Who? Pretty much everyone has fire-and-forget abilities that will remain even after the operator has died.
The ones who don't are Smoke, Pulse, Doc, Caviera and Echo.
Of these, none are ***essential***. You can easily win rounds even without Smoke stalling with BEAUTIES or Doc turning people into Max Payne.

Bandit and Mute are essential if there is a thatcher and thermite on the enemy team, a good player will save a jammer/battery to use to counter thermite should thatcher use his EMPs.
Although not essential in terms of picking, if you have a Smoke or Doc on your team and they die straight away that's a major loss.
Also being a man down from the get-go is a pretty big disadvantage, assuming the teams are balanced.

Pretty much.
Just playing for fun with a clean slate of mind goes a long way. I do all kinds of cheeky shit in casual that I'd never try risking in ranked to not have my team end up in an unfavorable match up because I went and got myself killed.
Best way to learn new things and strats is to just try random shit in casual by not caring about winning as much as just trying to make the best of your current situation.

Never seen this before, but it doesn't sound like a worthwhile thing either way.
A more severe gadget bug is the one where your guns glitch into your gadget and you're unable to use either of them until you die.

How many operators do you guys feel you have to be proficient with in order to not be deadweight?

It feels like a lot of the operators need solid map knowledge in order to not be fucking useless, and I guess I just don't have enough time/i'm too fucking retarded to learn all the maps inside and out so I end up avoiding using a lot of the operators.

I play a lot of Sledge and Thatcher on attack (I just smack holes in things and/or follow people around to EMP things) and Doc and Rook on defense (drop armor, revive/heal people)

I play on console and I've been doing pretty well with who I've unlocked. I'm a silver IV-gold I level 38 and I win pretty consistently. My number one issue is learning the maps, there's so many of them.

Anyone have any tips for a new player? Who should I focus on, or unlock next? My best plays have been as Ash, Jäger and Pulse. I love roaming.

Blackbeard over Valkyrie was a mistake. Intelligence makes up for at least 30% of this game and Blackbeard doesn't have anything in that department.

You can win without Thermite and Thatcher.

Peeker's advantage is real. Slice the pie, prefire and don't stop moving.

Flash hider and muzzle brake are your best friends. Laser sights on pistols and shotguns situationally only.

Play terrorist hunt and ranked. Don't bother with casual.

Shoot the fucking cameras. Don't let your first drone die, hide it.

If you have to solo queue, don't try advanced tactics. Your teammates without microphones probably won't know what you're doing.

Peakers advantage has become meta instead of being something that needs a fix, 500 ping mudmen can kill you before they are even on your screen, casual is just plat/diamond premades now, I haven't been in a match that wasn't an absolute stomp since red crow started. And ever match I'm in now has someone who knows where everyone is at all times. Oh, and what the fuck is with the 1911 and Pulse? Why is every Pulse 1 shotting me with it now?
