The campaign is weak too, but there's faction variety, which sort of makes up for it

Personally, I'm a sucker for Warhammer so I'd recommend it, but Attila is dirt cheap right now (less than a third of Warhammer's cost for the game + all DLC) so consider it too

Should be using my last two slots in my Empire army for Hellblasters or Handgunners if cost is not an issue?

It's okay, definitely not the best game. It fixed a lot of problems from Rome 2 like adding back a sensible family tree to tie the civil war mechanic into instead of the mess that was Rome 2's civil war system, AI was improved over the clusterfuck that was Rome 2, sieges were improved with no more instant siege assaults unless you built siege equipment, improved siege battles with dynamic fire you could use to spread to archer towers. Ultimately the campaign map still had retarded restrictions like the army limits, straits could not be blocked with ships because armies could pass straight through it anyways, bad design with some formations like defensive testudo being charged could cause it to reform the opposite direction. Also the tier unit system was a mess and poorly thought out and researching christianity made you magically unable to build aqueducts. I would still call it a better game than Warhammer.

Most of the shitposting came from fanboys calling it "the best vanilla TW ever" despite it having a ton of problems at launch (even if it was much, much better than Rome 2 at launch). Arguably Shogun 2 is the most polished and best first TW game. The setting and units are all pretty simple without feeling too casual. You want spear units? Build a spear dojo. You want archers? Build a bow dojo. The lack of variety between factions does make it a bit more boring but it's all very well balanced since it's tough for even CA to fuck up when all you have to do is balance swords/spear/halberd/bow with peasant/knight/horse instead of other TWs which are far more varied and more unbalanced with sword/spear/halberd/axe/falx/pikes/bow/javelin/slingshot.

Worst things to look out for are worthless ambushes and some buggy naval battles and retard AI siege battles

Ah yes, I remember my first assfucking from Chaos. I played Volkmar and then got accosted by Archaon and Birdman while spreading into the Ostermark provinces.

Play Wood Elves/Argwylon and don't even bother going over the mountains. Annihilate the Brettonnians, make friends with Irongrund and the dudes to the south, leave the Empire alone. You'll reach grand campaign victory about 5-10 turns before the three big Chaos doomstacks reach Altdorf.

Which brings me to another question: what faction are you playing?
