The iM@S franchise has always been around allowing flexibility and putting your idols in whichever units you want. Having preset units will result in a ton of backlash, (What happens if your favorite idol and least favorite idol get paired together? What happens if two idols with great chemistry in song don't get paired together? Etc.) Remember the last time there was a preset unit? Remember how Ryuuguu Komachi was received so well?
Even then, preset units don't fix the fact that there will still need to be a fuckton of work put into voice acting costs, tons of dialogues, tons of song recording, and tons of models to do.

It's not like idols can't interact with idols outside of their unit. Let's say that (inevitably) Roco and Subaru were in different units. There could still be commus with them interacting. Just split between the routes for the two different units they're in.

There's not even any reasons why the preset units for commus have to be used for songs. You could have custom units for songs (and even specific units for certain songs) while still having preset units for commus. That way they only have to write a limited number of routes, while still allowing the player to have as much flexibility as they like for songs and performances. Doing commus would let you level up all the idols in that unit at once. You could then pick whichever idols you like for songs. Do commus with preset units to boost your idols, and then take them into custom units for songs.

Look at iDOLM@STER 2 for example. You could form whatever damn unit you liked, and all that mattered story-wise was who the leader was. Essentially, the story was disconnected from the actual songs.

Approximately fuck-all commus in iDOLM@STER have songs associated with them. From the very start, the commu phase and audition phases in iDOLM@STER have been disconnected from each other. Commus just exist to get your rank and memories up.

Ok, let's make things clearer. Let's split it into "groups" and "units". Groups are preset. Units aren't.

Let's say you wanna do a level 9 concert. Well, you could make a unit out of three level three idols to gain access. You level up idols by doing group commus that contain that idol. All idols in that group level up at once. Doing concerts unlocks more commus that let you level up and unlock more concerts.

It's not that bad. Each group's route could be roughly as long as a typical iDOLM@STER route. Same amount of dialogue, just split between multiple characters in each group rather than a single character.

As for songs, they wouldn't need to record all songs for all characters. A select number of songs could be free-for-all, with remaining songs locked to specific characters. That's how it already works now, after all. If you disconnect groups (commus) from units (songs), then it becomes even less of a problem.

Anyway, my problem isn't with the whole units thing, it's more about how a game with 50+ idols is just not going to work at all. That's an absolute shitton of work for the writers (even assuming your unit idea goes through) and the modelers, and a fuckton of voice actors to work with. The whole game would be an absolute clusterfuck, and nearly every idol would only be able to have a few songs, because every idol would need to be equal.
You're thinking with your heart, not your brain. A proper iM@S game with that many idols, that many models, that many voiced commus, and that many song covers is nearly impossible, especially for the incredibly fucking lazy company known as Scamco.
