Ice spells are overall the weakest atm. There are some outliers, like Vortex or Icestorm, but they either force you into melee range (!= newbie friendly) or are expensive (!= newbie friendly) to reach full potential. I guess you could try an old shool Ice Spear build but don't expect good damage. An alternative is using a lightning spell like Arc or Ball Lightning and using 3 Dragons for freezing.

I would like to start this off by saying that this is in no way a post that is meant to talk about softcore vs hardcore in terms of which is better. Everyone plays PoE in their own way, and I totally respect that.

What this post does talk about however, is a middle ground player like myself who plays softcore but with a harcore mentality. What does this mean? It means that when I approach a build I am far more concerned about my character staying alive and having very low deaths, then I am playing glass cannon. Again this is just a playstyle choice.

Medium core players will have more life on tree, and opt for safer builds, also we approach the playstyle a little slower and we are not even afraid to logout just for good mechanical practice.

I have been playing PoE for 2 years (since late beta) and in that time I have never been able to play hardcore. I have always had unreliable internet, and for whatever reason PoE has FPS spikes on my computer. Additionally I have a family (3 young children), who cannot be ignored while playing. I have tried hardcore but have had too many deaths that were related to the above factors.

I wanted to reach out to other players who approach the game like me, and be able to share thoughts about how to play the "Medium Core" playstyle effectively.

So to get the discussion going, I would like to ask you how much room you give yourselves in terms of Survivablity vs decisions to use items like Abyssus. I am currently playing a Crit Reaver in Warbands, and I am trying to make Abyssus work while mitigating as much physical damage as possible. But I always find these kinds of things challenging because, I hate having my characters life spike. Obviously I dont play hardcore, but I watch hardcore streamers to try to see how they can both prioritize defenses while having good clear speeds. Thank you all!

I kind of want to try Pathfinder with Mbuguni's Flame.
Mostly for Dying Sun, with 3 extra projectiles.
I'm just looking at it compared to Raider, you don't lose much damage, because the frenzy charges (5-7+) are kind of an investment in themselves on the tree.
It only one thing that bothers me: going Pathfinder without Vinktar's leech feels ridiculous, even if I'll still probably carry it around for the sock effect.
Either way, I want to be CI.

PoE really figured out the best way to keep the game alive with the Leagues. I'm a fan of simply speccing into Unwavering Stance myself. Being totally stun immune is slightly smoother than Valyrium. So I don't need that much resistance.
That in turn makes me able to use shaper's touch for 1100 Accuracy, and opal rings for what I think it just "strictly" better offences. At the loss of like 400ES from gloves.

Headhunter is insane for that build because there's a lot of physical scale shit and generally every mod you can get is helpful, one of the few builds that really makes full use of headhunter, but it's entirely unnecessary its just a clearspeed item (also gives a lot of str and dex which is nice)
