I've gotten to Harth using only the Long Sword and I'm starting to wonder if now is a good time to branch out and find a secondary weapon to use, and if so what would be a good balance to the Long Sword that I could pick up. I thought maybe the Gunlance or Switch Axe.

CPP is a second stick but controls are livable without it due to target lock

there's a reduced effects setting in gens, it might help
also 4U is a much friendlier starting point to the series and would usually be around 30-40 fps with some drops online on the o3ds

Bow is kinda dookie underwater and blast kinda sucks on (most?) elder dragons from what I understand. Pierce/normal 3 HBG can blow it up pretty fast if you want to stick to gunning, otherwise I like lance/gunlance for the ability to block its enormous hurtboxes and function underwater.

They seem pretty close. Tigrex CB with crit boost gets 279. Hero Strongarm with crit boost gets 275. Without crit boost then yeah, it loses by a lot. 272 to 261. I can't factor weakness exploit into that so I'm not sure what results that would turn up. It would then be 35% chance to crit with Tigrex CB versus 90% chance with Hero. Of course only when hitting a weak spot. Phial damage matters a lot also and I have no idea how to account for that. Tigrex will always have the advantage there because of its higher raw. Just use the Hero Strongarm if you like the way it looks, it's not going to turn out so much weaker that it's not worth using, it'll be fine.

Pretty much just rathalos shit at that point for damage, there's not a lot of great options. Later on you can go for akantor for HGE and a blunt hammer but then you might as well just make dreadking. Nothing beats dreadking for hammer, it has it all. HGE, weakness exploit, attack up large, and wind resist high.

180 raw, 40% affinity, and natural white (for the sliver you get without S+ anyway) still leaves you a few effective raw short of a neutral affinity, natural blue weapon with 220 raw, such as the end of the Obsidian line. The moment you lose that white (or give both weapons S+) it drops even further behind, being weaker than a 200 raw neutral affinity natural blue CB like the Maxila Edge.

The affinity would shore up the difference if it was a question of 280 vs 300 instead of 180 vs 200; good luck in XX.
