There's a tiny indicator in the top right corner of the screen showing the current phase of the moon. Werecreatures transform when it's full.
Those dwarves are going to survive forever in that closet, by the way. The transformation resets their bodies, which includes their hunger counters.

>>
>>161217545
I remember a similar thing happened to me, except only one of the weredwarves survived. I locked her in a hole with a bunch of gates attached to levers, which connected to rooms with furniture. Whenever I noticed it was getting close to that time of the month, I would burrow her in the empty room and seal it. When she was normal she had a whole minifort to herself, with a bed, chest (with clothes), a workshop, a weapons rack and a small shrine to pray at.

Even with all this, she was unhappy. Separated from her children and family, living in complete isolation. I let her out one day, undid all her labours and let her roam the fortress, chatting with people, seeing what they had built while she was confined. She even watched her children play, and breathed the outside air before I burrowed her inside again.

Later, the whole fort died to a forgotten beast. I had the last survivors open her up and give her freedom. She stayed in her cell, and the rest of the dwarves died. Finally while the beast was rampaging close by, she happened to transform and rush out. I expected her to die, but I guess it had been weakened, because she managed to kill.

I cant even imagine the feeling of regaining consciousness, fb blood covering you, naked, and everyone you've ever known, and all the freedom you've never had, destroyed.

I abandoned that fortress and only played adventure mode for a while, but I never found her.

Wherever she is, I hope she found peace.

how big is your population? in vanilla, they won't even consider you as a target until you have 80 dorfs.

even after reaching 80 dorfs, you may have to wait a year or two, but they should come. the bug that delayed sieges in 0.40 has been fixed for almost a year now.
>>
>>161231758
>There's people who don't drop sieges to 20 dwarves
>>
>>161231992
Well, ever since joint damage was introduced, I have found sieges to be MUCH harder. The old combat system, where deflected shots or bruises didn't cause any damage, favoured the lone legendary militiadorf. The new system with joint damage, however, makes it easier for one of the many attacking gobbos to incapacitate your legendary soldiers with lucky hits.

You don't, you have to edit the raws.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Technical_tricks#Settings_-_init.txt

dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Technical_tricks#Settings_-_init.txt

They're both as easy to install as DF. Just unzip a folder and run the binary. DFHack require further configuration depending on what you want it to do. The rapist isn't updated to the latest version, and DFHack is still in alpha, but probably works fine. I don't know if the dfhack alpha is for available linux or not. Find it on github and see for yourself.

3x3 embark and limit your population, that way you can control most invasions and sieges. Once you feel you're ready, take the limit off and pay attention to the number of dwarves x FPS.

Next fort you'll have some idea of what to do and how much you can handle without FPS death.

In his defense, the alligators are just bad luck. Anyone who plays long enough will eventually lose a fort on day one to gators or hippos or harpy husks or something like that. But losing to goblins or FBs is just unskilled play.

Also I hate were-lemurs now, pic related

It finally happened, /dfg/
I lost my first fort to a weremoose.
I lasted about three years and then that fucker killed 4 dorfs and injured 5 others, who I shoved in a hole to die
I would've been fine if those 9 dorfs hadn't been the ones farming/gathering/brewing all my alcohol
Winter came, river froze, I was out of booze. Everyone dehydrated before spring. Not too bad for my first fort, I guess.

Sounds similar to my first fort. Only it was a weremoose and I didn't know that werecreatures were building destroyers so the 15 victims I had locked away broke out and slaughtered my fort from the bottom up.
>>
>>161286491
does the level of the animal trainer matter?
>>
>>161287781
I think it's a minuscule change so not much. Animal training and animal caretaking in general pretty much sucks at the moment. When you have a war dog who has taken down dozens of intruders but, is left crippled by a punch to the right rear paw by a kobold and can do nothing but crawl for the rest of its life you've got a problem.
>>
>>161287781
It doesn't affect the amount of knowledge you gain from training, if that's what you mean. It does affect the training level of the animal.
>>
>>161290807
if i want knowledge should i be training wild animals with dwarves who have no animal training experience so they revert to wild faster and can be trained again for knowledge?

I suppose, if all you want is knowledge and the training quality doesn't matter to you. You'll be better served in the long run by a handful of highly skilled trainers, though, especially if you plan to do large breeding programs. Even moreso if you plan on keeping animals that can't be tamed as children.

>>161294991
Ah. Well, they don't have a child state, so the last bit applies. I think you'll be better off getting some legendary animal trainers by training a whole lot of other animals. Over the course of a even a long-running fort you're not going to have enough training opportunities to raise your civ-level knowledge by any appreciable degree, even if you use an unskilled dwarf every time. The individual trainer's skill is more important to the final result than the civ-level knowledge anyway, so a few legendary trainers should be your priority if you ever want your dragons to be useful.

Large rooms must have supports (I don't always follow the 6x6 rule, but I do try to make rooms look structurally sound).
No staircases wider than 2x2.

I also give my outdoor buildings mansard roofs by default. Flat roofs are allowed, if there's a reason for it, but mansard roofs are the majority.

>>161355656
That's kind of true and kind of not. They take 2 ticks longer per attack than most other weapons (for comparison an average dwarf takes about 9 ticks to move one tile at a walking gait) and have a more severe accuracy penalty for multiattacks, however they still have the same 5x velocity multiplier on their attacks that they've always had. The damage formulae are unaltered from when whips got their reputation as lightsabers, but skulls are a little thicker and pain was significantly nerfed, which circumstantially make whips less effective at what they were best at: chipping a bone to make the enemy pass out and then exploding their head. That affected every weapon, though, not just whips. They're still unreasonably effective, and a silver whip is still a good contender for the most optimal blunt weapon an adventurer can find.
>>
>>161369397
I believe building a wall on top will destroy them. I usually make all the plots before breaching caverns to avoid that.

>Winter came, river froze, I was out of booze. Everyone dehydrated before spring. Not too bad for my first fort, I guess.

I honestly don't get how so many people can have this happen. The only time I've ever come close unintentionally (so discounting challenge games where I forbid myself from farming etc) was on my second fort ever, back in 2008 when I was largely just goofing around, then noticed that my dwarves were dying of thirst while I was paying attention to other things. Even then, less than half of them died and I went on to build a big tower and run out of stone, then accidentally pierce the aquifer from below while getting more and flood half the fort before moving on to other things.

I don't mean to sound harsh. I really have trouble understanding how people can fail to figure out that they can reassign labors or farm aboveground or various other extremely simple basic parts of playing the game.

It wasn't anything fun thankfully, I had never dealth with book closely before so I got surprised with "secrets of life and death" message. Both dwarves had those traits before reading the book, it was just a coincidence.

Also, as adv mode companions, elves have the added benefit of not running off chasing random wildlife all the time.

Dwarves are the only race to use steel, making them the technologically most advanced race.

It's not. Adamantine can cut through any metal proc-genned creatures can be made from. Gas demons can be killed by literally any hit at all, though I'm pretty sure that only applies to steam, I can't think of another gas they can be made from.
It's the ones with deadly dust, webs, and poisonous vapors that are really dangerous no matter what material they're made from, and the ones made out of fire that explode on death.
Also, their size is 10,000,000. 50k is smaller than an average adult dwarf.

>>
>>161381531
If the moat is wider than one tile, you'll need a running start to jump over it.

I'm not sure whether the combat AI understands this. Maybe the first werebeast stopped running for some reason, making it unable to jump over the moat. The second one may have kept its momentum, making it able to safely jump over the moat.

One thing is for certain: making a block wall inside the moat will stop everyone but the most proficient climbers, and might actually make the AI unable to initiate the jump at all.

Anyway,
>Eggs may be fertilized when laid, or they may not. In order for eggs to be fertilized, a male of the species must be present (though this does not always guarantee fertilization). Unlike in previous versions of Dwarf Fortress, the male must be able to path to the eggs to fertilize. Depending on the animal, fertilization chances seem to differ.Verify If the creature is part of an actual civilization, then the egg-laying female must also be married in order for her eggs to be fertilized, and she likely must also be able to path to her husband. (In short, egg fertilization has the same conditions as normal impregnation in the game.)

You can dig as you wish in the ice, and the ice can be smoothed just fine.

Getting through the aquifer is a bit tougher, since the aquifer water will immedeatly freeze if exposed to the sun. If you use the ordinary pump methods for getting through it should work though, as long as you leave a natural ice roof above it.

Also, the aquifers will provide you with water, even if you fail.

Ok I finished some tests

Out of 100 rounds, the human with the two-handed sword won 53 times and the human with the long sword won 47, they had steel weapons and armor and grand master weapon and armor user skills. This is the first time the human with the two-handed sword managed to win more times than the human with the long sword.

I've also did some test with humans with two-handed swords and short swords.

Out of 100 rounds the human with the two-handed sword won 38 times and the human with the short sword won 62, they both had no armor and no skills.

With grand master weapon skills the human with the two-handed sword won 43 times and the human with the short sword won 57 times.

The results are similar to the ones of the tests with the human with the two-handed sword versus the human with the long sword.

The next tests will be with armor.

If two weapons have the same atacks, materials propierties, etc. but one is double the size of another, would this bigger weapon be ''better''(have more reach)?
I've been wondering for some type now, If you want to make it, this would be a good test
>>
>>161420054
Well

I guess it would be better if it was a blunt weapon like a mace, since it's better it should weigh more. I'm not sure if you can increase something's size while maintaining the same weight and material.

And all melee weapons have the same reach, as far as I know.

Don't forget to post the link on the weapon page of the wiki under "combat testing"[1]. Ideally you would describe your methodology in detail and compare it with the other combat tests.
There's a link with testing done by a user at the bottom of the weapon page [2] and more (outdated) combat testing can be found on the armor page [3] with links to forum posts [4][5].

Is it possible to influence a location that a ghost haunts? I want to build a prison wing and then abandon it and fill it with ghosts, but I read that ghosts just wander or haunt their relatives. Check the wiki page, some ghosts drift around their place of death. That's probably what you want.
On the other hand, it says they also drift around frequented places, so that might not work as controlled as you want it to.

Only intelligent creatures won't commit incest. Animals will mate with any heterosexual member of the opposite gender and same species. It's pretty common to kick off a breeding program with a single pair of wild-caught parents and then just use their tamed offspring afterwards. Although with dragons you obviously won't likely want to discard the parents, as a grown dragon is a lot harder to replace.

what's this new misinfo I'm reading? ghosts don't smash dorfs against anything. they punch, and that's it. because of ghost magic, the punches will be enough to sever body parts.

there is enough misinfo about the game out there already. it's a problem, because from my experiences with the bay12 forum, a blatant misunderstanding becomes a fact if it's repeated often enough.

in some cases, people have even edited the wiki and added totally false information there, simply because it had become "common sense" in their circles on the forums.

I'm pretty sure the Extra mancers/wizard secrets are just kinda broken, the extra mancers kill themselves half the time and the summons from the secrets mod like wine men tend to just disintegrate instantly on any contact
>>

I've noticed that. Alot of their "spells", like spraying wine or boiling metals end up getting on them first thing, which making them freeze/melt to death.

>(Toady One) All right, the new encounters are done. If a situation goes particularly badly, an artifact seeker can kill an artifact holder and then actually remember to pick up the artifact to bring it back to wherever they are going, which is unusual since adventure mode characters are generally so oblivious to ground objects. Or it can be more happy. I suspect that next month will start with work on the agents and ne'er-do-wells we promised back in the Sept 26 log.

Speaking of criminal activity:

>captain of the guard mentions having been in an argument with the bookkeeper
>rumors of an "insurrection" with no further detail
>blood on the floor and somebody crawling around with his guts hanging out

Well, in the current game, criminal groups are treated as political rivals of the ruling local government. There is also a mechanic for insurrections. I don't know if that's what happens when they attack the keep though. I do know that insurrections show up in legends, however, so I guess you could check the legends after the bandits attack the keep and see if it shows up as such.

They knew they weren't on good terms with the folks up top now, where before they had just kinda lived down there without really having an issue between them.

After the update he had to assign zones for the criminals to linger in, so they knew they were supposed to lurk under the town, not swarm out of it.

You got the same thing in reverse with townsfolk wandering into the sewers, best part was when there were tombs and they'd go tripping into weapons traps and waking mummies, then there's blood everywhere and nobody has a clue why.

Need some adventurer mode reactions.

Easy way to do it in an existing world is copy your reaction_carpentry.txt and rename it with a . or make it hidden manually however windows does it, then edit the products to be armor, then you'll have adventurer only reactions to make gear for yourself with. Just because a log goes in, that doesn't mean something wooden has to come out, so you can play with it as you see fit.

reactions can't be added without making a new world, though

I think smaller creatures have a decent amount of points as it stands. Maybe accelerate the curve as we approach things like gnomes, or anything under 25k size.
Coldsteel went through a nice skill progression as the games went on, being able to reach master sword at an ideal time round-wise.
The reason I suggest a nerf at the top end rather than a buff at the small end is mostly due to the way DF size means a lot.

I agree with you anon. I always felt that even though Joseph Merrick was hands down the largest thing in the arena whenever he stepped in I knew he wouldn't win because he wasn't skilled in anything. I allowed him 50 points but, his manager didn't use them so he could double his points just in case Joe made it to the next round. Even if he did use the 50 I still doubt he would've been able to win now that it's all over.

As it stands I still don't know what to do for points in the next tournament and am still up for suggestions, so keep them coming.

The wiki says your dorfs get an unhappy thought once the caravan leaves the map.

Swords are very versatile and useful in player hands, but the AI has no idea how to use them properly, so it's best just not to give them any.

Shortly after the attack, I got a migger wave. One of them turned out to be a former scholar, so I employed him in my library, where he soon proceeded to take on every single one of my other, unproductive scholars as students.

He seems to be pretty prolific. Within a few days, he's already written his first book. It's strange how badly he reacts to discussions, though. Also, his book is described as having "depressing" prose.

Holy shit, one of my miners just pulled off the coolest stunt.

You see, I was about to finally fill up my water reservoir by piercing a freshwater lake from below. I had it all set up, floodgate to limit the water flow and all. However, the water pressure turned out to be far greater than I imagined, and the miner who pierced the lake quickly found herself trapped in a submerged stairway. At this time, I was sure that she was a goner, and returned to check on the water level in the reservoir.

Then I noticed some announcement like "miner cancels x: dangerous terrain", and when I checked back in the stairwell where I last saw her, she was gone. Using the 'z' command from the 'u' screen, I found that she was hanging onto one of the cliffs above the lake. A few moments later, she was on safe ground.

Not only did she manage to defeat the water flow in the submerged stairwell, she also managed to climb her way back from the cliff towering over the lake.

Fuck, she's getting a monument.

So does elevation correlate with temperature? I want to embark on a high mountain with snow and ice and build a temple-monastery with warrior monks with visitors to the temple and library having to traverse snowstorms and mountainous terrain.
>>
>>161507520
You can't embark on a mountain. Your embark must contain at least one non-mountain tile.

Elevation correlates with wind exposure (for windmills)
Temperature depends on a procedurally generated temperature gradient from worldgen.

I don't know if elevation plays a role in modifying that afterwards. But you could always make a custom temperature map in perfect world and use a tool like "embark anywhere" - or whatever it was called.

Coldsteel's manager here. I don't think having more points would have made a difference. As it is, in just a 16-man tourney I was able to max Coldsteel's weapon skill and buy an adamantine longsword. I could have (should have, but rule of cool and all that) put the point for the weapon into dodging instead and gotten pretty close to max in that as well.
On the other hand, Sten was able to get his weapon skill to high master, which was just one level below max, leaving a tiny gap in what was inarguably the most important skills in the tournament, and he matched Coldsteel's dodge as well IIRC. Coldsteel wouldn't have had any reasonably effective place to put extra points, but would've benefited a lot by having a bigger weapon skill gap. If balance is the aim in a point-system revision giving smaller creatures more points isn't going to achieve that.

>>

First pick up her corpse then retire in a nearby hamlet or wherever. Next start a fort near to the place you just retired at with the sole objective of making a tomb, you could do this with just a 1x1 embark and 6 miners with a stoneworker. Retire the fort, don't abandon it. Go back to adventure mode and select your character. Travel to your new "tomb" and lay your waifu to rest. You may not be able to officially bury her but, its the closest thing I can think of.

Alternatively you could build her a small wooden shrine out innawoods using the adventurer mode carpentry.

One of the old stories on the site is about a self-described monster hunter (cursed with some sort of ability to see spirits others can't or some shit during a previous adventure) who stops the evil spirit, but instead of destroying it or whatever he binds it to his will to kill the betrothed/most notable suitor of the mayor's daughter to try to get her to run away with him. The spirit however betrays him and outs his nefarious deeds after the deed is done, so she sics the spirit on him (since he had foolishly given the object binding/controlling the spirit to her without thinking)
>>
There was also one where an evil wizard kidnaps the lover of a peasant when they ventured too close to his tower when making their romantic getaway, and years later when the peasant is tasked with combating the evil wizard he is confronted by a creature that looks like is love but is actually a monster created from his then-unborn child by the wizard.

It was bound to a ring I think, and he gives it to her to try to woo her, and then the spirit (now inhabiting the brutalized corpse of the suitor) shows up on her doorstep awaiting orders.

I think it's a reasonable approach. Though minotaurs might be a special case due to their naturally high attributes.
I was going to suggest a % reduction as size doubles from 140k onwards, but elephant men are 1mil+ and poor old Joseph got cut down pretty quick (albeit by a naturally agile elf).

I think if people deem those attribute increases too severe then they should have a slight nerf.

And won the tourney with the points he was alotted. And then the second-to-biggest won the battle royale. If your argument is that big creatures were harmed by their lack of points, it clearly isn't the case except for the elephant man, whose manager chose not to spend any points.

You gain fetish points for examining (like 'L'ooking) at naked people. So like if you see a lot of naked studs around you'll get turned on by dudes, naked women make you attracted to them, looking at your own naked body in the mirror gives you a fetish for yourself, ect. Seeing things that you find hot will get you horny, which is an actual status effect. You can relieve this by asking to fuck another person (NPC or player). You can also do this for money. The system is basically you ask them to bang and then you do it, with a brief sentence explaining what's going on in that turn. Also, if you aren't aroused by whatever you are trying to bang it obviously won't work. Its a bit wonky but yeah.

but sten didnt win thanks to his points, but to his size. he won SAF even when his points were misplaced, making his attacking skill null. So to handicap large creatures isn't a solution in my mind, but making smaller ones better.
the elephant is another good example, because of his size he only got 50p. so should this still be lessened? in my eyes even 50 is too little.

>he won SAF even when his points were misplaced, making his attacking skill null
That was obviously a quirk of rng and a poor choice of arena, as was SAF's subsequent victory.
Sten didn't win any of fights due to size alone, or the elephant man would've cakewalked to the victory, and Coldsteel would've lost twice on the way to the final. The only way altering the number of assigned points in the first tournament would've made a Sten victory any less of a forgone conclusion would've been by reducing his points. Small characters being more "versatile" is a meaningless distinction when only a couple of skills had any significant impact on the results of the combat. Versatility is useful for adventurers, tourney combatants only need to be able to kill effectively. Sten had enough points to keep his weapon skill up with the smallest of tourney combatants, rendering size-based differences point allotments moot.

I mean, it would be rad if you could smash people against stuff, and I hope Toady adds it on the future, as another adding to weapon-less combat
Imagine it, you raise a gobbo in the air by the head, and smash/throw him against the stone needle of a close statue, he gets impaled by the shoulder, and has to free himself up or die there from starvation
>>
>>161575924
>That was obviously a quirk of rng and a poor choice of arena
but tourney anon said that he won her the normal way, meaning beating with combat rather than how he then actually lost
>only a couple of skills had any significant impact on the results of the combat
beyond laughable, of course combat skills have a significant effect, as you said the huge elephant man lost to a puny elf because of the points. His trainer decided not to use any, because he had so little that the 2x rule was the only path to his victory with the current system.
>Versatility is useful for adventurers, tourney combatants only need to be able to kill effectively.
I'm not talking about having multiple weapon skills and such as in adv mode. I'm talking about smaller creatures having dodging, blocking, armor user etc more highly leveled than the larger combatants, while them still having enough points to make interesting enough characters without having to only level 1 or 2 skills so that they have a chance in a viable build.
>Sten had enough points to keep his weapon skill up with the smallest of tourney combatants, rendering size-based differences point allotments moot.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but are you claiming that if small creatures had more skills they would never actually win if the larger combatants have even little skills? Not to sound like a autist, but source please. Because if that is true, then your method is the only correct one, but in my thinking a more fun and a viable way to do it is to give more points to the smaller combatants.

Yeah I think maybe it's attributes which are up for debate here. We don't know how much of an impact they're having.

Testanon, if you're about, would you mind pitting 50 vanilla minotaurs against 50 minotaurs with attribute ranges pulled from dwarves/humans?

In my mind, we need to answer:
1. Are the naturally high attributes of a minotaur making a significant difference?
2. Is each arena-minotaur created equal, or is he randomly assigned attributes upon spawning?
>>
>>161576853
Tourneyanon said that both fights were decided by who dodged into magma first.

Yes, combat skills are the only ones that were important, and both Sten and SAF had enough points to keep pace with their smaller opponents.

Weapon skill is a primary defensive skill as well. Sten had plenty of dodging, in her final fight SAF had plenty of dodging and blocking (as well as multiple shields). Armor and the armor user skill are pointless, broken by force translation. The bigger the enemy, the less valuable armor becomes. Apparently most participants knew that because most spent nothing or almost nothing on armor. As for interesting character builds, the smaller combatants were focused in 1-2 skills as well. A few had token investments in discipline and observer, but they were all built around a primary weapon skill with 1 or 2 defensive skills getting the remainder. The fighters that invested most heavily in weapon skills (i.e. Sten and Coldteel) did best.

No. I'm saying the difference in points wasn't enough to make up for the size difference. As I noted earlier, Sten and Coldsteel only had a 1 level difference in their weapon skills, which were the primary determinants of combat effectiveness. Coldsteel couldn't have gone higher, he was maxxed. More points wouldn't have helped except in a very marginal sense, whereas Sten having a lower weapon skill definitely would have. That's the point of the argument I'm making; if large creatures have enough points to reach near-maximal combat effectiveness in only 4 rounds then it doesn't make any difference how many extra points small creatures get. It doesn't balance the tournament because characters with an inherent advantage can still quickly approach the maximum level of the most valuable skill.

I'm still not convinced that a minotaur with high weapon skill cannot be defeated by a smaller creature with many different combinations. I think to assume that necessitates more information than what we have now.
Someone should test a a minotaur with max axe skill against different small creatures having dodging, wrestling, etc skills as max and see what the results are.
>>
>>161582773
One example might be a goblin with blocking/armor/weapon skill in max and to see how much armor and what quality materials are needed for the goblin to win.

>I'm still not convinced that a minotaur with high weapon skill cannot be defeated by a smaller creature with many different combinations.

Of course they can't, because weapon skill is the most important in fights like these. Wrestling won't do jack shit for a smaller creature against a bigger one anyway.

There is a super easy way to balance the next tournament and that is giving the smaller creatures more points.
>>
Talking about wrestling

I was checking the old powergoals and I found two interesting, 69 and 79.

The description talks about a giant creature called Horak, and how two princes found it and got swallowed whole by it.

The second one talks about a story that says that the Horak cannot be harmed by blades, so a barbarian that is accompanying the adventurer decides to wrestle it and tear it apart with his own hands.

It doesn't say the barbarian was human-sized, but maybe in the future smaller creature will be able to become strong enough to wrestle bigger creatures.

Lads I think I've reached enlightenment. I've played DF for a few years at this point and understood most stuff like taverns, magma, military, and other obtuse stuff but I never dealt with stuff like cave-ins or intense liquid management, or pump stacks, but in my most recent embark I started with no soil so I decided to try out irrigation with floodgates and pump stacks, as well as killing a bronze colossus with a cave-in and it all make sense now. The fuck did you get me doing man?

I just tried to figure out how to do this for you, figured maybe I could hack the angels into the arena via gm-editor fuckery but couldn't get it figured out at first so I went into one of my active saves and switched over to arena mode (mode set > 3 > ctrl+a) and had an idea: "I bet there's a big fat fucking flame blob sitting down in hell..."

So, ghosted my way up to the surface and started plinking people, but I can't attack, no limbs or whatnot right?

Then I remembered the first maxim of Maxâ„¢: a minecart is a valid answer to literally any question.

So I'm trundling around running over gobs and doing drivebys when I wipe out and kersplode on a bunch of them, dead... but wait!

Ghost myself back up onto the cart, heal my body back, and thus began the reign of the first flame demon jihadist.

I'm for that change, but if it truly is so that small creatures CANNOT win if large ones have even 1 good weapon skill, then giving large creatures less is the only way to go. I don't buy that though. Test a goblin with full armour and legendary skills vs a minotaur with just weapon skill. I'd wager that the goblin has a chance if given enough skills/armor.

One of the key points when the magic arc becomes fully fleshed out is how Toady will ensure a romantic, myth-like aspect.
Taking your example, no normal barbarian would be able to tear apart such a creature. So we either have to create an earlier event where the barbarian becomes super strong beyond mortal means and promptly forgets about it, or the game has to recognise the romantic point of view of a fairy tale.

If anyone's played the Witcher games, in the 3rd one Geralt talks about how curses aren't broken by mere force or application of magic, but by exploiting their own narrative, which often appreciates a sense of irony.
It's mentioned in the books as well, and I'm hopeful that the toad&co will be able to retain some sense of this when it comes to their final realisation, as myth and magic exists primarily, in our culture, to tell a story and teach a moral lesson.

But I'd also be content with hacking apart dragons after drinking my Magical Plump Juice.

I have yet to have an actual goblin siege, or any siege.
So far I've only been attacked by two panda men that my nihilistic miners have picked to pieces, then vomited over 10 times.
All I can find on my embark is fucking zinc
Where do I get better metals
What do?
I'm okay with the fortress running as it is, but not much is happening...

And in the previous picture, >>161551805, I assume that's an American bald eagleman, but what are the others?
>>
>>161636201
not him, but my guess is that the kobolds are hungarians. it'd make sense to picture them that way, considering the anti-hungarian sentiments in europe at the time. the germans themselves would probably be portrayed as something stronger, maybe humans.

Is there a way to know if an evil biome has reanimating before I embark (or is there a way to turn of reanimating biomes in world gen?). I don't mind weather than reanimates etc. but I don't want to deal with it at my current skill level.
>>
>>161638146
there's nothing wrong with avoiding re-animating biomes, considering how game-breakingly broken things like re-animated skin and hair are.
>>
>>161638231
I kinda just want to play a difficult embark for the most part, one with stuff to fight and stuff that will harass my fort. Seems like non-evil-high-savagery stuff is still pretty docile.

>>161638146
>>161638360
You can probably test it out by visiting it in adventure mode first
>>
>>161638360
I recommend a necro tower, then. necros have the potential to break your game by resurrecting unkillable body parts, but most of the time they'll escape before getting the chance to do so, leaving you with the heavily armed zombies they brought with them.

artifacts created during history, which different groups make claims on.

in adv mode, you take quests to retrieve artifacts for certain groups, and might have to compete against other adventurers who seek the same artifact.

in fort mode, enemy armies can stop on your doorstep and demand that you hand over certain artifacts. you can also send soldiers to other sites to search for artifacts to bring back home.

we're (hopefully) getting this by the end of the year.

Anybody remember the creepypasta with the dude who got a companion who started shanking people and shit without any explanation and then one night they wake up and discover they turned into a giant bat in a cavern across the map?

...I did that.

Fort kept crashing right around 8th of malachite, error log mentioned someone being out of bounds, couldn't fix it, couldn't retire the fort and unretire since the crash hit during the 2 week update anyways.

Got the idea to force switch to my adventurer and hunt down the problem.

Eventually wound up trying to half-assed turn one of the owls in the woods near the fort into a copy of my adventurer right?

So I do it, they look like they should, name, skills, all that shit right?

Switch to arena and take control, switch to adventurer mode.

>screen is dark
>shit
>try to loo[k] around me
>I'm a fucking batwoman in the caverns
>what
>try to rest and use my gm-editor hack to teleport to the surface
>before the pos_x/pos_y for my unit shows up I leave travel mode
>I'm a fucking oppossum way off to the south of where I was
>shit got weird fast
>try to travel again
>tfw you realize your wings itch cause it's damn down here in this cavern
>you're stuck up in the corner of the map
>you can't travel away
>trying to force move yourself away results in you turning into a dingo

So yeah... that's a thing.

In advanced worldgen set number of regional interactions to 0. Evil biome reanimation is the only regional interaction that exists right now. I've seen speculation that doing this may prevent evil weather reanimation as well, but I've never seen any attempt to confirm or refute that.
