I've kind of gotten tired of Eggman being behind literally everything that ever happens in Sonic's world and I wouldn't mind if they tried to bring someone else in for once. I believe the Deadly Six and Lyric could have actually been somewhat interesting characters if Sega actually tried with them.

I feel like Eggman is fine as he is, although I wish that he had the chance to be more like the comic incarnation of banter and threatening. That being said, he doesn't have to be Brevon level, cause Brevon isn't that great of a character. What makes Eggman unique is his genuine mirth when doing wrong, his playful banter, his 25 year long rivalry turned into a just "Well Sonic is here better go through the motions kind of aware of how it's going to go" but when it comes down to it will bring out the big guns when all is lost as he sees defeat looming.

Unleashed Eggman was pretty fine with this, Comic Eggman is pretty damn great at this.

Those were all final bosses, though. Eggman(or someone who appears to be Eggman, in the case of Neo Metal) is what kicks off the plot and he is who you usually have to fight before you get to them.

No, I'm complaining that for a majority of the time, Sonic and Eggman's encounters go the exact same way without any deviation. All I'm saying is Sega needs to either come up with something different to keep Eggman interesting or put some actual effort into making another villan for Sonic to square off with. I like Eggman, but I also admit that the franchise is in need of some variety with their villains.

The Deadly Six are boring villains with a boring plan. Eggman's plan relied on their plan failing and Sonic beating them just to have the duel.

The act of killing does not automatically make someone villainous. Would a soldier who killed an enemy be considered a villain? Probably only to close friends and loved ones to the person he killed. Now if that soldier killed an enemy, then made sure to go to his house, rape his wife, kill his kids, and then burn the house to the ground for shits and giggles? That is far more villainous, even downright evil.

Killing people for bad reasons is villainous, but for what reasons? Because you need to expand your army, you need to make an example, you just plain like doing it? A boring villain does it and shows no emotion, a good villain will enjoy the moment and savour it, a brilliant villain will have as much fun with it as possible.
Now, here's the thing, if you have a fun villain doing minor villainous things it comes across better than a destroyer of worlds who takes his job seriously. That's just business. A fun villain will make kicking a puppy more villainous than killing someone.

The Deadly Six were just one sided characters given villainy. Stereotypes of a certain emotion given life without commenting on why or doing anything fun with them.
Eggman took them over, got to chastise Sonic and make him learn a message about being a direct dickhead, and even played the whole cast to set up his Mech near the end. True he could have been better, but he was the standout star compared to the rest of the cast.

I guess it depends on your view of a villain.
I think a good villain has to have a good personality and to be engaging as possible with the protagonist.
Like, for example, Sundowner vs Armstrong. Armstrong doesn't appear until the end and he thinks he's doing good, he genuinely believes his plan will help America. Yeah he has to get his hands dirty, but it's for a good cause. Now his plans both include Sundowners part of business, and Mistral and fucking up shit and causing wars, I mean all Sundowner is doing is putting brains in borgs, but still.
But Sundowner knows he's doing a dick move. He's a big time villain. He laughs at 9/11, he jokes at child soldiers, he guffaws while shoving his sword into Africans. He does less evil but while being a lot more evil about it.

Basically, you can be more of a villain kicking puppies than killing people if you put the mental effort into it.

Personally, I feel that is a very dumb way to judge a villain in a story. The most important thing should be the villain's character. A good villain is one you want to see doing villainous things, whether it be because they're hilarious, utterly evil, or sympathetic. A bad villain is one who just does shit for the sake of moving the plot along while being utterly boring about it, no matter how much destruction and suffering they cause. Chaos would be a bad villain if it was regularly a villain, because it's lack of personality would make it get old, quick, and the novelty of a big water creature would wear off. Eggman is a good villain, despite being incompetent, because he has an incredibly entertaining personality to make up for it. Kain in Soul Reaver is an amazing villain, because he clearly has motives beyond "hurr I'm evil", it feels like he's always in control of the situation, and he's an very eloquent speaker who gives arguments that actually make you question if he's entirely in the wrong. A villain is a character and should be judged as one.

Chaos isn't a wild animal. We know this because it could communicate with Tikal like any other person. Eggman is never shown actually controlling it, either. There is nothing that suggests that the chaos emeralds can control Chaos at all. What we do know is that Chaos breaks out of the M.E. (maybe because of Eggman, but it's doubtful as we never actually see any evidence he had direct involvement with it, and Knuckles would have noticed considering he was right there), Chaos attacks Station Square of its own volition, and then shows up whenever Eggman calls it out to gobble up the one or two emeralds he has acquired. How can he use them to influence Chaos if they aren't in his possession? Chaos was also responsible for destroying the entire Echidna civilization, and, given that Tikal still sealed it up after the fact, it doesn't look like it planned on stopping with just them. Chaos went mad with rage when Pachamac and his soldiers harmed (killed, even?) the chao around its shrine, and became evil within that madness. It was still crazy when it broke out of the emerald, because if it had calmed down in the meantime, Tikal wouldn't have thought there was no way to calm it down. It simply bided its time until it had all the emeralds (which Eggman was very willingly and helpfully feeding it) so it could resume the destructive rage that Tikal had halted.

Again, I want to point out that we never actually see Chaos deliberately follow Eggman's orders. It comes whenever Eggman has chaos emeralds to feed it, it hangs around Eggman, and it defends itself whenever Sonic & friends attack it. It never does anything out of the way for Eggman.

Indeed. I'm of the opinion that it needed a reboot at some point, but I think it should've been later than it was. The fact that the comics are not the games makes them special in a way, and even though the reboot is a lot closer to the games, it's still different enough imo that it's got charm. That and the creative team cares more about the cast and setting than Sega does, even when it comes to the Sega characters (Seriously post-reboot Archie Knuckles is the best he's been written in over a decade)

I feel really bad for the people invested in pre-boot era stories and characters. For instance I have a friend who was HEAVILY invested in the Knuckles story and was devastated when the reboot happened and he lost everything. Especially considering that some characters for a time remembered everything about the past and neither wrote it down or let Knuckles know about what he lost, even if Knuckles would be hurt by it. My friend just never got any kind of closer for it and it hurts him.

The comic currently just isn't the same for him and it's hard for him to enjoy. I feel regret even showing him the comic long ago since it's hurt him so badly.

To be fair the memories thing was Paul Kaminski's idea, not Ian's. Ian was pushing for a hard reboot, but Kaminski wanted to sell trades that never came out
