Looking at the DR_magic_engine_decisions.txt file, only chaos, nehekhan, ice and greenskin lores are useful can be casted in battle. I remember hgh magic, dark magic, necromancy and the generic lores being pretty useful on the battlefield in the mini wargame...

I've played WITE both as axis and soviets (never completed the full 41-45 with either though) and have been thinking about also getting it.

What's the most effective technologies, other than army professionalism, that would give my troops an edge in fighting the US as Spain? Strat mobility and the organization tech while defending the woods in the south? Appalachian mountains are too hard to hold since they are so deep can't reinforce enough armies and hold enough land to keep them from leaving out.

I am thinking about shooting for Alabama and Louisiana woods with slivers of Georgia. Would give my units more space and they would be able to reinforce each other. Appalachian mountains leaves my reserve units exposed in grassland like Blackstone.

Artillery would contribute, 1.5 more defense with their first tech, but would also gain +1 from strat mobility and an additional dig in cap along with boosts to all other troops. But how is the organization tech? Would make my armies heartier so they can stay in there and do the attrition killing.

I'm pretty sure that Dreadnoughts and Battleships using fuel as fuel rather than coal is not historically accurate. Allow your factories to buy from stockpile in the trade tab, then set trade on whatever goods you need to 2000. Do this for rgos like rubber and fuel that are in high demand and you'll be able to buy tanks, dreadnoughts, and airplanes late game.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of EU4, it's my first grand strategy. Only question I have is, is it normal for me to be doing absolutely nothing and speeding up time for a while? For example, there's nothing I really want that's available until my tech completes or a diplomatic decision is available in several years. I'm forming alliances with small countries before a bigger country can ally them, with the hopes of improving relations and annexing them in the future. Never played CD like I said, but the way I raided as a chaos worshiper human was I would raise a levy/retinue and turn on raiding, then go to other provinces and raid. during that raiding you can capture courtiers like normal when you sacked a holding, but sometimes during just normal raiding during the siege you would get an event saying you enslaved some humans/elves, which can then be used in the slavery menu in the intrigue tab to sell for gold or for a county modifier.
