Main Lord is the squire for a deserter knight whom leads a band of bandits preying on supply trains and civilians in a country undergoing a civil/proxy war. They ransack a group of nobles and obtain the Fire Emblem which doesn't function as a weapon, but rather strengthens the group associated with the holder and demoralizes the enemy. It functions a little like Merlinus in that you choose whether or not you want to activate it at the beginning of a map -- activating it makes normal enemies easier to handle, but it also attracts dragons to the map.

Story branches into 3 different paths (Country A, Country B, or neutral) with each path differing slightly based on morality decisions, with the conflict between the main lord and his liege driving the ending. You can agree with the deserter knight and do more banditry/a shitty group of for-hire mercenaries or more along the lines of Ike's group from FE9, even going as far as to usurp power from the captain if you fail to convince him to change. Think like an SMT game where you have Chaos, Neutral, and Law endings, although the ending only changes drastically based on which country you align with. Big bad, as is tradition, works behind the shadows to generate strife to feed the Fire Emblem in order to draw the dragons out from their dormancy because they're dragon worshipers.
