Xyz is not the end-all be-all, and though Pendulum enables it exceedingly (heh) well, they're also very receptive to the other summoning methods by virtue of going back into your Extra Deck rather than the Graveyard.

Magicians in particular have easy access to all summoning methods very good cards available to them like Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon, Omega, Ignister, and a few others, and you're honestly better off playing some other deck like a Zodiac variant if all you plan to do is spam Rank 4.

Pendulumgraph of Ages and its ability to grab any Magician from your deck during either turn, even without working with Xyz, is still vital. It turns all of your Magicians and even scales into floaters, and even if you can't get off its effect turn 1 somehow, it still forces your opponent to get rid of it before you start plussing like mad if they try and get rid of your Pendulums.

At worst, it's a one-for-one trading a Magician for one of your opponent's cards that happens to be searchable, unlike Solemn or Barrier.
Optimally, you're using an Orica Magician for it, and thus will also get its floating effects, as well as Pendulumgraph of Ages.
With Startime on the field, you can choose to not lose the card you were going to destroy for it, and get non-targeting non-destruction removal as well as destroying a card on your opponent's field.

If disrupting your opponent's plays does not help constitute a hard-to-break board, I don't know what is.

It's also chainable, unless your opponent has no cards to destroy. If you choose to use that as a defense, remember that Solemn gets butchered by Twin Twisters as well.

I was looking at some of the older cards due to al this DM super talk, and a lot of them have really odd atk and def values compared to there levels. Was there a point in time where people could summon these guys without tributes? Like in the first yugioh anime and manga? And would you like to see the return of good old fashioned normal monsters? Lately we only get normal mons if its one with level 4 and 200atk, or they make it into a tuner or a pendulum monster. Personally I'd like to see more of them, since they are the only cards that have a bit of lore written on them. They should release more and make them part of archetypes, or make archetypes for some of the older ones.

Past bosses like the Orichalcos monsters, God Cards, Sacred Beasts, Arcana Force, Earthbound Immortals, Meklords were all shit. Prevent all monster effects from being activated during the entire battle phase.

Please tell me all of the R4nks that can do those better. Moreover, tell me the R4nks that can do it better entirely on their own, when they could be supported by these kinds of monsters.
