Still not sure what do do ship-wise now that the proper sale is coming up in 3 days. I have a LTI Cutlass and Razor plus 85 store credits I could shuffle around. Basically I'm still just looking for a way to get rid of those store credits and end up with something somewhat useful. I'm eyeing the Avenger, but after playing around with it for a bit on PTU I can't say I'm a fan of how it performs. Plus the cockpit and interior needs work.

Procedural Generation

I use it for DnD stuff, so I can tell you it makes work way easy. Just randomly generated assets until you settle on one you like, then do the 'minor' corrections to make it really stand out.

you should probably kill yourself.
>>
>>163546681
Most of the planets are empty anyway, so they can build them in a relatively short time with the procedurally assisted tools F42 Frankfurt keeps building. For surface outposts and stations/satellites they're developing a system of modular components that can just be lego'd together.
>>
>>163547081
yes, and
>>
>>163546868
Basically this. Procedural Generation should be a filler tool, not a content tool like what ED/NMS has done.

CIG already had full access.

It's not open source. It's free to use, but any games published with it are required to use Amazon web services only. It's a better deal than UT4 if you don't need networking and matchmaking, aka single player.

There are a lot of different software companies at play here. You can get AWS without Lumberyard pretty easy, CIG wouldn't need it for that. Lumberyard does have a pretty good realtime editor that they are more likely using. You can make changes in realtime and it's pretty neat to play with.

On that note, I love the new missile rack sizing system. XYZ with X=hardpoint size, Y=number of missiles and Z=missile size.
A single missile requires a hardpoint of the same size, upping the hardpoint size by 1 doubles the number of missiles.

Also, remember to buy all the missiles in Voyager Direct while they're free.

Given how much CIG likes to talk about how heavily modified their Cryengine is (50 percent I think they said?) this means one of two things:

1: They were lying about how much work they did
2: They are lying about porting it all over

>>163558052
Hey, CIGs words, not mine: "Be advised that you will need to restart the client after every Star Marine or Arena Commander match or you will be unable to join a new match"

Nowhere is this said in the patch notes. Also no, I've been joining match after match all day without having to restart my client once, not including the updates.

I think the game is a little bit over ambitious. You will need a fucking NASA super computer to run this thing.

There was an alpha version during which Roberts let anyone play several ships for free. I tried a bit of pvp in the PTU (some jump point with some kind of abandoned station) and the only kills I got was from bumping my ship into others. The lag was such that I could barely aim and I constantly saw targets "phasing out" due to lag.

Also, so much fucking detail! Who the hell needs mugs of coffee and fancy furniture/toilets in the damn ship?

The more I look at the new missile racks the more confused I am. There are 616 racks despite no S6 missiles existing, several S5 racks despite no ship having S5 missile hardpoints and several 6XX racks you can't use on the only ship with S6 hardpoints (Gladiator) because you can't remove the stock 625.

I've spent a total of $50 on this game.

I really want to get a Cutlass Black but I'm afraid of kinda cutting away the feeling of actually obtaining one by playing.

It's kinda like playing vanilla WoW in 2006 for the first time where you actually had to level the whole way enjoying every second of it.
After your first few 60s, it got boring ofc, but I feel like buying a more expensive ship than an Aurora/Avenger/Mustang is like starting a WoW character at lvl 20 when it's your first time playing. It kinda cuts out the first 20 lvls where you actually had to learn to survive with lesser equipment and possibilites.

For me it's important to start with some low-end stuff.

Think of the feel you get after flying around 30 hours of gametime doing missions in a crappy Aurora MR or something and then have enough money to buy that Gladius or Cutlass that you have been drooling about all the time.

If I pledge for a Constellation or Cutlass right now I feel I have to spend 100s of hours to get a ship that's a "level" over that again, like a Reclaimer, Idris etc..

StarEngine -> Lumberyard (merge)
>>
> Fork CryEngine years ago and appearently gut and customize half of it
> AWS's fork of Cryengine, which (forces?) integration with AWS services comes out
> Somehow merge codebases into one engine?

I wish they would be less bullshitty about this news. CIG couldnt even properly merge the original Star Marine branch how did they come back in line with the latest AWS customized CryEngine?

Or did have they just been pulling in the Lumberyard AWS integrations into StarEngine?

I cant tell if this is cool or really scary.

One bad note, this means if private servers ever actually exist we are pretty much forced to use AWS for hosting. It says "yeah you can host this on your own hardware" but that doesnt mean shit if Star Citizen is only designed to run with AWS services.

Thats the whole point of Amazon releasing lumberyard. Its a hook to pull people into hosting on AWS.
>>
>>163570683
I'm quite certain they mentioned that their engine is set up in a way that still allows them to slot updates to Cryengine itself into it with relative ease. I can imagine the wizards in the Frankfurt office pulling something like that off.

>>
>>163570636
Lumberyard is a branch of Cryengine 3.8, same as what Star Engine is based on.
>>
>>163570683
They couldn't integrate the original star marine because the geometry was all off with the models, it was some fuck up between cig and those contractors that made it. Point is it wasn't networking related.

When they say they have been gutting the engine in regards to networking I think they mean rewriting it for a custom system which of course they needed since nothing had been done before like this. This custom network system might have been easily adaptable to this Lumberyard thing or just been replaced entirely. Either way whatever all the basic backend stuff ia now in place for them to build off. All the networking stuff people were antsy about has bewn sorted

AWS was exactly what they were referencing in that previous video. I worked for a VoIP telephone company that did it with Asterisk. They would stream live clients from one server to another as load changed and it would hand off from data center to data center. The idea was they would only pay for the heavy load they actually used, light volume would scale back tremendously and be cheap.

Only problem was, our peak time was everyone else's as well and sometimes it didn't shift over immediately, and everything would stop when an instance got hung between servers. Probably not Amazons fault, and when it worked it was transparent, but you were at the mercy of whenever Amazon decided it would work again.

There was no major engine change just a minor update.

The only thing that changed was Crytek is no longer a thing and Amazon owns all of their IP.

CIG forked CryEngine like 3-4 years ago.

AWS forked (took over) the latest version of CryEngine like a year ago for Lumberyard.

CIG says they are now using Lumberyard and somehow both engines are merged or something.

You know what the best balance point to tweak on fixed guns vs gimbaled guns is? Projectile speed. Not size, not power, projectile speed. Projectile speed directly addresses the weak point of fixed guns while making the two types feel different, play different and incentivize varied playstyles while still slightly favoring the gimbal in overall usefulness level for bigger ships.

It also has potential to be tweaked in a good enough way that the targeting lead ahead of the enemy ship can be pointed to and fired at with gimbals while still being able to hit with fixeds, which poorfag mouse users would want I guess.

obviously thats mostly my weapon choices, but theyve made it clear that size 1 guns are fast, accurate DPS, and size 3's are strong, mostly innacurate guns for larger-than-freelancer-size ships. it's extremely hard to maintain accurate DPS on small fighter targets with most size 3's than it is to do so with almost any size 1 energy weapon.

I understand what you mean, SC do have a bit of "level up" at least from the utterly cheap ship.
But SC is mostly about horizontal progression and all around "have fun doing a specific job". Got to remember than a Reclaimer/capital ship can't go through as many jump point.

I whish to find a Medieval-fantastic game entirely focused on roles as well, no level up, not even for mages.

If we're talking wrecks though, the reclaimer is the dedicated salvage ship.

They would have had to fundamentally rebuild any engine, you know? Just to get the 64 bit double precision, physics grids and whatever else they added in. I'm quite certain no current game engine is "built for flight simulation" Back then building their own engine was not an option due to the lack of personnel and money.
And yeah, as that one Kotaku article revealed that they did struggle with various engine and outsourcing related matters in around 2013, but in the end it worked out due to Crytek losing employees. Would it have gone better if they picked a different engine? Who knows. Back then UE4 wasn't really an option as it wasn't even out yet when Roberts built the first demo as far as I know.

Lumberyard is pretty much the same except Amazon haven't done that much to it, they've just adapted it to their server infrastructure.

Their legal requirement to disclose that they imported assets into LY's editor, or the have fully integrated AWS, or are using LY's compiler. This does not reflect the amount of code they own outright vs what they are getting from LY, only that LY is present.

I know they are using LY's editor and compiler, because if they were still using crytek tools, it would still be on the launch screen

Amazon doesn't give a fuck about a single video game. SC wouldn't even make a line item on an investor call, it would fall under some other broader category. Amazon is giving away LY and the license to publish games for free to anyone, just so you will use their web services.

I changed my throttle to double tap W and S. Then I set forward and back strafe to W and S. Then in combat, I go 50-60% throttle and control my speed with strafe.

Against NPC, I roughly match their speed with throttle and then use strafe and AB to stay close behind. The AI doesn't know what to do at this point, so it flies in a slow circle in front of you until you kill it.

This doesn't work as well against real players, because the gun sight isn't fooled by your change-up speed, and you can't just casually stroll up behind someone and shoot them, usually. What it does do is allows you to turn a much tighter and faster circle, provided you are <1000m away and not just target practice for someone else.

Against a player, at least at first, turn much slower into them than you are capable of, waiting for them to pull lead on you. As soon as they open up on you, tighten your corner to full to force them to overshoot you, reverse your corner, and you are behind them.

honestly the thousand dollar price tag for a digital space ship is enough to make a lot of people scoff at this game as a cash grab.

The affinity bug is still real. Clear the affinity for the core at 100% and you will see a massive improvement.
>>
>>163612723

With import taxes that thing will reach like 50 - 60 euros or something.

I heard something about rentals. Like the same way in the days of old you could play eve for free with a plex (now its more or less f2p) you can make some credits ingame (dont even know the name of their currency) and then just rent ships and play for free. I sure hope that sticks.

Faggots better launch a fully dedicated small size salvage vessel with long range ship scanning capabilities so you can eat the wrecks of older established players, otherwise my plan goes to the trash.

>What is a jolly roger
>>
>>163613649

My expectation was that they would allow you to have some sort of trial in the PTU and then trial players could somehow, either against the clock or through other means, put a ship in space and play for free (with some cons ofc). Like some sort of WoW token or eve plex. In star citizen could be something like limiting the player to rentals only or force them to pay some creds from time to time (this kind of mechanic is usually highly stressful for the player but it works).

Honestly something tells me it wont happen, but if theres even a slight breach/opportunity in the mechanics Im going for it.

I currently have 220 store credits sitting around. I'll probably rebuy my Gladiator for 150 once the new token comes around, but what should I do with the rest? Take your mustang and enter public races. You won't win, it doesn't matter. You are farming rec and practicing flying and using boost. Rent an Aurora LN and see if you like it in AC, PS, or VS. If it flies and fights ok, its a $5 upgrade.

An Aurora LN rental is 3500 rec, which is pretty cheap.

Coming back after a year or so and I don't understand anything.

I have a Cutlass Black with all default weapons. I literally can't kill a single thing in the PU. It's not that I can't hit anything, but I chased an Aurora around for about 10 minutes unloading dozens of shots into it and it didn't die. Are the starter guns just too fucking weak? Do I have to buy new ones from Voyager direct? Why is the UEC on the website different from the UEC I have in-game? I literally can't earn any in-game money because every missions dumps pirates on me that I can't kill with my little pea shooter. Is there no way to buy guns with in-game UEC? Is the only option I have to spend real money to buy guns on VD to earn money in-game to do nothing with? What the fuck is REC? WHY ARE THERE THREE SEPARATE CURRENCIES WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON

UEC=real money based currency intended for final game. DO NOT SPEND UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

aUEC=Alpha currency that you can buy armor, flight suits, clothes and personal weapons. Gets wiped periodically. Will be able to buy ships and ship gear somtime 3.0+

REC=rental currency for playing Arena Commander, Star Marine (right?), Vanduul Swarm, Pirate Swarm that you can use to rent any weapon and almost any ship to try out for a week. Enter public races to farm rec.
>>
>>163624469
Your turret guns don't fire because its a manned turret by default.

Your wing guns are suckerpunches - they're distortion cannons that don't deal any damage at all.

Not sure whats mounted on the nose, but thats all you were hitting it with.

Can buy guns/ships/equipment with REC that you earn in-game, or UEC which is bought currency.
>>
>>163624796
>Launches chaffs

The fuck is up with your control scheme? The default should be mouse 3 for missiles, x to change flare/chaff and Z to launch flare/chaff.
>>
>>163624382
Not arguing against it, that's just how CIG is handling that. What they are really saying is you can't get the value back until the final price hike where you can buy permanent ships with UEC earned in game. They are basically fucked until then.
>>
>>163624998
Why have I got wing guns that do nothing? And how am I meant to get money for a better nose gun when I can't kill anything to complete missions? Are there missions where nothing attacks you?

>>163625129
I'm literally clicking mouse3 to lock a missile and its spewing out flares and chaff. I haven't pressed Z at all. And for some reason G switches between countermeasures, not Z.

And I have no idea I haven't touched the keybinds at all.
>>
>>163624959
>im wishing the wing mounts were heavier than they are,
It's kind of strange, really. The Gladius also has 4 S3 wing hardpoints. imo they should either bump the Gladiator to 2S3 and 2S4 or reduce the Gladius to 2S3 and 2S2 or whatever else works. But having the same hardpoints on both seems weird.

They're meant to disable shields / equipment prior to boarding and shennanigans, rather than destroying targets.

You could get REC through racing (doesn't matter when you finish), or switch your turret guns to your wings.
>>
>>163625243
>Why have I got wing guns that do nothing?
Distortion cannons are for disabling ships - fuck knows if they work.
>And how am I meant to get money for a better nose gun when I can't kill anything to complete missions?
You'r e only earning aUEC (alpha UEC) in the PU, you cannot buy guns with this. You need to earn REC (rental equipment credits) to rent from the Electronic Access store - you can only earn REC in Arena Commander and Star Marine.

>Distortion cannons are for disabling ships - fuck knows if they work.
Distortion damage itself works. The Warlock EMP deals 100k of it. Dunno how long you'd have to shoot with the Suckerpunches to get a similar effect. Plus the amount of "distortion" in the power system gets reduced over time, so the dps of them is probably not high enough.

>>
>>163626939
Oh, right. You have to complete public coop pirate swarm. I suggest doing it on Dying Star because on that map half of each wave just suicides into the level border. You'll run into severe issues on Broken Moon once the Cutlasses and Vanguard start appearing unless every member of your team is competent, which will not be the case when playing with randoms.
>>
>>163627087

>>
>>163627356
>I don't think surviving will be an issue
Oh, you have no idea. The later waves exclusively consist of Cutlasses and Vanguards with a few Gladiators thrown in. All with working turrets that actually hit. The wave 15 boss is a Constellation and wave 18 spawns 2 of them.

>the new pickup system makes thins easier,
It doesn't because you can't restock countermeasures and at some point they start shitting missiles all over you.

if that's the case, fine, it just seems to really limit the application of grenades to chokepoints where the enemy isn't going anywhere soon. maybe that's they're intent to limit nade spam? I can accept that.

>>163629674
it's not super intuitive when you're in a depressurized area, seems like it should be only in places that are zero-G, but it's not. it isn't a bug, just awkward design. they should tighten it up so only when you're in EVA is the audio so muted and it will feel a lot more natural.

>>163628949
Yes. It's difficult to judge right now. It would also be nice if grenades were glowing. Killzone 2 did a decent job of this (despite the game being shit), grenades would glow and leave a visible trail, but there wouldn't be an indicator that I can remember. CIG should basically copy that.
