The junction system isn't bad, it's just different. Previous FF games gave you a hammer and nails and asked you to hammer the nails in. The junction system gives you a saw and asks you to saw a board in half. You can break the game quite early with it actually. Expericast gives you exp based on the bonus level you're casting. Potency of the spell is irrelevant. The enemy you're fighting is irrelevant. any experience gained through expericast is multiplied by any current EXP multipliers (food buffs)

It's 140 x magic level. So if you get to the max of 99 (which takes like 20 coins) you'll be getting just under 14k experience per cast, and you'll have three or four casts. It adds up.

They messed up by making status effects too good or totally pointless. Should have taken a page from XIII's book where status effects were surprisingly useful for a FF game and felt potent without trivializing every single fight. I'm not even sure how they did it, but they really made those kinds of "niche" elements in other FF games feel important in XIII (nul-magic, slow, haste, etc.)

In RK, if a boss is weak to Berserk, for example, then it's also programmed to use one of its strongest attacks repeatedly under Berserk making the status pointless. If they are weak to Blind, then either they never hit you for the rest of the battle or they use magic 99% of the time anyway.

I know it's not "FINAL FANTASY" (it's been pretty dumb even in the main titles) but man I wish there was, like, a weak version of status effects that don't really cripple the enemy but still allowed bonuses that look for status effects to apply.

Like, I dunno creative names for them, but like a "weak poison" that ticks for about the damage of a back-row white mage rod hit, but counts for the extra damage of Poison Shell, or "stumble" which just knocks off, say, 10 SPD (negligible on most bosses that matter),

And they'd proc if the stronger versions couldn't work, and then you could actually care a little about some abilities.

Give you an example of what? You switch to 2 sabs, debuff all the ones that it's not immune to, watch the chain skyrocket, and kick its ass in under a minute. That's how most hunts worked out. Story wise I guess it's ok, since bosses are immune to all the good sab skills.

paralyze is strong as fuck when it stops a boss from using an ability, but it doesn't just stop them entirely dead for a bunch of "rounds". and DoTs are pretty weak but there's a bunch of them with elemental flavour, like a small DoT + slightly lowers an attribute related to that elemant.

strong enough to have dedicated support roles in that game, but not really enough to cheese whole bosses. sleeping Fafnir or rotating Bards for maximum melee unga were just legitimate tactics that still took setup and execution, rather than just being a free win for bringing the correct spell against the correct boss.

Bosses are NOT immune to all the good SAB skills - that's exactly why SABs are amazing. You can regularly cast Imperil, Deshell, Slow, Poison, and so on against bosses. They are almost always immune to the super potent disables like Pain, Fog, and Daze but that's good or they would actually be rendered trivial.

None of it feels incredibly overpowered and yet it almost always feels worth switching to SAB to inflict them. That's good balance. It might be related to the fact that XIII made the status ailments dependent on enemy resistances instead of a flat proc % associated with the skill.

it just seems a bit limiting having 2 characters, can't form swap in combat, and unstacking seems not really a viable thing for the most part. don't you just end up making both L&R good at everything? i like builds, roles, asymmetry etc.

Unstack only if you're gonna topple. But even then I'd pop a wobblestop. Unstacking can let you spam item use if you're in a jam. Also avoids your whole stack dying to instant death.

L&R have the same stats, excepting that L has 10 more strength, while R has 10 more magic. What makes them unique are the mirage gems you give them. Also use skill seed spots. You get plenty and you can replace it later if you want.

My current combo are pretty different. I have L for physical/aoe/stack topple/defense. He can cast shell and protect. R is for magic offense/debuffs/recovery. She has regen/faith/brave and usually acess to ara/aga spells, though right now I have her with the Flare gem.

What monsters are you using? Are you transfiguring them? Going in and out of giant form? I really prefer L&R to be the middle part of the stack but some Medium monsters take up that spot and are too good to pass up. Plus, in the giant forms, L&R get their elemental affinity attacks (based on monsters in the stack)

my Lann i mostly think of like a Dark Kn'Thief, lots of counters, cleaves, and drains to be a self-sustaining phys damage. dark eyes, ice bats, behemoths, mimics, mandragoras.

Rayne is more spellblade-y and support i suppose. birds, dragons 'n fairies, and the like.

i'm not sure i get transfiguring. like i might see a mob has 2-3 visual forms, but on another page it'll mention like a whole list of ????? transfigs, so i don't think i know what that actually means.

i tend to be jiant/lili based on whatever seems the more powerful stack at the time, considering elements for the region. though i like rayne in jiant because i'm a degenerate pervert, but not a degenerate pervert that likes chibi.

in order for a monster to transfigure into its other forms, you'll have to have caught it with a prism or at least gotten a "memento" item dropped from that enemy. then, from serafie's case or a save point, you can switch their form.

Cool thing about transfiguring: all the passive stats transfer no matter the form. So, baybehemoth with all those HP+, STR+ and so forth? When it goes to behemoth, it keeps them. That will make your monster massively stronger.

Some additional forms simply unlock at higher levels. To stick with my example, I think baybehomoth can unlock behemoth form at level 26. If it says requires "????" then you have to meet that monster to transfig. And you can transform them at will (as long as you have access to the prism case), meaning there is no penalty to switching back and forth. it can really open up your options.
