Himiko is the only genuinely good Monk that you'll want to use as a Monk. The other good Monks are anyone who has Convert Action, and Seigan who has a pretty damn good hit-all move.

To put it simply, there's not much wrong with Monks as a unit type. They're actually pretty damn good. In terms of base stats, they're just behind warriors and being able to heal yourself in a fight, remove Guard and start every turn with all of your troops really works wonders for you combat effectiveness. The issue with Monks in game is mostly that they've got no good non-generic units outside of Himiko and the others who I've mentioned above (which you'll not be using as Monks) however that issues stems from the biggest issue with the Monk unit type. To be a good Monk, you need to have good Atk, Def, Int, and Spd. Without all of these you end of with a pretty shit unit. It's actually kinda hard to make a Monk who is simply good, they're either shit or great.

I actually did that in my first ever playthrough. The short answer is yes, if you keep Hara around, then you're probably going to always be at war, which is advantageous because being at war prevents some harmful events like being forced into wars with countries that you don't want to be at war with.

Also, being at war with Hara presumably means that you're fighting them often, which is a good thing if you can spare the resources - more battles means more random items and affection being dishes out as rewards for battling.

I'm having some theoretical trouble with SR modding.

There's a part of me that wants to make some sort of 'extreme mode' for the normal game, this would probably entail modding the skills of the enemy house's units with the intent of either increasing the the difficulty of the game within reasonable bounds (e.g. giving every Diviner in the game All-Guard Shiki) or just shaking things up a little (giving Inukai Summon Suzaku). The problem is, how would I actually make these changes work? I've argued many times in the past that to an experienced player, the only actually difficult routes are DK, True, and maybe Isoroku, but all of those routes are hard primarily because of the Demon Army, which is comprised mostly of units which don't exist in the early game, and hence can't be (easily) modded. I fear that any mod I make with the intent of increasing difficulty could easily be bypassed by intelligent play (e.g. just let the Demon Army kill all the enemy houses while you've sat on your ass in mid-map all game preparing to destroy the Demon Army who is much weaker than the modded units you've capped) or worse, could encourage degenerate tactics (5 Initial Time Advance, gg).

Can anyone think of a way to fix this? I would be cheating the player to simply ask them to not use the full range of available tactics in a mod that's intended to increase difficulty, but I would also be cheating the player if I in any way encouraged any of the boring or degenerate tactics which are available to them.

Sengoku Rance is inherently pretty easy because the AI simply can't keep up with a skilled player. The equalizer is supposed to be troop counts, but once troops counts and power levels get high enough, it becomes a race to see who can move first - and thus becomes reliant mostly on RNG (who wins the speed ties? What move does the AI select? Does guard take effect? etc.)

The best way to make it harder is to limit the player's options and expand the AI's options, while cutting out bad options for the AI. So for example, give the AI's troops better skills. Upgrade usually useless skills like the Mikos' healing. But don't give the player those advantages. This forces the player to make due with what they have, which can be difficult.

What I wouldn't recommend is jacking up stats or troops counts. It doesn't make the game much harder, all it does is force the player to reload for good RNG. Keep the troop count around the level of Five-Star, maybe a bit higher, and only buff a few stats.

You can also limit the access of the player to events that give them more options than the AI. For example, the player can equip their units with items but the AI can't. That's unfair for the AI. The player can also get some events that help them, like assassinating Shingen and things like that.

Finally, the player can recruit troops from all over the map, while the AI is stuck with their own troops. Consider buffing the generics so they're not at such a huge disadvantage when using those.

In the end though you're limited by the poor AI. No matter how you buff the enemy, they might still decide to use a healing skill to restore 3 troops or deploy gathered footsoldiers instead of their uniques. Just try and make those things happen less, and the game will become harder in a good way.

Of course. The player is always at an advantage against the AI because they can strategize like that. But if you limit their options and make the AI's options better, it becomes harder for the player to create surefire strategies.

For example, there's the classic Urza+Kenshin combo to decimate the enemy's Action Points and let you run train in the later part of the battle. The AI will literally never pull that off because Urza is exclusive to the player anyway, while the player can abuse it to no end. But what if Accurate Shots required preparation, so it's harder to spam at the beginning of a fight? What if more enemy units had Advance Initial Time to prevent the player from grabbing too much morale in the later stages of battle with that technique? What if some ENEMY units got Accurate Shots instead and used it against the player?

It's things like that you can do to make the game more difficult. Maybe more nations besides Takeda have access to cavalry. Maybe some of the houses hire Knights from the continent. You won't ever stop the player from pulling off great strategies, but that's not the point. The point is to force the player to use those great strategies to actually win.

An example from the Grand Melee: I was fighting One-Eye and they kept defending using Omachi. Normally I don't use Suzume in my battle roster because she's not that good. But in that specific instance I used her together with Urza's Accurate Shots to cancel Omachi's Great Lightning and turn the battle around. When the enemy has really good options like Great Lightning, the player is forced to come up with new strategies to beat them. An "extreme" mode of SR should be all about that.

Honestly I agree with you, the only things stopping me from going that far are firstly the amount of effort that would take and secondly the fact that I disagree with handicapping the player.

In an ideal world, the player will always have access to degenerate techniques like 5 Initial Time Advance users, but should never want to or have to use them, however the stronger you make the AI, the more likely it is that you'll give the player no other choice than to use these tactics (e.g. try doing a non-degenerate run of the Demon King route, entered via the True Route and after losing your Permits).

Y'know, all said and done, it's no wonder that I consider the hardest part of 5SNB to be Ashikaga.

I don't know shit about balancing 5*, but here's my two cents. The scariest units a house has are usually their uniques. So make a house have a few more units on that level (Not all of them, if everyone's super good nobody will stand out)

That way, you can't fix the AI and it's questionable unit compositions, but there's a better chance it'll draw the Shimazu-brother-tier unit out for the player to plan around

Any character with prisoner recruitment cost of 999 can't be captured in battle. It's stored in the 4 bytes right before the character's sex. (which is already part of the unit table)


Some thoughts on making SR more easily moddable:

It's pretty easy to call external scripts from System4 code. That means we could move gameplay code and game data into plain text files which can be edited without compiling or even restarting the game.

Even though the decompiled source is very accurate, some information is lost in the compilation process. For example, all references to constant values are replaced with the value itself.

This makes things like adding new territories much harder than it should be, as the hundreds of references to 'const AMOUNT_OF_TERRITORIES' were all replaced with the magic number '33'.
