I think the thing that gives this general a stigma is just how long its going. I see the same kind of stuff in other generals when there is no discussion though.

If you just finished Rin route, give yourself some time to take it all in. Eventually I would recommend you play through few other routes though, just to experience the ""game"" to the fullest.

Every route is unique in some way, so you won't really find the same emotional connection in any other route.
Each girl has her own trauma, you encounter different hardhips and reach different conclusions from every route.

4LS is heavily against modifying / expanding on their game, they refused anyone who asked for their blessing so far, and that won't change in the future.

As for new studios born from from 4chan and inspired by Katawa Shoujo, there were a few. Most of them quit along the way, but one or two still remain and update us on the progress of their VNs.
