunity for things which are too ahistorical. Russia, for example, lacks the Scramble for Africa CB in HPM (although it can still fabricate CBs on uncivilized nations in Africa, merely for a higher infamy cost and a longer fabrication time). Those examples are relatively uncommon, though, and help the final result to be roughly historical without being entirely deterministic, so I do support them. Also, even if you don't really like them, the amount of other improvements in HPM really make up the difference.
>>
>>166085314
Money isn't really the issue, I splerg out on Matrix Games&co all the time. Time is the issue, any and all PDI games take hours upon hours upon hours to get to the midgame, and even more to get to the lategame, and it is usually only here that the problems I mentioned become evident.

Also now that we are talking about the other games anyway, I guess CK2 is even less deterministic`In the sense that I can shape my land and its people whatever way I see fit.

I am basically looking for the most "free" GSG, and HoI was most definitely not it.
>>
>>166084543
Completely unistall the game (even documents folders) and reinstall. Similar issues in vic can most often be fixed like that
>>
>>166085880
Well, considering that you can become the Aztec Hellenistic ruler of a reformed Roman Empire in CK2, with a Mongol wife and a child named NiggerFucker, yes, I'd say it's the least restrictive of them all.

Don't take that as necessarily evident of its quality, though. I don't want to say CK2 is bad, because it's probably the GS I've actually spent the most time in, but it gets very boring, very quickly. If you think HoI turns out the same way all the time, CK2 is very similar once you get past the honeymoon phase.

That said, if you choose to roleplay with your characters' traits and are willing to let your empire collapse around you every now and then in order to keep yourself from snowballing and allow an organic narrative to develop, CK2 gains quite a bit. I definitely think it's the game most suited to AARs, and that creating your own narrative while playing it really adds to the value of playing.
>>
>>166085880
Vic 2 has, in my opinion, the best balance of freedom and plausibility.
As >>166086326 said the freedom in CK2 allows you to do almost anything, no matter how unrealistic, but in the end that means that once you learn how to minmax everything then nothing is really that challenging and it gets boring.
In Vic 2 you can change the destiny of your country significantly, but generally only within the bounds of what's historically plausible; for example you can play Spain and re-establish the Spanish empire but you can't play as Spain, conquer the world and then convert it all to Zoroastrianism.
>>
>>166063374
Fair enough I suppose. I forgot you said that your last AAR was the only chance you had enough time. Still, your writing is compelling, looking forward to seeing it again.

And there's always vampires that straddle that nice middle ground. Have some cute to go along with your lewd.

>narrative
Now that is a great way of putting it and is basically exactly what I miss in HoI. If you don't intentionally slow down your pace and take all of the world with your hopefully better than the AI's intelligence, then the games becomes a boring cakewalk. However if you do pace yourself, then there is nothing that rally makes the game interesting, no government positions to really change, no flavor armies to make, no real diplomacy etc. Just waiting around stocking supplies untill the war events come around at which point you do some battles with leaders that get lost in all the countless of stacks, no way to tell one division apart from another other than a number, so no real interest in following a single armies "path to victory" either.

I guess part of it is the poor AI as well, I never feel like I am having conflicts with other countries and their leaders, and unless I but them there myself, there are rarely if ever any roadblocks getting in my way of achieving my goals. Really it is only ridiculous stuff like "capture the globe with Albania" which is impossible, but that has more to do with the numbers making it impossible than the AI getting in the way (the entire map could be empty with not a single enemy military unit on it, and still I would doubt you could achieve that goal as Albania).

Because paradox has a monopoly on the genre, they have it in a stranglehold so tight nobody else bothers with the genre.

Paradox has been using the same engine for years with the same design philosophy. The only thing that has really changed after vicky 2 was the decision to move to a heavy DLC sales scheme. Other than that all their releases are variations of the same game.

There is no real innovation, it is one of the first things to die in an unthreatened monopoly.

So for the past few days I've been toying around with modding for Vic2. Took me a bit but I feel like I have a general understanding of where all the different files are and how most of them interact. My concern has become that I've been trying to "gut" the base game so as to start with a clean slate; remove countries, cores, events, etc. Unfortunately, it CTDs despite everything I've tried. Anyone have any experience or advice in this regard? Is there a "barebones" mod or perhaps a mod that has already stripped most things out that I can crib from?

Without further context its hard its hard to say for sure, but it seems to be implying that the "she" engaged in something unnatural and taboo. Likely candidate given the timeframe would be engaging in anal, something that the girl on the phone wouldn't do with her "jeffy" due to their love being superior or more true. Like I said, big guess.

Related: How the hell is #2 at all considered "dirty?"

I thought it was something like that. Awfully convoluted though, especially for a one-off joke Why would the phone couple be discussing a completely separate couple's sex life?

I'm assuming you know the flour represented cocaine. I guess it's "dirty" because it's a subject not considered appropriate for kids, thinly veiled behind a baking product analogy?

I play eu4 coop every now and then with some players, I'm thinking of suggesting a later start as pirates.
1700 hundreds start maybe, start with 5-8 islands I guess depending on location, 800 points, use raid coasts and privateering for money.

I'd go with either merchant republic or dutch republic as government I think.
Religion depending on region, but could go with animist or whatever anywhere really, just pretend it's some weird pirate religion, but probably norse if situated in baltic sea, confucianism if chinese pirates.

Thoughts?
IIRC not too long ago some anon was playing as chinese pirates here.

Babby here, trying to play HoI III as Italy for the first time.
My question: given threat, the UK guaranteeing etc, can Italy afford to conquer Yugoslavia, Greece and Bulgaria before WW2 starts (don't care about Albania since you can get it by event)? I'm afraid I can't afford this threat-wise, especially since I already start the game at war with Ethiopia.

Also, which should I go for first? I'm planning to take Yugoslavia first, then Greece (through a naval invasion, they have only two victory points and both are coastal) and then Bulgaria (two front war, pincer movement with my marines from Greece to their coast and my infantry from the West).

lads need some tips on playing inca. First run i colony snaked to Brazilian colonies, but got hit with a big european disease penalty (+33% cost on most mechanics). Is there a way to remove this? In the description it reads 'expires never.' any other tips would be helpful in general or with regards to reforming religion(what does it actually do?)

>but got hit with a big european disease penalty (+33% cost on most mechanics).

>>
>>166101541
>or with regards to reforming religion(what does it actually do?)
Reforming your religion gives 80%(I think) of the technology levels of the one you reform from.

So if they're at 10-10-10 and you're at 1-1-7 you suddenly have 8-8-8.
You also get all their institutions embraced.

My last game when I reformed my religion was a while ago, but I got attacked by spain, agreed to their demands and gave up some provinces and then reformed my religion as soon as their core was done.
>>
>>166101663
so you dont take any tech except to maybe 4-5 for unification of incan lands? the revolts from the reforms are also fairly big(40k troops better then mine), and try to hide from euros?
>>
>>166101836
Haven't played much of incas.

I started a coop game as Quito recently, but one guy in NA ragequit.

I was at 1-1-6 in tech.
Portugal was at 7 mil tech, I had some coast in colombia through muisica and awarakan I think migrated to the coast there so I annexed them.

When I played Maya and reformed I was at mil tech 1-2 and got up to techs 15. Developed with all the mana before that.

Do you have forts?
You've probably played further than me as inti, but I found it the mountain forts useful for beating down the rebels.
Really sucks that they had more cavalry than I when I haven't even met the europeans.

I think since RoM it can be useful to tech to dip tech 3 so you have som colonial range, so you can get borders faster.

If you're Carib or one of the migrating natives in south america you have vision over the caribbean, and you can become inti by conquering Lima and form Inca.
Then as the portugese colonize the islands you can reach them through the coast with dip tech 3.

In HoI 3, what are the big differences (arguments for and against) annexing a country vs making it a puppet?

In HoI 4 annexation means you get all the resources and industry but practically none of the manpower, while a puppet still keeps its own armies (though you cannot control them, unless they're sent to you as expeditionary forces). Is it the same in HoI 3 or different?
>>
>>166102326
There is no reason to take this idea group if you are not going for a wc, you will have enough adm points to core anything you want, economic or even innovative is a better pick in most situations.
>>
>>166102415

No, but you can in HoI 2/DH.
>>
>>166102536
>if you are not going for a wc
If you plan to core just 1300 development you'll save more paper mana with administrative ideas than you would with innovative ideas if you took both at tech 5.

There's no idea group that saves more mana than administrative unless you flat out refuse to expand.

You will still have enough admin to core anything you want, also innovative is a shit grouo that you should only really take in the middle to late game for the policies.

Administrative is not a bad idea group but its only use is to save you some admin points which are not really a problem if you are not going for a wc, economic on the other hand gives you money, reduces inflation and autonomy and the two best policies in the game.

And you'll have more admin power to spend on other things and you'll have the mana on hand faster.

If you don't think mana is important then go ahead and play a game with an immortal 0-0-0 ruler.

That you don't find administrative very valueable when you go for comfy borders as switzerland doesn't really matter.
It is the better idea group if you want the better nation.
That you can core anything you want because you only want 10 provinces is not an argument.

>some admin points
More than anything else.
Not some.

>economic on the other hand gives you money, reduces inflation
I guess to that I could just say "You will still have enough ducats to buy anything you want"
>>
>>166103558
It's just NWO 1.07 with the CB's from 1.12 + the additions Russbro posted earlier.

I couldn't get the provinces from 1.07 to work with 1.12, resulted in an instant crash. Oddly enough, I tried to load up 1.12 with ZERO modifications, straight from the rar and I got an instant crash on 'adapting history' or whatever.
>>
>>166103653
>It is the better idea group if you want the better nation.
It depends on the nation you choose to play as. If you start as the Ottomans the yes you can take administrative and just expand as much as you want since no one is going to stop you.

If you take a smaller nation than taking admin ideas would be pretty much pointless since it doesn't let you expand at all
>>
>>166103165
>I'll give the CSA cores on Florida
Make sure they only get those cores when the US is dismantled though
>>
>>166104220
>If you take a smaller nation than taking admin ideas would be pretty much pointless since it doesn't let you expand at all
Yes it does.
Play as an opm and you'll have plenty of time to grow and use administrative ideas.
>>
>>166104772
What I was trying to say was that mana is not the most important thing ihn the game, a strong economy and military are more important. Your admin points won't save you from a stronger enemy like a better economy or military could.

Incompetent people can't manage mana and so a meme was born that everything that saves it is automatically god tier. But it's not, it won't let you expand faster it just saves points thats it.

No, it is about learning about all the obscure mechanics and then applying them along with figuring out how the subpar and needlessly cumbersome UI works. PDI games, at least their GSG games, require very little thought. You don't need to have a tactical masterplan to take Russia as Germany in HoI. No need to think long and hard about how to take over all of Africa as England.

I mean that the AI is lackluster is easy to see even for me because... 1st game after watching Arumba for like 7 videos on youtube. Grab Muscovy. Expand to have 2nd largest army and conquer pretty much all Russia, Alaska, a bit Australia and all New Zealand.

AI can't be good if a moron like me can do that on normal first try.

But troop movements... Well it really kicks my butt, what can I say.

The reason HoI is garbage nowadays is because they have no competition. They can churn out the same games year in year out, based on the same basic design principles and engine, and people will still buy it. Innovating costs money, and is also a risk, safest option is to make games you know will sell.

Look at HoI4, lots of controversy over that game because of the changes it tried to bring, when at its core it doesn't really differ that much from their other games. Sure there are a bunch of mechanics they changed and the graphics have been highly polished, but AT ITS CORE, it is still a game that is very "paradoxy". Let anyone who doesn't know HoI4 play it without telling them it is a paradox game, and they will know anyway withing 1 minute of playing because of all the elements this games has and the way it plays.

Arguably HoI4 is MORE paradoxlike than the other HoI games, which were more like nichegames within a nichegenre. HoI4 is their most played HoI game, so from a business POV it made perfect sense to bring it more in line with their other games. As long as this remains true, don't expect to se any great innovation in the GSG genre, not from PDI anyway.
>>

They want the Civilization audience now because they know they will make mad buck from watering down their existing games in the most retarded manner possible, so people completely clueless about strategy games can try them out and feel good for annexing the Soviet Union as Poland on their first playthrough.

From a business standpoint there is literally no reason to innovate when there is no competition.

Loyal fans are too spoiled or too blind to stop purchasing their garbage products in an attempt to make them go bankrupt or announce to other developers that they are awaiting a worthy grand strategy contender.

It's really just unit movements. All the rest I've managed so far.

> be Russia
> want dat Commonwealth territory
> have TONS more man power
> try to move around with 4 armies of about 80k each

Fuckers move around me like nothing and when I finally manage to catch a 40k army they manage to swarm me with a bunch of 15k ones and kick my ass.

Maybe it's the unit types I have? In an 80k army I have about 50k infantry, 6 cavalry and the rest artillery.

Also I have 90 in prestige so I would expect my morale to be high, but looks like nope.

Also I have same technology level.

On the topic of AI, when is PDI going to spend some time on improving it? It really is the main "bottleneck" of these games.

No matter how much they change, add or improve the mechanics, the AI keeps remaining shit game in game out. So much so that if you want to have a challenging game you have to gimp yourself severely and intentionally, or play an AI nation for a bit propping them up to be an unstoppable powerhouse before switching back to your own nation, at which point you are arguably playing a game against yourself.

> On the topic of AI, when is PDI going to spend some time on improving it?

Probably never. AI is a really tough thing for anything but simple problems. With something as complex as the PDI games, you can probably never get a competent AI.

Look at how much time they took to get AI competent enough to beat people at chess. Even then it's not so much AI as it is bruteforcing as many solutions to a problem with simple rules and a relatively finite set of solutions.

Not him, nor do I play EUIV, but I know for a fact that EU4 uses a mechanic known as "combat width".

It is, at its base value, 15. This is the front your army can occupy in any given battle. So if you fight another army, you can deploy 15 regiments. Combat is also done in 2 rows, a front and backrow. So in total 2x15 regiments can be deployed.

So your army could contain the entire earth's population, but it would still only use 30 regiments at a time in any one given battle, the rest will be held in reserve to be thrown in once one of those initial 30 gets depleted or destroyed. So if your troops are inferior, you can not use a "human wave" strategy and try to overwhelm the enemy army purely with numbers. Not by stacking one massive army and throwing it at the enemy anyway. A better way would be to spread it out and cover more land than your enemy can, or have multiple battles over a long period of time in a war of attrition.

You can hover over the morale during battle to see the modifiers.

Like morale from army tradition, morale from specific ideas, from advisors, from prestige.

About the movement I think the AI has been getting better at moving troops in recent patches.
>>
The thing you guys are all missing though, is that the AI isn't even been worked on. it isn't a case of "PDI did their best, the ad AI is a result of hardware bottlenecks", no it is a case of "PDI games sell with or without good AI, why but thousands of manhours into programming a competent AI when only a fraction of our playerbase will ever play the game above difficulty setting "normal"?"

Eu4ArmyComp.png

>>166111360
Ideally you'd want your artillery to match your combat width.
Artillery is the only unit that can damage from the back row, they also give half their defensive Pips to infantry in front of them.

Artillery don't deal that much damage early on and they're expensive, so you'll most likely settle for less artillery, focusing on getting them up to certain siege bonuses and then bringing the into battle based on that rather than their potential during battle, since if you really wanted to improve your damage during combat by spending more money you'd be adding more cav which is probably not worth it either.

This isn't fully accurate and a little outdated since paradox decided to remove the combat width modifiers from terrain for bad reasons.
>>
>>166111360
>Should have more infantry and less artillery. Like, having > 15k artillery is useless but having tons of infantry is good to hold the line while artillery does damage
Ya, and a large part of that is because of the combat width combined with the 2 rows formation. As long as you have infantry to replace the front line infantry that dies, your units in the backrow are relatively safe (safer anyway). I you have not enough infantry and too much arty, it will at some point start replacing lost front row infantry with arty in the front row. Arty in the front row doesn't do to well.

Here's your reply, now fuck off.

Populism is also about basing your policies around what will get votes. This is irrational, I could even get votes by claiming I will abolish all taxes for example; some people would want that.

Non-populist politicians will do what they believe to be correct, not necessarily what will get votes. Here in the UK this is a majority of what MPs are like, hence everyone always moans. At least they understand politics and what is better in the long run.

Brexit was a vote against non-populist politicians like Cameron and for populist politicians like Farage. Cameron knows how to be prime minister. Farage knows how to appeal to votes. This is why we are in the shitter at the moment.

Populist politicians do the same shit, they just lie to you about it and since you are dumb enough to fall for appeals to emotion, claims they are different and accusations you believe in them.

Or even worse, they do like most populists and establish a crony-capitalism system.

Both were unelectable. Everyone with half a brain knows it. Both cheated, because they knew they can't win fair and square. The HRC was just less competent at it, because she was so sure of her victory that she didn't commit enough effort to the campaign to win it. You can spindoctor details one way or the other till stars burn out, but this is the real core of the issue.

Populists and their voters love to lump groups of people together and claim they all agree with eachother, ie how all politicians are somehow evil fucks that need to be removed. This is part of the problem and is literal lying.

And don't say hurr durr I'm ironic because I just lumped populists together. This is a tactic that ALL of them employ. And you know it to be true. This is not ironic.

Maybe it's a bigger problem in the US, in the UK there is no such thing as bribes, gifts, lobbying, and if it is caught they are imprisoned and fired. Corruption is not too much of an issue here with an extreme majority of politicians.

Honestly I'd rather have shit than populist shit. At least shit has the chance of becoming something good while populists only interest is hanging to power and profiting from it.

If both candidates are shit, there's something wrong with the system. Republicans had a lot of better candidates, so did the democrats. But Being a populist is usually better because you get more votes by manipulating people's emotions.

Yeah lobbying is allowed, sorry about that part. It is at least with regulation, and the nature of parliamentary debates (more of a discussion that succession of speeches) means if an MP pushes forward what they were influenced to do and it is outright wrong, it will likely just fall flat rather than pass.

The public education system, run by "regular" politicians. Not Le Trump, but politicians predating him by decades.

Your response seems to make the case more for mine. The difference between Venezuela and USA is that USA has had a much larger private sector in the past. No US politician in this election save perhaps Rand Paul and Gary Johnson was ever going to do something about it.

So while I'll admit I was a bit hyperbolic about "all politicians ever", it's pretty much every politician now.

The ebil populism meme. Please, stop. HRC was as much populist as trump. Her whole campaign was one giant appeal to liberal regressive mob. She flip flopped as much as trump did, had same near zero substance stance on issues. "Whatever gets me most votes on gay marriage" to quote a viral video.

America had a choice this election. Continue with corroboratory or try out a plutocracy. They made their choice. You judge it before anything of substance was done. This is folly.

Besides, scream as you might about how rusty russian nukes/planes/economy is, you can only poke Russia so much until it lashes out. Not that trump's own policy on china appears to be any better.

It is relative to the country you play as.

If you are a small merchant republic, trade ideas are high priority, if you are small duchy in the HRE diplomatic is much better, if you are a horde trade and diplomatic are not as valuable. Trade can be great if you are in a good trade nod in a good position, and can be useless if you in shit one.
Diplomatic saves diplo points and is good if you want to no cb war or brake royal marriages.

For Portugal and any other colonial play trough early exploration is essential
Remember that colonies are expensive, especially early on.
Influence is great if you are going to have many vassals or if you plan to keep long term vassals, or if you need to expand in areas where you cannot avoid AE.
Maritime is bad.
Espionage is ok if you are micromanaging diplomats to always have a spy network for tech and for reduced siege time. -0.10 corruption and cheaper advisors are also good. Cheaper claims mean you save points for cores and less AE.

Universally my ranking list would be
1. Exploration
2. Influence
3. Trade
4. Diplomatic
5. Espionage
6. Maritime

You need everything that diplomatic gives you.
One more diplomat early when you only have two is crucial for securing alliances and building spy networks.
+1 diplo relations means you can have a vassal or two while having one big ally and a few medium or smaller ones.
+2 diplo reputation is also good for keeping vassals in line for not getting betrayed by allies when AI declares war on you
+25% improve relations is great, AE goes away faster and you get improved relations faster
-10% dip cost is also good and can save a lot of points
And the finisher is also good as you will have to brake royal marriages and to change alliances.
>>
First time EU4 player here (but veteran of the first two titles and both CK's).

So let me get this straight: if you are in the HRE, the AI emperor will always come after you, even if you are allied to them, and call in all of their own allies against you, no matter how innocuous your CB but will pretty much ignore other AI imperial factions' wars of conquests?

The population of England was around 1.5 million in 1086. The Anglo-Saxon warriors at the Battle of Hastings were 0.007% of the English population.

Why did such a tiny minority of soldiers decide the fate of an entire Kingdom? Was the conquest really just the House de Normandie replacing the line of Godwin, with the average Saxon not caring little for the outcome?

A big part of why the Anglo-Saxon monarchy was dissolved so quickly after Hastings was that King Harold and a majority of the Anglo-Saxon warrior nobility fought at Hastings and were killed. Some remaining nobles thought of setting up the exile Edgar Aetheling as King of England through his claim, and William himself was expecting a longer campaign for the rest of England. The Archbishop of London upon William's approach however surrendered the city and crowned him as king shortly thereafter and the rest of the Anglo-Saxon nobility bent the knee after the fall of London. The average Saxon at this time didn't have any connection to the battles that happened unless they came directly to them or if they had to serve in the army as tribute, Norman rule of England did not affect these people much beyond the widespread application of forest laws that made certain areas illegal to hunt or farm in.

In fact I am convinced /gsg/ is the most shitposting general of all of /vg/, because there's so little content that after a while people have little to talk about. There's always patch note debate on /owg/ for example, new lol hero ideas, eve battles... Grand strategy games just cannot compete, and considering game-related discussion could easily pass on /his/, /lit/ and /pol/ this general just becomes a microcosm of these boards as a whole.

This vague idea of topic for discussion means anyone can just post some retarded map from 1811, say Austria should never have had access to the sea, and bam, 200 posts about non-gsgs but still related to the games so it has to be accepted.

Add to the mix the fact that this genre will typically attract the most geekiest, solitary and nerdiest of players (literally staring at maps for 1000s of hours) and there you go, /gsg/ is a hive of shitposting and villainy.

Yeah but R&I spergs out any time WitX is posted because "it's not GS"

Not rejects as such, just people who are like /pol/ but consider themselves better than them, despite being exactly the same in everything except board colour.

Hmm, sounds like a certain populist movement or two

>>166126974
SC2G doesn't count, that is literally >>>/s4s/ tier shitposting. I don't mean it in a meme way or to backtrack on my own argument about /gsg/ being the worst, because it is; /sc2g/ literally has NO game-related discussion so who knows why it even exists.

I don't mean to take sides or anything, but WitE is very different to GSGs, not that I would call it 4X, but it's more of a puzzle game in my humble opinion.

Like I would like to see it here because hey, game discussion, but there is an ounce of credibility to not wanting it. Not that the autistic screeching he does until the janny deletes it is productive for the board he seems to love to protect.

No. If you are in the hre, you can attack anyone except for free cities.
If you conquer a province you don't have a core on, Emperor will demand this province back when both of you are at peace and if you are not allies. Of you refuse, you will get unrest and separatism in this province.

>WitE is very different to GSGs
That's true, but HoI is very different from EU, CK is very different from Vicky, etc.

There isn't any very good definition of what "grand strategy" is. If it's not just "Paradox general," then we are forced to recognize that the threads connecting these games are more conceptual than anything else. The key similarity all these games seems to just be that every entity not controlled by the player also simulates "playing" the game, i.e. that every other country, dynasty, etc. is actively playing against each other and the player, rather than waiting for the player to interact with them (as in other types of games).
>>
>>166127791
It's a wargame. GS is a grand strategy wargame. It's closest to gs.

>>166127823
R&I is probably in league with the mods then
