Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

I only have experience with Goons from two communities, EVE Online and Neverwinter Nights.

EVE they seem like a chill bunch of people who are mostly trolly, though their leadership seems fairly shit.

In NWN, they were the special snowflake club, who'd come into RP servers as their own private groups and conspire against everyone else. Instead of actually roleplaying, it always became "goons vs pubbies", which was highly disruptive for actual roleplaying servers.

Kind of. Barely. I don't end that many turns with less than 50 gold left in my treasury. Some very specific expansion strategies might sometimes be delayed by a turn which sometimes results in one province less in total expansion. More than likely that small amount of gold will be eaten up by the pile of small but mounting inefficiencies that build up over the course of a game.

It sure it a bad event to get on turn one, sure. It's worse than nothing. But I don't know that it warrants 4 g's in fug is all.

Caelum expands extremely well with Spire Horn Warriors, with alpha strike from even a modest group routing most indies instantly. Despite having troops that are actually good in pitched battles (Raven Guard) LA a bit less so since LA indies are stronger against lance charge from those low-res troops, but LA Caelum expansion isn't bad either, certainly not bad enough to require an awake.

Dormant (or even imprisoned, since you probably won't be delayed much if at all in your ability to cast Daevas/Yazatas, although you probably want dormant for site searching) seems like a fairly natural choice, although there are other reasons to make the pretender wake up earlier than getting a decent expansion (for example, Caelum raiding is second only to bats and they can get thunder strike batteries up early, but there's a brief period of weakness in your ability to fight pitched battles that an enemy might try to exploit and pretender can be used to fill that gap).

In general, it's smart to default to either a major bless or an awake expander unless you have a specific midgame plan that requires your pretender to pull off AND isn't available on an awake (eg - Soul Contracts for Abysia or thug summoning diversity for MA Ulm). This situation doesn't really come up for the Caelums.

Taking an awake Azi lets you get access to national D summons for EA Caelum, and I consider it a default unless you want your pretender to do something specific that an Azi can't. You do not have native astral site searching for the good summons, and the Azi helps you get significantly larger.

MA Caelum also can probably benefit from an awake, since you can easily afford all the scales that you want with an inexpensive monster, and MA Caelum is a midgame nation that needs to snowball to actually win before nations with better blood or SC access pull ahead. An Azi or a Shedu will work for giving Evil or Good summons, respectively.

LA Caelum already has built in access to the 'evil' summons, with F random Harab Elders, but is like EA Caelum in that it also lacks astral mages to site search for the good summons. Personally, I'm fond of taking a bit of blood on a Maneater for Bloodstone access, but I can see the use for a Shedu to break into astral after you've finished expanding and then forging crystal gear to give you easier access to big battlefield spells (and, if the game drags on for a rather long time, some national summons).

In all three cases, you can still get strong scales with an awake monster, and none of them really relies on sacreds. Backloading your power with a rainbow is almost never a good idea, especially when you can already get a bit of added diversity with an awake god.

EA Pelagia's just generally shit.

MA Pelagia's real claim to fame is its "rush anything UW" sacreds. EA Pelagia not only doesn't beat R'lyeh UW (even in vanilla), but MA Pelagia has much better stuff for fighting on land.

If you look at MA Pelagia's toolkit, all of the stuff that they rely on most is stuff that's missing in EA - useful battlemages in their mystics, triton wielding amphibious guys and sacred amphibious infantry that, while expensive, CAN actually fight, and as many acid evokers and green lion summoners as you can gear up to take onto land. EA Pelagia trades this for... H3 on their king dudes and N1 on their Pearl Mages - and even then, their price reflects both of these additions that, in most cases, don't even help.

They're great if you have the paths to summon them. The mass version is a high research level, and the single version needs a lot of B2A2 mages.

If you can mass them they are very hard to deal with, especially combined with good mage support. Lightning attacks are difficult to protect against and they're capable melee fighters as well as having strong ranged attacks.

If you don't have an N9 bless at least, you probably shouldn't bother trying to use malakhs as thugs
invulnerability works the same as regular protection if I remember right (just does nothing against magic attacks), so a random militia can quite easily just roll high against the protection roll, 15 is not a lot especially for a thug. If it had a vine shield it would do a lot better, also shadowbrands are considered overpriced and frost/fire brands do almost the same amount of work for less valuable gems.

In terms of thug gearing, I'd say in general there's no reason to use a Shadow Brand over a Frost Brand. It's ten gems more expensive, and the AoE 5 on it means the thug'll keep hitting themselves with the spash damage. Other than that, give him a Vine Shield and you're good. Maybe a fear helmet if you really feel like splashing out, as fear stacks up nicely with Awe.

The main argument was about whether or not Ironskin stacks with invulnerability. You didn't prove or disprove it because if invul stacks, the prot value would be vague (25 prot from invul +2 from itonsking) and if it doesn't, then the highest value will be used (25), so you basically have +-12 from DRN and those +2 from ironskin wouldn't even register.

To make things worse, you used an AP weapon to prove your point, which completely invalidated the test in the first place.

Step 1) Get her some armor with high prot.
Step 2) Use normal non-AP or AN weapon.

Because of unit ID fuckery, you won't necessarily get your stormcaster to be able to cast storm before your A2 mages, which is a small problem but you only miss one turn of thunderstriking. No, units get assigned an ID when they are recruited and that determines their casting order, and you can't change the casting order afterwards. You will lose basically nothing from your boar being locked away. You'll use it to cast EBDW or Mother Oak when it wakes up, if someone else hasn't already taken them.
Expand using Boar Warriors and Carnute warriors (probably the bare chested ones, not the nobles since you're running prod 0.)
Research goals should be Thaum 1 for communions, Alt 6 for buffing, Mother Oak and Iron Pigs, Evo 5 for earthquake, Conj 5 for boars. I'd say prioritise Conj to drown your enemy in boars, then depending on how you wanna do, Evo to make earthquake communions or Alt to make stronger armies. Make a fuckton of palisades. If you get lucky with a few random bloodhenge druids (you get them every now and then) you can break into blood if you really felt like it

It's patented shit like CoE 3 was too. The flavour texts are witty and the game offers some nice variation mechanics where instead of fighting over the same resources with somewhat similar units, you fight over resources that your nation specifically needs with units radically different from the enemy. Ok, so when figuring out what pretender you want with any nation, you start by looking at their stuff. What does this nation have that makes it different and how can you leverage what it has to win. This is the hardest part of Dominions, I think, and it's fun to talk about.

Anyways, TNN has the following - 70g 9 RP lab rat mages, 145g A2 assassin mages, 265g thug mages, high defense cap only sacreds, somewhat inefficient non-stealthy troops and VERY inefficient elves.

Looking more closely at their sacreds, while they have very high defense for units, they have a low attack density. While magic weapons are nice, you can't really make them killy with a bless. This means that you can use them to expand fine, but you're not then going to go quickly roll over another player with them unless you massively overbless them. This means that if you do take a bless, it's going to be for expansion and for thugging rather than doing something like Vanheim's W9N9 and expecting that to be enough to kill a man and take his capital. Meanwhile, (also unlike Vanheim) you have much less expensive mages that are not sacred and which you can use for research and battlemagic. This makes taking a more scales oriented build, with both magic and gold scales, much more appealing.

As a result, I'd go one of two ways with TNN - either an imprisoned N9 mono with an Irminsul for maxing scales and still having a thug option and accepting somewhat weaker expansion, or an awake N9 thrice horned boar with weaker scales and relying on getting bigger to help make up for the sub-par national expansion and get to a decent size that way. The reason that I'd go for N9 is that the primary purpose of the bless is thugging rather than making your sacred units better against other players. The N9 bless will still make them better at lineholding, but you're ultimately relying on your mages to do your killing themselves rather than buffing up troops like Pangaea.

Your cheap A2 mainline mages are not sacred. It's nice for thugs, but your thugs are 'light' - you don't want them fighting the sort of long, protracted fights that will let crits build up. An E4 bless is still okay, but I value it much lower than the HP pool boost.

Stacking defense actually is often pretty decent, and if you can get W4 on the cheap it's fine. That said, the reason you want W9 in general is for quickness. If you're a berserker with two attacks or a lance charge, that quickness will make you 1.5x as good at killing (or more in the lance case). When you're not already good at killing stuff, multiplying your killpower by 1.5 is much less impressive.

TNN can absolutely be played without a bless. I consider N9 a good default for them because without it you can't REALLY thug a sidhe lord. They'll just die too easily by accident. You don't need to use thugs at all with TNN, but I like having the option

That said, if you don't go for a bless, I'd definitely take an awake scales build. TNN's expansion isn't great, and it can definitely use both money and magic scales. I would not take a diversity mage.

TNN's an air nation first and foremost. That means air elementals, thunderstrikes, and fog warriors are your go-to power spikes. For thugs, you use mistform, personal regen, and situationally elemental fortitude

Arco's troops are at least cheap and decently equipped. TNN's troops are expensive and, as a result, are fairly inefficient. Fir Bolg can be okay spear/javelin-dudes, but romans for instance have way better equipment and a significantly lower gold cost.

That's totally reasonable too, and it really is more important to actually enjoy your nation rather than have a fully optimal build. Something that you might want to try then is using a Son of the Sea. He can sail and go underwater, which can be helpful in bringing a bit more mobility, and if you give him enough death magic he has a fear aura which will let him expand. Once you can gear him up, you can use him as an SC. Later, he'll also be able to cast Darkness, which is pretty neat. TNN's troops have partial darkvision but no way to cast it natively.

The hooded spirit can do the SC thing too and that mobility does look nice, but his paths don't really bring you new magic aside from deeper E access or N globals.

If by combatant you mean expander, then the boar's a great choice.

If you want your pretender to be able to cast/craft specific things that you don't have national access to, that's totally fine. You just need to know ahead of time what spells/items you want and then pick a chassis that gets you those for as low of a price as possible, preferably with some other properties you like.

I'm thinking more on terms of intercepting reinforcements (empowering with gateway for end game super fast army if I have the resources) and doing the annoying caelum thing of jumping straight through your armies and taking your ungarrisoned provinces. I find that a good tactic as long as you are not fighting death blobs

Raiding is pretty much mandatory for all nations. Elves can be REALLY good at it with thugs doing a mass cloud trapeze assault, but you can also just summon air elementals. Aside from being reusable, thugs also bring the advantage of using gems other than air, and A gems are at a premium.

You get a supply bonus from being next to friendly forts, but you still have whatever supplies are in the province. It's almost never an issue when fighting a fellow living nation, and when it comes up, the invader uses supply items.

I'd also be down to modify that global and change it to just freespawning wailing ladies. Wailing ladies are cool, but the wailing winds in every fight ever (even/especially the ones Lemuria isn't even a part of) is just absurdly obnoxious. Blasphemy is even worse, but I don't think that spell is salvageable. A blood global that kills priests globally is just too dumb.

Swarms of peltasts work pretty well for their gold cost actually, especially with MAGE SUPPORT. Myrmidons have map move 1 and the windriders are cap only. Nothing to base a strategy around.

windriders have AWFUL attack density is the thing. They can be disruptive, but unless they happen to land on the squishies just right, they're not going to be killing stuff.

Admittedly the N9 is more for golems than anything else, but given their already decent defense I think that the HP boost is enough to help windriders expand without much losses, form a half-decent wall when put in a line formation, and last a fair bit longer when they get stuck in to disrupt

Try it out in SP on the Archaea map. The map has fixed starts and weird connections all over the place, so you might want to pick based on where you start off as much as what your faction is. I grabbed Agartha just because I thought it would be fun to have armies running around in the underdark, quietly plotting the downfall of man in their dark, cthonian lairs, far from the eyes of the surface.

N9 is for when you make Golems and give them Shroud so they get your bless. Btw I recommend Dormant Monolith with N9 and enough E and S to get golems and make boosters. N9 Golems combined with your native Frost Brand and Vine shield making lets you make good thugs/minor SC's in the mid game.

Bitmasking works by using each bit of data in a variable as a separate flag. It makes sense if you understand computer memory, but it's totally pointless since these days you don't need memory saving tricks like that. Dominions 4 is poorly optimized anyway.
To "use" it just add the numbers for each flag you want to set.

here are the graphs, I'll give a brief rundown of what happened form my perspective, I had terrible scouting all game so take with a grain of salt:

early game: team vanheim reached out for an early rush on team pan (Pan, yomi, ulm) which had malakal as it's leader, everyone gladly accepts. Team Sauromatia/Hinnom/Machaka had a E9N9 Bless and hinnom/lmachaka had rainbow pretenders. Team Oceania/Vanheim/China had W9N9 as did team Pan/Ulm/yomi. Abyisa/Agartha/Formoria had N9 as did team Marverni/Helheim/Niefel. Team bertyos was N9E4.

Mid game: team pan was destroyed. Team Sauro subs outs sauro three times before settling on rejaktor as their sauro, this prompted me (abysia) to organize a gang bang with berytos (who's two normies left the game, leaving TNN as an AI and leaving EA ermor to be subbed by malakal) to jump him. Team vanheim spends 200000 turns killing marverni/niefel/helheim.

I was TC.

Early: Vanheim's player told me that someone else was organizing a gangbang on Team Malakal, so we just sorta continued expanding into them. It went okay.

Midgame: Bery's team attacked us. We turned it around and murdered their armies, and marched onto two/three capitals. Team Abysia attacked Bery too. Team Marv then attacked us, so we had to divert armies to fighting them instead of finishing off Bery. Bery with their god and hero SCs single handedly destroyed Fomoria, Abysia, and Agartha's attempts at finishing them off. Then he started summoning Se'ir

Later: Team Abysia truced out with Bery, and then we did too. Bery started massing demons and stuff. Team Sauro did the sub-dance and then attacked us too. Then team Abysia attacked us. Then we talked team Abysia into switching sides and invading Sauro. Team Bery tried to hustle Vanheim into giving them more free stuff, but agreed to invade Sauro after some frankly weird diplo. Then Sauro died quickly.

With the war v Helheim/Nieflheim/Marv now being 1v1ish, our team turned around and started destroying them, but we didn't do it as fast as Sauro did in the 1v2 against major blood powers.

Then Team Abysia invaded us. Then 2/3 of us staled (the big province dip at the end was the stale turn). Then we ended the game.

I was Berytos.

My team had several issues while expanding, one of them was playing his second MP ever and the other one had real life stuff that didn't let him actually focus on the game.

So we rushed Mother oak and then, after vulturing some provinces from Malakal's team, my team mates insisted on attacking China. "Don't worry, we will beat him easily", Ermor played said.

I had to trust, and anyway both of them were getting tired of the game and complaining one how passive and boring it was. So I had to let them fight someone.


TNN sent some elf raids that annoyed TC, while Ermor and me pathetically suicided our troops against TC's superior army.

Ermor lost all hope in the game and basically started chainstalling, while I retreated back to my cap.

TNN went AI even if I told him several times that if he sent one every 5 turns just to send me the 50 gems from Mother oak, it would be great for me.
But he went AI ignoring me.

There I was, alone. That made Abysia's team attack me, since I was weak.
But my telkhine god king destroyed tons of agarthans and nemedians until I got Queen of the City.

At that point, I had like 3 provinces left and they couldn't defeat me, so I offered them peace in exchange for me having some of my old kingdom back.
Then Malakal showed interest in subbing Ermor, and that made me want to keep on playing. I think I learnt a lot of stuff from him, so I'm glad I kept playing.

But Ermor's cap was being sieged by TC, who told me he wasn't going to attack me to let me fight Abysia's team.
I teleported both my telkhines into him and destroyed most of his army and made it rout.
That made him and his team distrust me all game long, even if I paid for some of his losses.

The main selling point of summod isn't that it's perfect (it isn't, EA bats are still the strongest, but less so, due to buffs at the bottom of the table helping Therados, R'lyeh, Abysia, Helheim, etc - nations that previously were only slightly above these that haven't gotten buffed - most becried C'tis, but also still Pelagia, Hinnom, and TNN, are now the worst nations, for EA at least).

What really sold me on summod personally was nothing sum1won did - rather, it was what shillwinter did. Shillwinter buffed LA Ragha while at the same time nerfing EA Machaka. Also, the obliteration of Therados.

Given the choice between having sum1won do the balancing, or shillwinter . . . the choice is obvious.

I'd rank Nexus, Utterdark, and Enchanted Forests as more game ending than corruption (albeit more feasible to dispel).

In certain circumstances, Purgatory (vs Lemuria), Gift of Nature's Bounty (with good rec anywhere units and mages), Gift of Health (with tarts), and Strands of Arcane Power (if your prime opposition relies on low S mages) are just as, if not more devastating.

AC can be muscled through, often times far better than Utterdark, Enchanted Forests, or Nexus can be.

Reflection:
Berry absolutely caused us to lose this game. First, by successfully resisting our 3v1 gank and suing for peace. Then, by completely outmaneuvering us in the former Sauro lands. We gave him way too much territory which he leveraged into positioning himself as a formidable force.
Anyway, had fun, well played. I’m sad I didn’t get more sweet sweet mercury action.

Well, the game is over now. It was an AI fest but I'll provide a summary regardless.

The beginning of the game was very low-econ because meme thrones being captured tanked the economy for everyone. This of course affected everyone, but I felt I had to urgently capture some more territory to pay the bills and Sauromatia seemed like the most reasonable alternative and I organized a gank with Pangaea. I did capture some provinces but combined with C3 dominion that ruins my troops and really strong showing with massive communion, they halted my advance and I settled to making a separate peace after capturing just several provinces.

I was closer than I thought but at that point it looked like Arco and Caelum were about to run away with the game. However, I had no border with Arco and attacking into C3 dominion and thunder strike batteries seemed like a suicide so I went after #3 player in Helheim. I had some success expanding with heavy thugs/light SCs and repulsing elf raiders but I still didn't really dare to enter their C3 dominion and they started deploying anti-thug tactics so my advancement was halted. They were kinda beaten but not out of the game and cast BoT and went AI after some additional setbacks.

Now, given that Arco had gone AI, there was an uncontested leader in Caelum. Instead of finishing off Helheim, I went after Caelum despite it being a seemingly suicidal move (I hoped to beat their armies on my H3 turf and only then make a proper move to capture their core territory) and had great success capturing their territory (again with Ember Lord/Cyclops/devils/elemental royalty) during the first couple of turns of the war. Then Caelum suddenly went AI as well.

I still had AIs as big as me harassing me, the game at that point seemed secure. The only threat, I thought, was wish engine from Pelagia and I made a move underwater. Pelagia didn't really try to contest their non-fort provinces but did cast Arcane Nexus. The thing is, they used it for Armageddon and I think I was actually advantaged from it since I had twice as high gem income than everyone else combined and gems used to cast Armageddon of course where way from using them to beat me rather than annoy me. After casting Armageddon several times, Pelagia went AI as well. Finally, Ulm decided to try and oppose me but didn't make a dent and I captured the remaining thrones required for victory.

Ultimately, while I think I would have had a chance if Arco and Caelum had decided to fight each other, I don't think I "should" have won this game. Thanks to ME globals I had absurd F/E income but I felt I couldn't translate it into any kind of decisive assault to C3 dominions due to elemental children being gimped to militia levels and being really difficult to deploy anyway due to low mobility and necessity of magical leadership.

I just endured while contenders went AI around me and in this sense I didn't do any better than Ur who deserves credit for sticking in the game till the end despite being down to their sieged capital for half of it (my suggestion of vassalage also seems like a diplomatic blunder in hindsight, perhaps they could have offered some assistance instead of a nuisance if I hadn't antagonized them so). Sauromatia also should have ruined my chances of victory with their great defence (the bulk of my forces at the time were destroyed so, while I gained territory from that war, I was crippled for a good while) but as it turned out, the leaders dropping out early suddenly left me in a good position despite being so severely set back.

Gem income probably is the only other interesting graph (that's Rivers of Lava in action).

Every province with a candle in it gets F1E1 site and mountains get F3 sites so it's a pretty huge deal, it's like running Eternal Pyre+Mother Oak+Maelstrom+Well of Misery+Gale Gate. Or Arcane Nexus with all other players spending gems liberally.

But it's still Abysia and fire so it's not that great. Flame Children are good in H3 but they become utterly impotent in C3, you could field tons of Cyclops/Ember Lord SCs but they are very much counterable etc.
