From what I've experienced after putting in 600 hours, I'd say it's worth it. Even if you can't find multiplayer games, you can still enjoy 4 campaigns, 5 if you buy ODST which I think is $5 as DLC.
From what I've seen the multiplayer is still alive, at least in H2A, Team Slayer, BTB, and few others. 343i put the playlists with the most population on the top of the selection so pick one of those if you're gonna play the multiplayer.

You could make an argument for the aesthetics (although for many it's simply too dark) but at the end of the day the movement and sandbox of Halo 3 really just doesn't provide as adequate an experience on that specific map geometry.
