1.12 item statistics are overpowered as fuck compared to what was available at launch.
You wouldn't need to artifically buff MC and BWL if you actually bother to get the right stats at each patch and remove items from loot tables which were added much later in the game.

Early early cata before all the dungeon nerfs is seriously an underrated period in wow.

A lot of cata's hate does come from the later patches.
4.1 which was just two rehashed filler dungeons
4.2 created the worst fucking daily quest hub in the game, while firelands was small and filled with trash that nobody liked clearing
4.3 lasted forever and introduced LFR cancer

I think it's still fair to hate on cata as a whole but it was really good early on.

January 2005.

The first character I ever made was an Undead Rogue. I got it to about level 11 or 12 grinding mobs because I thought quests were mostly worthless like in old MMOs. I got trying to go to Orgrimmar because I took the Zeppelin to STV instead of Durator and kept getting killed by Murlocs in that area outside of Gromgol and some dwarf cunt kept killing me after I spirit rezzed and never played the character again.

I then made a Tauren Warrior which I leveled to 52, but never leveled it to 60 the entire time I played Vanilla. Going to Camp Taraujo, running by a bunch of high level Thunder Lizards, and then to the XRoads packed with people was insane, and the first time I did Wailing Caverns it was the most amazing shit ever.

I straight up gave up on my warrior at level 52 and made a Troll Shaman which I leveled to 60.

I made an Undead Warrior which I got to about 42-43, a hunter which I got to about 30, and finally made an Undead Mage which I got to 60, but did nothing on. I played it in TBC instead of my Shaman though. Alliance getting shamans ruined the class for my teenage sperg self. I literally never made a single alliance character the entire time I played vanilla. I played alliance on Nost

I never raided in vanilla because I played on dial-up. I did UBRS a bunch, that's about it. I got Rank 8 on my Shaman. The only piece of good gear I had on my Shaman was Unstoppable Force. I have no idea how I played AV on dial-up, but I played it all day long. The first raiding I did was in TBC.
