So why didn't Kaede just legitimately kill the mastermind instead of going through with Rantarou's fake death stuff? Because the odds are stacked against them. They don't know anything about the location they're at, whether anyone else other than them is alive somwhere out there, etc. the fake death not only gave a reason for the mastermind to be executed / killed, it also gave Rantarou the freedom to find out more about what happened and how to get out.
