Squadleader is the game in the picture, a tactical WW2 game that ranges in scale from small scale squad sized skirmishes up to about company/battalion sized battles depending on the scenario being played. It is a hex based wargame and you need to know the rules to play. The rules required expand as the scenarios get more complex, small sized skirmishes between sqauds with MG's for support require you to know less than large scaled battles with everything from tanks, sewer movement, artillery etc .etc., i.e. you learn as you go along rather than having to learn all the rules at once (most are fairly intuitive anyway)

VASSAL is the client used to play this against other people over the interwebs.

The picture is a ~company sized battle for the large building in the middle. It is is being played in Squadleader as opposed to Advanced Squad Leader (basically the sequel most people who play have moved on to).

As for AAR's it would be a very "dry" showcase of the moves being made with a short explanation of what happened (and maybe why), so no roleplaying or inserting myself into one of the units.

The counters with 3 numbers are squads. First number is firepower, second number is range, third number is morale. So 4-6-7 has 4 firepower, 6 range and 7 morale.

The counters showing a single man with 2 numbers are the various leaders, the first number is their morale, the second number is their modifier for rolls, they have no inherent firepower of their own.

More firepower = higher chance of effective fire.
Effective fire = casualties
Casualties = unit breaks/unit becomes combat ineffective and is removed
Morale = resistance to fire and breaking

So a unit with low morale has a higher chance of breaking under fire, broken units are scrambling for their life and can not partake in combat until they are rallied.

The leader modifier number effects die rolls for fire and morale. a 10-3 leader effectively raises the morale of his unit by 3 (so regular 4-6-7 infantry would become 4-6-10 in the presence of this leader).

Should a unit break under fire, a leader is required to kick them back into the battle.

For a more visual example take Band of Brothers, under Sobel easy company would have done squat, under Winters they were extremely effective.

Here a picture of the main firelanes of all visible MMG and HMG's. Not that while the Russians have more raw manpower, when it comes to creating nigh impassable lanes of machinegun fire, none surpass the Germans.

Also worth noting is that the Germans have more, and better trained/more epxerienced leaders.

The Germans have 11 leaders, nearly all with modifiers. The Russians only have 7 leaders (to far more units) most with worse modifiers.

It is in a way a nice depiction of the quantity vs quality that was present throughout a lot of the eastern front.

I am playing the russians in this game playing against a friend of mine playing the germans.

My first objective is to take the building on the far left with the 8-3-8 assault squads. For this purpose I use my MMG to knockout the LMG that is overlooking the narrow street between the two buildings.

For the purpose of giving some clarity I will explain this one in detail, but for the sake of time I won't be doing this for every single attack Attacks take seconds to resolve, but writing out in detail what rolls were made for each and every one would take ages. That being said I will try to explain (some of) the various rules as the game progresses.

So in this case I have an MMG a 447 sqaud and a 9-1 leader. The squad mans the MMG, this gives them a combined firepower of 8 (MMG = 4-10 indicating 4 firepower with 10 range). The fire is directed at the German position in the building across of them 2 hexes away (so well within range). I roll two dice, the result is 5. My leader has a -1 modifier, so I get to subtract that from my roll (basically the leader is directing/coordinating the fire to be more effective). This gives me a result of 4. However the Germans are in a stone building, this gives them a +3 defensive bonus. The net result is a 7.

My 8 firepower had a total result of 7, cross referenced on a firetable chart (I might post that in a bit) it shows that my fire resulted in a morale check for the Germans (basically the fire was effective enough to have potentially have an adverse effect on the Germans, they now have to determine if they break under fire or manage to pull through).

The morale check they have to do is a +1. The morale of the squad in question is 7 (4-6-7). My opponent rolls two dice, he rolls a 7, add to that the +1 modifier and you get 8. The 8 is more than the 7 morale the unit has, so it breaks under fire. This unit can no longer partake in battle until it ha been rallied by a leader.

Here is the chart I was talking about.

IFT = infantry fire table
FP = firepower and are the black numbers at the top and to the left are the dice roll results AFTER modifiers have been applied to determine the result.
KIA = killed in action
MC = Morale check (the numbers between MC and KIA indicate that is is a morale check that has to be modified by the amount shown)

At the bottom some of the modifiers are shown.

So in my case I had 8FP, rolled a post modifier 7, which when cross referenced shows "1", so a morale check with a +1 modifier, or MC+1 for short.

I should note that this may sound complicated/convoluted, but in an actual game it is 2 seconds work, I indicate my attack, I roll two dice, we check the result of the fire (we know the chart by heart) then he rolls two dice, done. But like I said, for the sake of clarity I guess explaining it can't hurt.

The left flank of the left building is covered by only 1 squad, I try to break it with the combined fire of all 9 units sitting across them. The firegroup is multihexed so the leader can not direct its fire. This proves to be a mistake as my fire end up giving him an unmodified morale check which he passes. The squad I was planning to loop around for the flank will find more resitance than I had hoped for.

On the other side of this part of the map I try to knock out the MMG position over looking the rightmost Nort-South street. I manage to break one of the units, the other holds. The firepower has been reduced, but the MMG is still being manned, the assault from the top right corner in this picture will have to be postponed, trying to walk through MG fire out in the open is a good way to get yourself killed.

Forfeiting a lot of movement options later on in my turn, I decide to take some of my centre units and have them direct fire at the German MG nests.

The main MMG is now unammned. The leader with the HMG to the south has shown sever cowardice breaking before his men, his men prove to be stronger than him and man their positions.

The attempt to take out the secondary (lighter) MG in the triangular building has no effect, a result of a lackluster amount of firepower and no leadership.

Overall however the central German occupied building on this side of the map now has a severely weakened right flank.

I'm doing an Axis France run for my first game too and its going pretty well. Take command of your divisions yourself though, the whole drawing arrows meme doesn't seem to work unless there's a massively undefended front that the AI couldn't possible fuck up or you're using the plans to defend somewhere.

Pic related, I set up a front along the coast and the AI has been pretty good at reacting to the monthly British landings and throwing them into the sea while I operate in Africa.

For anyone reading, excuse the slow pace, we are playing it in the background while doing other work.

I did my movements as planned, a loop around on the left, and a crossing of the street in the centre. I decided to sit tight on the right and not reveal my positions (units with the question marks have any fire directed at them halved as "areafire", i.e. their exact locations are unknown and they have "hunkered down").

Furthermore I have taken 3 squads from the tractorworks side of the map and brought them over to the left side. The idea here is to break the Germans on the left portion of the map sooner and harder so I can then use my freed up units to relief the tractorworks. The alternative would be to have a weaker attack on the left in favour of a better defense of the tractorworks.

I am opting against the latter.

My opponent gets to fire back at me. He start of by trying to put a dent in the tractor works, or at least to get my units to show themselves. Luckily the area fire halving his firepower cause none of his fire to have any effect.

On the left however his fire has been devestating. My assault on the left is stopped pretty much dead in its tracks when that single german squad guarding the left flank manages to get a good shot of as my units are bounding down the street, two of them break and only one makes it to its destination.

My assault in the middle is thwarted even more disastrously. The LMG to the south opens up and breaks one of the units as he is crossing. The second makes it across safely, but is now in an open street with an entire German squad pointing their rifles at them from point blank range. The Russian squad in question is KIA and removed, the first casualty on my side.

Then to add insult to injury he uses his 9-2 leader to direct some long range MG fire on my MMG position. Both the Russian leader as the squad manning the MG break under the hail bullets.

If my leaders can not come back to their senses and kick the infantry back into the fight the left portion of the map is going to be harder to take than expected.

The only difficulty in that game is reorganizing the clusterfuck that is your starting armies, which are placed all wrong and named all wrong, and there are a fuckton of them for the major nations, so you have to spend hours replacing and renaming them. After that you can tell your HQ to go attack a major city (moscow) and it will get it done (assuming you 3454n't a memelord who built only stukas or so)

Historically, Satsuma was one of the leading clans that helped the Emperor Unify Japan during the Boshin War.
