What kind of hacking tools for just the Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic games are there? Look at Mario, specifically Super Mario World, that game has a number of hacks still coming out every year because hacking it is pretty easy. Just open up Lunar Magic and then drag and drop stuff to change levels and actually see what you're changing. Until Sonic gets some tools like that, for even just one game, then the hacking scene will probably continue to peter off.

As for its tone, while it's certainly darker than Colors-Lost World, I really don't see Sonic Team going as serious and grimdark as Shadow/06 ever again. It's true that we don't really know anything about the game and it could go in any direction, but between their record and the fact that they're opening doors that could go really bad if they don't know what they're doing, it's not crazy to be cautious.

It's also true that if they went with something very safe we would criticize them too because of that and the big amount of time they had to come up with it, however.

You will never have any blessing from /sthg/ ever. Do it anyway. Just consider what the Boom aesthetic typically goes for instead of just slapping on generic looking clothes.

In the main universe, all the "good" areas look sleeky, shiny and colorful, even nature, while the "bad" areas look grungy and worn-down. This is reversed in Boom: the "good" areas are more rustic and natural while the "bad" areas like Eggman's lair look like Apple stores. So Bump should be wearing outdoor athletic gear, maybe mountain climbing gear, while Sage should be wearing sleek futuristic space pajamas.

If they can't even design good levels for a game they only had to make for one console with nintendo paying for it up front, what hope is there?
