Pretty much, no one in there cares. I just gather while people in the FC goof off with everything else. That's how it'll go in the update, too. That's all we use Diadem for, a place for me and another to gather. I've always hated Diadem for anything else, but it makes me money because no one else gathers and the materials have value for crafting or even just selling what I don't use

Damage mitigation, mostly. WHM has untraited virus and e4e, and while those are okay, almost all of the big damage in this tier is magical (so not affected by a str/dex debuff, plus I think e4e needs a physical attack to be triggered), and that shitty virus still puts the one minute immunity buff on a boss after it rolls off. Whereas Disable has no such timer and is a flat 10% potency decrease that works equally well on physical or magical attacks, plus even a diurnal AST can mitigate 10% damage with Collective Unconscious. Nothing needs to be said about scholars mitigation power.
Also I don't know that you would classify it as utility, but it doesn't have the MP management that AST and SCH has. Not really an issue if you're doing flawless, fast kills, but if shit is really sloppy you will run dry until you get to some sort of long phase change like the QTE in 11 or the ultimate in 12

Not even. It's just that WHM only excels in healing which can be made up for by the SCH assisting the AST ja tiny bit more. Same with shields, nobody will cares about AST shields because you have SCH and eos. They care about cards which WHM has nothing to match. All three healers can do good personal DPS, but surprise, WHM is the one with the worst MP sustain, so you have AST doing about 100-200 personal DPS less at worst + whatever card buffs they bring.

Cleansing debuffs is not a major part of raiding in this game. If you're cleansing warrior pacification, don't even bother (unless it's an emergency, like an add has spawned that the OT has to pick up and he's pacified).
What healer you play doesn't matter as long as you know what you're doing. It will help you a lot to have all of the healing jobs leveled as that will make it easier to find a group and to know how to work with your co healer.
You can expect to be badgered about playing AST if your group doesn't have one though. DPS beg and plead for AST cards like heroin addicts who've already cashed their welfare checks and need a hit. And I'm not exaggerating.

Untraited e4e is the same skill with a longer cd, untraited virus is useless at the moment because the last raids have been full of magical damage (you can still use it on adds though)
The only thing WHM is lacking compared to the other healers is a raidwise mitigation, but it's not like you need it if you're not in a 2-5-1 party, as SCH/AST's is more than enough.
The MP management can be an issue if there are no dead times, otherwise you make it sound worse than what it actually is; as for dpsing WHM has the best burst by far and can reach higher numbers than the other two, and the same can be said for his healing output.
People are all over AST because of balance, which aren't mandatory during progress, and that's it.

How important is it for healers to DPS? That is another shortcoming of mine. Switching into and out Cleric Stance takes a lot of brain power for me right now so I typically just ignore using it. I only attack if I have a lot of down time.

Only an autist will expect high DPS from you while you are new or learning a fight. It's considered very important if you want to excel, although it's purely icing on the cake. Your group ain't gonna wipe in any of the current stuff because of low healer DPS. It becomes much, much easier with practice. Almost everything in this game is memorization and as you learn a fight you'll figure out when you can DPS and just how much you need to heal. Don't worry too much about it right now while you're new, but I would try to keep dipping your toes into the pool to get used to it. If somebody dies because you were trying to push DPS it's not a big deal, there's a certain amount of trial and error involved in these things.

Except it's not, there is literally no reason not to dps whenever you can, and each single damage in this game is scripted so you have plenty of dead times which you can figure out after a couples of try at most.
A great healer can maximize his dps while healing the less amount required, but everyone can and should stance dance in each fight.

Primarily: Get your cross class skills, tank without provoke or dps without their essential cross class is just awful. You unlock all the towns (except Ishgard) after a level 15 quest, and can from then on pick up any class you need or want. The exception to this is the HW jobs, which you need to get to 3.0 content to unlock.
Secondarily: Read your skills, avoid the aoes, and ask questions about anything you're unsure of. Also, though this is more personal preference, please don't make obnoxious chat macros out of your skills.

There's some class-specific things bad players do, but with experience in other MMOs you should be fine.
Just keep in mind: This game is slower than WoW. It definetly doesn't feel slow later on, but from 1 to, like, fucking 45, damn-near 50, most classes feel slow.
-Aggro in this game is more of a thing than in modern WoW
-Potency is an accurate measure of how strong an action is
-Don't worry about Materia at all unless you're levelling crafters or gatherers
-Most mob drops aren't worth a damn and can be safely vendored
And a little tip: At Level 17, you can unlock Palace of the Dead; a randomly-generated dungeon with an independent levelling system that, when you complete parts of it, gives you good chunks of EXP. It's the fastest way to level as DPS, but as a Healer or Tank, regular dungeons are better due to queue times.
Take it at whatever pace, and have fun

The most essential cross classes can be broken up by job type.
Tank:PROVOKE. Its utterly essential for tankswaps and grabbing aggro back if you fuck up. Flash for WAR, Awareness is a nice QoL. Foresight. All of these come from GLA/PLD with the exception of foresight which is MRD.
MeleeDPS: Blood for Blood, comes from lancer 34 and is utterly essential. Internal Release from PGL.
RangedDPS: Basically everything from archer.
CasterDPS: Swiftcast. Comes from THM 26, utterly essential.
Healer: SWIFTCAST. Raise has an 8 second cast time, you absolutely need swiftcast. Ridicule anyone healing without it. Cleric Stance, Protect, and to a lesser extent Stoneskin from CNJ, and Eye for an Eye from Arcanist.
As for how the system works, it should be fairly obvious from your skill list. You have X amount of cross class slots, level dependent. And the cross classing is limited by job. IE: healer is incapable of cross classing provoke from GLA.

1) if I'm going for a black mage and I'm only level 25 (15 archer) should I just only stick with gear that I get from quest or should I go buy stuck from the shops/market board
