Going through more of these threads, it looks like people didn't think DE would change the meta much either. There's pretty much 0 anticipation of Haven and there were people worried about Polyphonic Roar being too good.

Also, despite what /svg/ says about Shadow, practically no one seems to have bitched about it pre-DE when it was top tier in the 20ish threads I've gone through. For some reason it got a free pass even though Sword, Forest and Dragon players were arguing over who was more broken.

I got 3 legendaries, 1 animated legendary, 21 golds and 4 animated golds.

The legendaries in particular seem pretty bad though, should I keep re-rolling or is this a good outcome?

DE didn't introduce any notable mechanics. We got Rush keyworded, and inconsistent anti-evo cards. It'd probably be obvious a year from now to a new player that it was an early expansion with the way support was distributed, there's a huge lack of theme among any of the given crafts and the only one that significantly benefited from this was Haven, which was half-chance. That said, the meta still shifted significantly because honestly, a single decent bronze in one class is all it takes to change the whole meta, but overall DE's contribution to the meta was largely shaping and reordering existing archetypes outside of Haven getting new stuff.

Rise seems like a much more competent job. Most crafts have one new archetype getting significant support instead of the weird spread DE had, and then existing archetypes all get one or two cards that patch up issues in their design. It's pretty clear that Rise was built referencing the existing meta to remedy it, they avoided direct support for the top tier decks while providing answers against them, gave everything in tier 2 a few options, and then bumped up shit like Discard Dragon and made new shit like Tempo Rune. Even if they miss on most of their cards, everything's going to shake if only Midrange Blood or Eidolon Haven become good immediately.

I started playing two months ago, only buying the starter deal and basically dusting all my possessions to make D-Shift after doing some research.

Got to A0 after 170 wins with D-Shift, then used a mix of mainly Aggro Bats, Banner Sword, and Tempo Elves to finally get Master.

I also played a bit of Spring Garura and Midrange Shadowcraft. Did I do well for my overall run?

Fighter's seen play in lists before DE. A lot of cards are effective vanilla 2/2s through most stages of the game, you could argue that Aggro Shadow runs 3 cards that're effective vanillas on curve.

Dropping a 2pp 2/2 on 3 and 4 isn't even a bad play on a lot of common board state, admittedly it'd suck if your only play is a vanilla 2/2 on 5 and 6, but if your deck is getting fucked like that then there're probably much larger issues at hand than your 2pp line up.

Shadow's three commonly run 2PP 2/2's

Weakest one, and will probably be replaced with Sexton in a lot of lists, but still serves as an okay shadow generator

Necro 4 for Storm is rock solid in a class that has access to a 1PP 2DMG follower buff, paying 4 for Storm is just generally valuable for unsuspected trade-ins, etc.

Super-duper good ability, 1 DMG anywhere on the board (excepting the presence of warded followers), makes for rock solid late Charon or Playful Necro evo plays, generally just a good ability to have for the reasons given under Mummy

All of these cards synergize with what Shadow aims to to as a class, Date doesn't. Dragon has big dudes to run into other dudes and clear, they don't need a 7PP Execution. Date is just an underwhelming card that I will be very surprised to see in many lists.

Aggro Shadow's doing poorly but you need to understand that Haven's almost exclusively the reason it's kept down. It was top tier pre-DE when some lists were running Fighter and did well against Forest and Sword, which it's losing to right now despite very little changes in the match ups, which is part to do with the fact that most modern Aggro Shadow builds go out of their way to tech against Haven and sacrifice their other match ups.

On the topic of Ramp Dragon, that was the other deck that fell out of top tier in this meta despite arguably getting better support than Midsword did. The fact of the matter is that other decks's support can impact your viability more than your own, and Ramp Dragon was never bad due to a lack of cards, it was bad because the meta developed against it. Tia was a massive hit in the match up that traditionally favoured Dragon, Midsword was always good against it and got more popular even though very little changed in the lists, and both DShift and Seraph came into the spotlight with DE.

Returning to the topic of Date, he pads out a 2pp line up that's traditionally relied on neutrals to pad and helps answer the ward weakness of the deck. A lot of the decks Ramp Dragon is competes against received less support than Ramp Dragon for Rise, and even if they keep beating Ramp Dragon, decks that counter them will likely emerge to improve the state of the meta for it.

That's what I think about Date. He does nothing someone else can do early game and late game, he doesn't improve the game more than say, a DoD would.

Face Dragon rarely has a Forte that lives a round, so Date breaking down a ward doesn't really do anything. He's too expensive to combo with anything, except maybe a Maelstrom Dragon but at that point you're better off with Wild Hunt or something so you can play Forte from hand.

I don't see how it improves early game or late game. Dragon's 2PP and 3PP choices are shitty, but a draw from Scholar or random damage from Wildfang seem like a better bet than Date.

Sergeant is only 1 extra shadow, and while I understand that "1 extra shadow" can mean the difference between a 1 or 3 dmg clear, or a taunted/untaunted Death's Breath, I seriously believe that running Sexton will be a next gain in shadows, even outside of the Haven matchup

Any time you play Conjuror or Howl or Playful while he's on the board, those are extra shadows. Playing him before, after or with Mordecai protects your win condition if that's the kind of list you're running.

Sexton isn't mind-blowingly good, but neither is Sergeant, and I think Sexton edges out Serg for being relevant in more situations

But I could be very much wrong, and I'm willing to accept that. I'll need to play with lists subbing the Serg for Sexton and vice-versa for a while until I can make a call.

Probably not because your deck will be taken up already by 3 Floral Fencer's and 3 Banners. Floral Fencer on curve with evolve is too good, and you'll want to play banner on turn 4 if you go first most of the time anyway.

The only way I see Sexton generating more Shadows is if you run it as a late drop., especially if you get one off of Feena. Otherwise you'd just evolve Sexton and drop a Conjurer assuming Sexton lives. If it doesn't then he's just a dude. Sergeant only gives one shadow, but it's a guarantee, not a possibility.

Ultimately though I'm not attached to Ramp Dragon or convinced it's going to be good or anything, I'm mostly just trying to convey that the attitude of writing cards off because they don't fit perfectly into the existing meta is ridiculous based on the precedent of going Standard into DE. In a vacuum, Date is on curve at 7pp with an upside of being playable at 2pp, he's worth testing and I expect to see him.

Shadow has a really satisfying class dynamic in managing your shadows and choosing where to spend them.

Plus cards like Phantom Howl are absolutely insane toolboxes that can accomplish practically anything you want them to; it's a shame that PH and Cerb are most well-known for the face combo, nothing makes my dick harder than dismantling a board with those meme-as-fuck dogs or URUSENAI
