am I the only one playing on a steam controller? I think I have my control scheme perfectly mapped but I'll play it for a couple of hours to see if I can do any fine tuning. I'll upload the mapping profile if anyone is interested in trying it out. I'm using the addon OPie in junction with the controller. OPie allows you to bind keys which open a radial menu for selecting abilities or spells. It takes some getting used to but I really think this setup has potential.

Ignore stats entirely and pick whatever you enjoy the idea of most. Every pet is viable. Last time I leveled to 60 on a Hunter I used a green spider from Teldrassil for the entire time and had a blast.

The novelty of picking a pet you personally enjoy the idea of far outweighs the small difference in dps, and BM Hunters are imba at leveling either way.

Objectively wrong to say all pets are the same. There are tiers for solo PvE/PvP, and group PvE/PvP. Boars are the easiest to level with as an all arounder, while cats are the best to level with on a pvp server (if you can't get broken tooth, get a SoS jag at 1.3 AS). To say leveling with a spider (only has bite) is the same as a carrion bird with -ap or cat with stealth for big openers or a boar with a 1s root are the same is why people hate hunters like you.

Shot timers like Sorrens, or others that have been posted. CCwatch (if I remember correctly) to keep track of your trap timers, or if you spec otherwise root timers. coolDown to keep track of well, your CD's more clearly. I think there's a trinket swap addon somewhere, but macros work just as fine, and aren't super needed till you get ES from AQ vendors. Hunts don't really need specific addons to work properly. Actually, people love seeing hunters who unironically use different pets. I made a lot of friends who liked inviting me along to instances simply because they knew me as the hunter with a pet spider (maybe also because I don't suck at the game). The only exception to that is in raids, where Hunters absolutely need to be perfect in order to do decent dps. Then you want a wolf with furious howl rank 4 (ideally broken tooth, but worgs are fine too).

I wanna go Horde and hope to raid (lol), and am torn between the super common classes (Rogue, Mage) and something I'm interested in due to the lore (Shaman).

How is shaman? Are they decent healers? Do I have to carry two sets of gear while leveling so that I can heal dungeons?

They did, and druid gets 4 specs (mdps, rdps, heal, tank). There are still x better than y in roles, but all are rather rounded. The only aspect not to pick a hybrid is mostly playstyle from what I can see. Also in terms of "can they do it now" enhc sham was the best dps in swp for BC, and did moderate through the xpac. Though yeah, now everything is an acceptable spec to play (mixmaxers will still need to do cookie cutter stuff though).

Shaman is literally the best PvE healer in Vanilla. If you roll Shaman you will get a raid spot. And if you don't get a raid spot, then you can PvP with instant-criticals and kick the shit out of every class except warlocks, rogues, and priests.

I'd say wait for fresh if you want to raid, as old already has cliques (unless you want to be carried in). Sham will always have to be heals endgame, and you should be fine as enhc to heal up to around maybe mid 40s, then some healing gear would be needed. Wouldn't hurt to take any healing gear no one wants while leveling though. As for rogue mage choices, I'd say pick mage if you want less of a headache both leveling and endgame.

Rogue just seems like a lot of fun, and Mage has the aoe farming and blinks and teleports and shit, while Shaman has awesome class fantasy and I like being a valued teammate. I'm torn.

Well to pop one bubble, you won't be AoE leveling as a mage on this server. Going ST imp crits/root is far faster to level with questing. Also the lag will ruin any AoE farming at cap, and I think they may disable death logout ports for farming DME plants. The only viable AoE farming you do at 60 that is rather "safe?" is specing imp damp magic, and aoe farming the dust eles in NW silithus. They do magic attacks and hit for 0 with the imp spec. Dropping ess of airs that sell well for fresh servers is a great farm.
