As someone who only played the first month of original nost, get me up to date here. What made it so great? Was it purely the massive population? Because it was a total shitshow from what I remember, nothing more than a stock mangos server.

Its an overhyped server that uses chinese players to inflate population, bringing in droves of players who want the "blizz-like" experience of 12k players.

BUT its nice to see unique interactions BECAUSE of the mass population, i.e. The Un'goro Mafia, and Anti-Xiao gank squads.
If you can stomach the queues, the lack of mobs, the lag, the gold sellers, Pottu, and /vg/ faggots... well theres an actually decent game there.

Well for one, they aren't. Hunters are typically the 3rd-4th most played class. However, they are shit in terms of end game raiding and dungeons. They pull poor dps and are mainly used for tranq shot and traps

They're not underplayed, theyre just underrepresented in raids because they don't bring anything but kiting utility to raids.

They can't heal or tank, and they tend to get out dps'ed by other classes.

No it was always like that on Nost. Horde basically gets shit queues and always get alliance premades, there's just a lot more Chinese rankers on Alliance (although now there's a lot of them on Horde too, but you can't get in unless you're Chinese or paying them).

That's why the honor brackets are so different, you can see it on realmplayers, Alliance will have 1.5mil honor, and Horde 500k for example.

They are extremely good in pvp. they have the longest range, can blow up clothies, and can kite melee. the AoE frost trap is so good in bg's, and in AV you can solo capture mines by kiting the gnolls, and you can kite lieutenants also.

That's the non-conspiracy reason, yep. Either shooting for max numbers on one server as a message for the "legacy movement" stuff, or as a fuck you to rival private servers.
Related to that would be the desire to appeal to as broad a segment as possible and not seem racist in any way, which is common if misguided.
The tinfoil explanation would be that old nost and now nu-nost has/is funded by gold sellers or is under thread of ddos from them, and the bans are vs rival gold selling outfits.

If they were REALLY wanting cash, they'd open a chinese only server with a cash shop. Several chinese forums are full of posts asking for something like that, and the chinese players would be all for it while the russians would make a literal fortune. Meanwhile the other servers would be virtually china free (always "some" gold selling anywhere populated, but the main customer is chinese players anyhow).


I'm not smart enough to tell you if the conspiracy is correct but it seems like a lot of effort to make secret rubles when they could do that in other ways anyhow. But it is fun to talk about because fuck pottu.
