There was some dude a few threads ago who quite fervently insisted that this was the best way to level as a Paladin. Basically grabbing SoC first and going almost all holy, using a two hander most of the time. He also said you could heal dungeons with this too, which suits me better than tank or dps obviously, though I imagine having a ret dps during leveling dungeons isn't a huge deal.

no, I would not vouch for this spec. Consecration is too mana-inefficient for solo leveling. Holy Shock is too mana-inefficient always. and in the low level dungeons you don't need any healing talents to heal.

this is what I advise
1-40:
go up ret first (SoC->Pursuit->Conviction), then up prot, then holy

at 40 (or as early as 38, you just need Seal of Wisdom) respec to: http://db.vanillagaming.org/?talent#sZVhxIxzVo
get a good shield (Salbac Shield is easy and guaranteed, Aegis of the Scarlet Commander even better) and put a mithril shield spike on it. aoe grind. you can tank or heal in 5mans.

level towards this @ 60:

being able to go heal or prot means you can more easily get your BiS holy pre-raid gear from dungeon running.

this spec sucks in pvp though so you will want to respec if you're going to do the bg grind at 60. you could do something like http://db.vanillagaming.org/?talent#sVxzrxZVGbcchE and be some warrior's pocket healer (smart) or you could wait until you get an Earthshaker from MC and then respec to ret or 2h reckoning to run around swinging at ppl (less smart)

Holy Shock just always sucks though so unless you've got like a Lok'amir never go 31 holy. 20 Holy is enough to raid and then you can use the remaining 31 pts to get either tanking or pvp ability

ps if you're going to tank 5mans I highly recommend you take Engineering for grenades otherwise your only ranged pull will be Linken's Boomerang

my 60 pally was 20/31/0 and I never had a lack of things to do

20 holy + preraid BiS heal set is enough to heal anything pre-Naxx

31 prot + deathbone set + blue tanking gear is enough to run all 5mans and to OT MC and ZG. 45min baron is absurdly fast + easy when you have AD trinket and exorcism and consecration, grind for that skellyhorse

holy+prot makes you an incredibly durable battleground healer, just follow a geared warrior around and the two of you will clean up

dualspec isn't a thing. I would recommend doing as you said, level as ret and then switch to holy at around level 40 or 50 when you can get holy shock. Since you can heal any dungeon as ret up until then anyway (probably). Seal of Command in the ret tree is what makes paladins good at killing stuff. Paladin questing is literally just auto attack city

sword/mace spec - good for ret dps in pve, if you insist on going ret, but you shouldn't. useless in pvp. doesn't help with tanking threat much bc your white hits aren't much of your total threat
diplomacy - generally good and nice
perception - okay pvp talent but paladins already are v good against rogues and stoneform is good against them too
spirit bonus - pretty useless, you don't have in-combat mana-regen talents

dwarves:
frost resist - theoretically helpful in Naxx if you ever get there but it's only +10
treasure finding - kind of useless bc all paladins should be mining/engineering. but if you don't have a gathering prof it is nice
stoneform - nice tanking and pvp ability, good
gun spec - obviously useless

For pure pve then you'd go 1-40 just ret, really, as you can heal in any spec for leveling dungeons as long as you wear int gear. But with nost's pop and it being pvp, this spec is great. You want to be able to survive ganks and prevent downtime due to corpse runs.
I'd switch the hit to guardians favor, i think not having that is shit for pvp but whatever.
Like the other dude said, holy shock isn't totally necessary but i still like it.

And no, ret is fine for dps while leveling dungeons, but good luck finding anyone that won't be a fag about it (or a warrior who will want you there rolling on his shit).
Consecration is fixed but still not godawful for aoe.

Just in general, i always spec for pure pvp while leveling as every skeleton wizard in the zone will want to fuck you. The good news is that most rogues won't bother with you.
Reckoning is a good option as well if you are into it, i just don't like it as much but it's all up to preference. If you do go reckoning, there is an addon "reckcounter" that is extremely helpful.

You work on things like farming mats, getting AV exalted, farming gold for crafted gear/enchants, while doing those things you pay attention to lfg chat/calltoarms and join a group if there is one you're interested in. Didn't take me very long to get good preraid gear.

Once you're at like half or more of preraid bis you'll be able to get in ZG/Ony pugs.

The only thing you really get out of the holy tree for leveling is less spell pushback, consecrate, and DF for no mana super heals.

You miss out on increased speed, crit, sanc aura, 2h specialty, and vengeance from ret, which all increase your damage and make you level faster.

Imp devotion aura is stupid, and getting that if you go consecration is pants on head retarded and whoever gets imp devotion aura for any reason over redoubt EXCEPT when their raid leader absolutely demands it is fucking retarded. Redoubt is better, and the biggest reason when you go holy is that you can AoE farm with redoubtsit down once=5 free blocks

I will personally either be going holy until cons into ret/prot for tanking early 5mans or ret until level 34 where I will pick up 5/5 reckoning. Nothing really compares when it comes to leveling, reckoning grinding is just faster than anything else a paladin can possibly do except crit white hit -> veng+SotC judged SoC crit. Reckoning is also fantastic for wPvP and you will shit on most rogues/warriors that jump you while having the capability of one shotting other faggots that dare to gank you after the fact. You can also kill people 10 levels higher than you, for example I was able to fight 60 wars/rogues as a level 50 pally and ALMOST win every time, sometimes beating them.disclaimer, you won't be able to do this after every 60 has T2 You can one shot every faggot mage safespotting outside gadgetzan when you get to Tanaris too.

Also, you do NOT even need any points in holy to heal 5 mans until you get to like ST/BRD. In fact I healed ST while prot specced with a healing set mostly comprised of +healing greens when I was around that level.

so the spec is absolutely fine. If you prefer holy and want to use this spec, that's absolutely fine. You'll obviously be a better healer and if you're partnered with a warrior in this spec you'll wreck shit. But you're gimping yourself solo.
