You'll do fine, you don't need to follow a guide. It can be good to get a guide and have it on backup in case you aren't sure where to head next, but you don't need to follow anything point for point unless you're going for ASAP leveling.
A lot of the quests are actually fun to read, especially if it's your first time. Like someone else said, lots of people will be happy to help as long as you're not a douche. You can ask fags here as well.
Addons and stuff are all personal preference. My advice would be to start without, and gradually you'll get the hang of things and start to see where addons could be beneficial for various aspects of your game. Lots of people use addons to quest, lots don't.

The most popular leveling guides are probably Jame's and Joanas (one is alliance, one is horde, forget which is which). Like I said, if you get stuck, you can google search those to see where to go for your level range. And for quests in general, you can use aowow.com database, it will have old wowhead comments on it.
