And I set that "character lighting" slider to the minimun, so that characters don't pop out, and look like they're part of the world, instead.

And thats how I know you never read about anything on medieval warfare in your life. The longbow was so feared and the archers were hunted down and killed in wars because they could pierce armor and one small group of good archers could kill an retarded amount of people from distance provided they had distance and enough arrows to do so. Only a few man in medieval times wore real plate armor because they were stupid expensive and very hard to use and even those didn't charge on an open field against a troop of archers, because eventually he'd get fucked by an arrow. A trained longbowman can shoot 3 arrows before the first one hits the ground, its literally a rain of arrows if you have a lot of them shooting at the same time.

The problem with bows is that it takes 10 minutes to explain everything there is about the weapon to a guy but it takes 10 years for an archer to actually become good. While you give a retard a crossbow or a gun and he'll do fine with a brief explanation.
The thing is, crossbows were crap and the reason english longbows got so famous, because people couldnt best them with it. While guns had the same power as bows, were easier to use and didn't take years of training to have the proper muscles to use it.

I have mine maxed out too. No problems except I can't hit my positionals half the time because I can't see the mobs through the battle effects. I always wanted to turn that off and tweak my options for a more realistic picture. I didn't think it was possible but I'll definitely give it a try now.
