gameplay is pretty solid. It plays like a mixture of Dawn of war 1 and CoH2 (the LoS parts).
Basebuilding is better than dawn of war 1 because it doesn't feel tacked on.

that's reassuring, at least. Haven't liked anything i've seen so far, especially the pastel looking colours, hopefully they've done some changes since the announce trailer.

not played CoH2, loved the original though. glad to see base building is on form, hopefully they don't do some faggy beta where people complain about it and they change it. loved the original dow since it was a scifi command and conquer (was like 8 at the time, had never heard of SC or 40k...) and it pushed every button. How tactical is the combat? Is it closer to 1, or 2? Wasn't a fan of every unit having multiple buttons/abilities in DoW2.

Also, what factions did you get to play as? Just Imperium by the sounds of it?

combat in 1 was far more tactical than people give it credit for. In a MP game, blobbing will be punished pretty heavily by flamethrowers or unit abilities like grenades. Heroes are not as OP as people like to think. they are more like dow2 heroes as in they will form the basis of your army but will die off if you mismanage them.

The space marine snow mission. Same as every other streamer.

I personally liked the colors. DoW1 was pretty bright, and you can always use the army painter if you want more darker tones.

The best thing I liked is that they are open to using ideas from both their own RTS games and other ones. For example, you can't reinforce in the field unless you have an APC like the Metal bawx. It makes those units have an interesting niche in the army.

Honestly, the particle effects were accentuated by the snow and lava on the map.

Head for the Badlands.

Eight Peaks will typically have a full stack as well as a big garrison guarding it.

As the greenskins I have a lot of throw away armies with basic troops or just random dumb shit followed by proper armies with the better options.

The gobbo general made it out and the next turn Azhag goes in there with another warboss and clears it out easy. Then the gobbo army was remade and sent out to soak again.

Roleplaying with a bit of strategy is the best way to play IMO

Don't. You're better off with another organ gun or cannon. Or even infantry. They don't do enough work after they drop bombs, and they don't have enough bombs. Of course, last time I tried them I wasn't good with gyros.

They're good against monsters or clumped infantry. They can also harass the shit out of missile units, and their bombs are enough to rack up over 100 kills per battle. Just don't use bombs on units with small numbers or loose formation unless you have to. You can press them into melee combat in a pinch, but they aren't made for it, and won't survive long against melee troops or cav.
>Gyrobomber
Same idea with the bombs, except you have more payloads to drop. If used properly, they can rip elite units to shreds, and keep applying pressure for a while after running out of bombs. They're not the best at sniping heroes or lords, though. And being limited to 1 model per unit means melee is a bad idea, even against weak missile units.

Of course, practice is the best way to figure out what works. Force yourself to use gyros when you can get away with it, and eventually you'll not want to leave the Karak without them.

It is the result of a really scummy strategy by CA where they release some half-assed campaign alongside a race, and bump up the price because of it. No one enjoyed the eye-for-an-eye campaign, and no one enjoyed the seasons of revelation campaign, but people still payed full price for the dlc because they wanted the new factions. Its just ok and it lets you go through the motions of warhammer total war with some flashy spectacles and monsters but that's it. The best strategy I've found for out-horsefucking the huns is to play as either roman empire and get equites dalmatae with the tier3 horse upgrade, which allows you to catch and destroy hunnic horse archers before they kill your other, better cav.

I enjoy the mini campaigns but I don't like how it's factored into the price as heavily as it is. Where WoC = £6 and BM/WE = £14, so that's £8 you can say is going to the mini campaign. It is pretty ridiculous. They are also nowhere near as good as the Rome 2 and Attila mini campaigns.

It depends on the faction and what you have honestly. I struggle with VC because they have no archers so you can't just kite the LL around the map, whittling him down. Plus, if they have archers and your garrison doesn't you just lose by default.

2 crypt ghouls, 1 grave guard I think and 2 skeletons? is a terrible garrison, I'd take miners and quarrelers over that any day. With that one, you can certainly kill an LL.

Want to play a total war game, never played one before. Suggestions?

Thinking of going for either Shogun 2 or Napoleon since I'm a fan of muskets, doesn't have to be one of those though. I enjoy difficulty and complexity so the TW game that has the most of those two is the one I'd like to play.

Shogun 2 is a good starting point. If you want more muskets, grab the Fall of the Samurai. Way more guns in that DLC and it's standalone. Warhammer also fits your criteria if you want muskets, if you can tolerate the fantasy aspects of it. Dwarfs and humans both get gunpowder units, artillery and footmen alike.

Basically all German thought up until the end of the second world war was worshiping Prussian ideals.

Austria was far more Cosmopolitan and closer in thought to the French more than anything else. Self-aggrandizement was the order of the day.

Prussia/Germany felt like it worked to get where it was and deserved the world.
Austria had heard stories of its long lost ancestors working to get where they were and then enjoyed ruling a large chunk of the world for a long while and came to view it as their right.
Prussians/Germans were similarly arrogant, but it was built off more substance to begin with.

Modern day Germans still have the same mindsets but they put up mirrors and lenses and end up appearing and behaving quite different to either the Austrians or Prussians.
The longest threads of continuity in German culture will be places like Bavaria, which enjoyed (relative) independence between larger powers, and made sure to perpetuate their own culture above all else in order to not be naturally assimilated by the bigger influences of the region.

It's been so long since I played vanilla M2 as a crusading nation and I remember being pissed off by how fucking early onset desertion is on the things. I think you have to move reasonably towards the crusading target from a sky view. So by sailing around Iberia technically you're going away from the target, and thus desertion hits. If you didn't make them a crusader army until they were at the straits of Gibraltar then you should've been fine. I think.

Rome is the easy, fun choice. Cool units, balanced faction, not really shit or OP at anything. Egypt is also easy and good.

Greek states DLC hs some good factions, like Sparta and Epirus. Hannibal dlc has some good grand campaign factions in it, like the lusitani.

Tips for Hojo, make friends with the Imagawa and Takeda (for now). Upgrade Izu to level two and build a market and sake den, upgrade everything. DO upgrade the market in Izu, NEVER upgrade markets anywhere else. Then stick a Metsuke in the settlement and watch the cash flow in

Go for the armour upgrade for Sagami's blacksmith over the attack upgrade. Research heaven and earth and build a + armour encampment upgrade. Your Ashigaru will have Samurai level armour (5) and will no longer be melted by archers. Which is great because yari ashigaru are one of the most cost effective units in the game and they should form the bulk of your infantry until late game.

You'll have to fight the Takeda eventually, but as long as you keep up trade, an alliance, and if possible a marriage (+ the occasional gift) they should be good for now, and they will do wonders protecting your flanks from the Oda/Hattori/Ikko. And upgrade that gold mine asap, it's a massive money maker with a metsuke.

Will have another thing I have to write in next few days and next week and such that will be a delay but as my schedule has cleared up things are looking good for having the enthusiasm to keep going. -I remember an old complaint about supermen bodyguards so all bodyguards will now be half the size of a comparable unit or half plus twenty - so on ultra melee inf are 220 (if elite) 240 (if normal/levy) men, which means a bodyguard inf is 160-180 on ultra, a bodyguard cav is 60-80 since cav is 120 men on ultra.

I also need to change the roman recruitment as I ended up gimping them when I thought everyone else had to recruit from three separate buildings when in fact non-barbar non-Romans (non nomads) recruit from 2 major city or 2 minor city.

I need to rethink ideas for the roman recruitment. Also since people said they were easymode perhaps re-introduce the tech-climbing to get Roman stuff or just jack up the price. While it's impossible right now (I think, last I checked back in the summer correct me if I am wrong) to import into warhammer I think it may be possible to export from it. I was able with the old methods in place to export models and open them in UU3D. However that process strips it of rigging and lods which means you'd have to remake those.

I seem to recall when I tried to just take a model straight from warham and throw it into an attila folder it would crash the toolkit/Tweak when I tried to view it.

So if someone was really committed they could, more feasibly with some empire or elf stuff given the generally same skeleton. Less humanoid skeletons like orks and so on and I am rather skeptical it's possible.

Also if you want to export a model from UU3D rather than just open it in it you have to be a good goy and buy it. I did way back and it's given me plenty of use from tweaks for R2 to Croc to Fote to tweaks to R2 models again for AE when it comes out.

In the case of that last one, when I have the FOTE update out of the way I will return to the little tweaks I was working on. My aim was more towards the ubiqutous unarmored guys and I was happy to largely (not entirely, if you try and crotch shot you see instead of a benis a horrible stretching of skin) fix it so an attila upper body, tweaked lower-legs work with the ubiqutously worn Greek Exomis which back in R2 only fit on a single faced body. And all the African bodies.

Now you too can properly have scantily clad greeks.

the one thing Western Europe really needs is more provinces; too many powerful nations are whipped out early because they only have 1 city. That, and/or provinces need to have lots of forts that are quite beefy and actually block movement, making them quite difficult to take until artillery becomes more advanced. By playstyle/campaign -

In shogun 2 by virtue of the map your campaign is ultimately always going to involve fighting the same areas, either the same factions or almost the same, using the same geostrategic dynamics. It will always end up in realm divide or the civil war dynamic of FOTS (I loved FOTS mind you). You will always be forced to go to Kyushu or whatever the capital of the Shogunate is. You will always either be marching west from east or east from west. Much of the island in the west is literally 2 provinces wide. The only way to avoid that is to play a short campaign.

Compare it to Rome/Medieval where there are different theatres where you can have a medium length campaign experience or more and not even experience the entire map. Western Mediterranean vs Eastern Mediterranean, or the Western half of the map vs the Central part vs the Far East. You play as Date or Uesugi and you will have to go to the center and west of the map if you want to do more than just fight 3 factions. You play as Britons and you can be exhausted with your campaign and not even have gone past modern day Germany and Sicily. You can play Bactria and have a full campaign experience before you reach Greece.

China isn't that linear but for warring states or romance of the three kingdoms it's still entirely concentrated on the narrow Yellow/Yangzhee crossroads. It's horsefuckers north, rice-eating monkeys south, and lots of ice and rock west.

The first level market gives +5 growth and 200 wealth.
The second level gives +10 growth and 500 wealth but costs 1 food. Each point of positive food gives EVERY province +1 growth per turn. A Rice Exchange actually results in less global growth per turn if you have more than 5 provinces, with higher level markets providing more local growth and wealth at the cost of lower global growth (with the exception of the final upgrade).

Enter the Metsuke. The Metsuke increases the tax rate of a province based on the number of stars he has in the Overseeing Town stat. The base tax rate for most provinces will be around 13-18% (depending on tax rate, tech and realm size), but a high level Metsuke can easily boost it to 50%+. The trick to this is finding provinces which have high base town wealth (Kyoto, Mushashi, Settsu), Very Fertile farm lands, and/or Gold Mines, and then maximizing town growth in these provinces. This is achieved by building high level markets, and if you're Christian, building Churches. Building markets in other provinces will reduce global growth, and thus extra growth that these money maker provinces are achieving.

Attila is a terrible entry into modern total war. Rome 2, Warhammer, or the Big Karl expansion are all better entry levels. Shogun 2 is fantastic, but it has a few different mechanics compared to today's total war.

But seriously, I would recommend getting Big Karl. It's a fun campaign and factions like Mercia make for a great introduction to Gen 3.5 Total War

Attila is pretty hard and you'll be completely overwhelmed by all the new/different features.

I wouldn't take Rome II though, it's ok but not good.
Warhammer is a good entry point if you like fantasy, otherwise take Attila with Age of Charlemagne and start with that.

They're not really pay to win, not many of them see use. The cheaper ones are fairly balanced and the more expensive ones are too expensive. Of those, only the slayers and warriors RoR are really noteworthy.

Empire only really use a luminark that is somewhat viable, and the luminark is stretch to begin with. Outside of that there are some okay artillery pieces but they're only really viable in battles bigger than 1v1.

VC probably have the best of the bunch but even then they're nothing well and truly outstanding.

Altdorf and Marienburg are massive money makers. Focus on upgrading them both early on. If you wipe at the Skull Munchers and Red Horn Tribe early on you should only need 1 stack to defend allowing you to spend some serious dosh on making even more serious dosh. Dwarfs make bank, so many of their provinces have gold and gem mines. Its almost impossible to no roll around in money

same as Dwarfs. While their buildings for gem and gold provinces aren't as good, you still make a fair bit of money. Sack settlements first, then take them the next turn. You'll get tons of loot to kickstart your economy, and hopefully followers that boost sacking income. Rebels aren't an issue, their free xp and good for keeping up WAAAGH! levels

For me the Wood Elves campaign was... interesting
I couldn't afford more than one stack for pretty much half the campaign and had to rely on my alliance with other wood elf factions.
Then suddenly it started snowballing and 10 or 20 turns later I had 6 full stacks running around with a positive income of still 3000 or so!
the mini campaign is even more extreme, I had 8 stacks and an income of 15k

The WE province are amazing when fully upgraded, but you need a lot of amber to get it rolling.

It's why the AI is so powerful, because they don't need amber so the end up with super provinces and doomstacks of elite units very quickly

Anyone experiencing a weird bug when they alt-tab and tab back in they get horrible performance? Easy to fix by resetting the game but very annoying.

I like WHFB Dwarfs because of their tragic edge. The thing that keeps them alive (their stubbornness) is also what's killing them.

The problem is that GW's writers insist on cramming the "Dwarfs are dying cause they stubborn" theme in every single place they can. Which leads to retarded shit like "Orc shaman exploded collapsing a canyon on our army killing 100000000 dwarfs now we gotta mine it to death". Also every single army book needs to show how badass the army is by having it:
1. Conquer a dwarf hold
2. Kill so many dwarfs that the dwarfs have to hide in their hold.

Why the fuck did the devs think it was a good idea to try and imitate a tabletop game exactly, despite the fact that the Total War engine could've made Warhammer a lot more legit than tabletop can?

Like why the fuck can't knights dismount? They can't in tabletop because they are literary glued to the horses, and they can't in TWW either because CA thought copying this was a good idea.

Is it even possible to do a dwarf campaign in less than 100 turns? If I do anything early Grimgor always seems to have Black Orcs and I'm forced to wait until my armory is up to fight him at least. Or I just swarm pickaxes at them and hope for the best.

Also a massive game spanning campaign as the Franks/French from Attila all the way to Napoleon.

Sat in Silver Road maxing out all the settlements. Started actually fighting once my armory was up and I had a stack with greatweapon units and cannons. The rest of it was killing the numerous armies that kept running from my high-tech stack, took forever. Also 4 separate beastman invasions while I was off fighting greenskins.

I spent like the first 60 turns building up economy and fighting the border princes because fucking stuntie alliances. Then I crushed the greenskins in the next 30 turns with nothing but vanilla quarrelers, vanilla warriors and two grudge throwers.

Question for anyone who still plays Attila.

Is there any mods that have attempted to fix the balance between sieges and pitched battles? The game gets boring really quickly since 75% of the battles are the same two town maps with no walls.

I don't have any trouble fighting greenskin armies with vanilla units until Grimgor comes marching over the horizon with 3 black orc units. It can take 2+ of my regular dwarf warriors to do anything to a single black orc unit.

Most infantry will be beaten by Greatswords alone, unless its Black Orcs.
Handgunners wreck most enemy cavalry and infantry so no issue.
Great Canons or Lumminarks slaughter giants. The RoR Lumminark, or Light Wizards have a spell that multiple units in place for 20 seconds. Use them to hold big scary things in place and slaugther them with range and artillery.

AND WHY DOES KARL NOT HAVE DEATHCLAW?! It's like you don't want a terror causing slaughtering machine
