New vanilla player here.

I'm planning on rolling a gnome mage when the new server comes out, and I have a lot of questions (hopefully not too many)

What professions should I take whilst leveling? (I read a post on here at some point that said to take herbalism and alchemy, use the herbalism to level alchemy so I can transmute arcanite for "free" gold, and then drop herbalism and pick up tailoring so I can make bolts of mooncloth? Is this a good idea for a dumb newbie?)
What's going to be the cheapest/easiest mount to get my hands on?
Are there any really good quest rewards/drops that are worth getting that will last me a while?
Are there any particular tricks I should know whilst leveling that might make things go faster?

Any extra advice is welcome, I don't know what the heck I am doing.

Which are just Retail servers minus things like LFD, LFR, and heirlooms.

Gathering professions are the only ones that are going to make money. If you want to get your mount fast then take mining/skinning/herbalism/fishing and forget taking a profession the uses items up. All the mounts will cost pretty much the same, 90g/900g. Besides which, tailoring was only good for mages because of bloodvine gear and that is only added in the Zul'Gurub patch.

And in vanilla, especially vanilla without what I believe was 1.10 content, you can't level to 60 without grinding. Forget about solely chaining quests. Quests are what you get for a little extra experience in between your grinds; you just kill everything near you that isn't grey. You see those people camping on top of a quest spawn? They are retarded. They could've just killed 40 or so mobs in the time that shit takes to spawn and came out way, way ahead. And forget doing any elite quests and very rarely do dungeons; party organising takes far too long, so if you have to wait for people to get to the area you would've been better off just grinding during that time.

The only quest rewards that you would use for a long time start in, like, Uldaman. There might be a ZF item for mages, but I dunno. Look up your pre raid shit for mages.

Fresh will have a higher population most likely, this means more player interaction, but server delay will be huge. WoW was meant to handle 4k players on one server at max, the fresh server if it follows in Nost's footsteps will be close to 12k.

Besides the ping, the only immediate benefit would be that there are no level 60 gankers fucking up the quest givers, or you while you level. This is massively important for alliance characters because Redridge was forgotten about when Blizzard first made it.
Horde get barrens free to themselves to level 24ish, alliance only get protection til 14-16 as Redridge doesn't have faction protection.

Ok listen up faggots, here's your braindead guide on how to speed level at the start.

Want the easiest leveling 1-10 physically possible? Roll a tauren.

Now, for the group composition. Leveling with anything more than 2 players in a group is shit. Avoid it at all costs if you're grinding, only group with 3+ people for important quest mobs or some shit. Never group 3+ for just grinding, this is key.

Now, your partner classes are sort of kind of important. Obviously you should just play whatever the fuck you want, but if you want MAXIMUM 1-10 efficiency I will give you some protips. Your 2 man group should have a shaman or priest in it. Both get heals right off the bat allowing you to instantly run out of the starting zone and grind level 4-5 mobs with ease. Ideally you'll want to hit level 2 before leaving the starting zone though, but if you're in a 2 man group straight away that might be hard given you're splitting experience. Though if you can slither your way into the server the second it launches and snipe a few boars you can hit level 2 pretty fast. A perfect leveling group would be priest/shaman+a warrior. Warriors actually hit really fucking hard in the 1-10 range and have no down time on their resources like mana users.

The key is grinding. Kill literally fucking everything you see. This is the rule of thumb all the way from 1-60. If it's a yellow mob (green level mobs are a waste of time), kill it. Kill everything to and from wherever you're going. No matter what, end of story, no question about it. This will save you from needing to grind later down the road and or running into problems where the mobs are too difficult. It will keep you ahead of the pack for speed leveling by a mile.

Also barrens is the literal god zone. Fuck silverpine. Don't even bother with silverpine at all until you're around level 18. Also do not try and get verogs head.

Other players are going to take aggro sometimes. They have HP pools too. The healer can cast heals on them as well. This is okay. Do not fear. Mage should nova them, ice block tank, rinse and repeat. If he runs around like a chicken with his head cut off than he is a retard.

Gathering ones. Skinning is simple easy money but you won't be able to auction off the leather. Herbalism and mining will have a TON of competition involved, so you'll need to grind skill levels for it as you level up - good money to be made there though. Enchanting is a waste of money, tailoring has a few decent items for PvE and mooncloth cooldowns will give you some spare change but is overall a waste of money, engineering is for PvP, other profs are useless for you. Cooking isn't very good in vanilla, First Aid is mandatory and fishing takes forever but it'll make you rich.

Not really. There's a few good crafted items, but they're not worth buying. The only "must have" would be Whitemane's Chapeau from SM Cath if you don't have a helm already. Focus on getting Stam/Int gear and try to get some spell dmg or frost dmg, but don't sacrifice too much HP/mana for it.

Whether or not that is a problem depends on the pack of mobs. If they're AoEing a group of elites down, then tell them to stop. If they're AoEing a group with only 1-2 elites and a bunch of normal mobs, then they're doing their job and you should be doing yours by keeping the elites off of them.

You don't need a leveling partner to do any of what I wrote, it just helps for the lower levels.

Usually you can just invite a random running by you looking like he's doing the same thing the second the server launches and hope he's not a retard.

If you absolutely can not get a 2 man group going than it depends on your class what options you have. Hunters will get ass fucked by their dead zone and the "we swear this is nost core" god awful auto shot coding. Whereas a shaman can solo level 4-5 mobs at level 1/2 with complete ease.

Just about any class should be able to kill the 4/5 mobs at level 2 though, and like I said hitting level 2 isn't that difficult even in the orc starting zone with 5000 players all jammed in there. It seems like it would be impossible but it just takes a few minutes of finding a good spot to tag mobs. Then you can head out to grind the higher level mobs instead.

For some classes it would arguably be faster to do the starter levels solo, like shaman, warlock, or maybe paladin.

No, it's not. That was my entire point. It's not difficult at all to level up in the 1-10 zones, you just need to accept that grinding is the key to leveling efficiently. You can do every quest besides the 1-5 zone ones with relative ease even a day after launch when everyone is bottlenecked. You just need to resign at certain areas and move on if you're not able to grind while you're trying to accomplish something. If you're waiting for a quest mob to spawn that's fine, but if you're waiting for a quest mob to spawn and there's 200 people camping him and you aren't getting any mob tags to grind while you wait than it's not worth it.

How do you, personally, make gold?

I've been buying out herbs and making potions on my shaman, I'm up 200g or so.
