I fucking loved it, cried like a bitch and had weird warm feelings of love for a month afterwards.
Recommend me something to fill in this void, except living life, I'm on a break

Love "interactive movie" kind of games like stuff Telltale makes. Heard a lot about LiS so picked it up a few days ago. Finished Ep3 yesterday and so far it's pretty good. Even though I get tears in my eyes when I watch a movie, tvshow or playing a game, haven't cried here yet. But the game does a good job making you feel like shit or sad during some of the choices.

Speaking of choices, I kinda hate that the game forces to choose between the two and there's no middle ground. Like in the end of Ep3 I'd love to have a choice to tell both of them to shut up and stop arguing without taking sides.

The writing is ok but feels a bit lazy. Like by the end of Ep2 I'm pretty sure who's the main bad guy in this game and it's not one of the two that the game is pushing you towards the whole time.

Overall it's a pretty good game with a few flaws that I hope they're gonna fix in the next game. Oh and hope for more voice actors because it ruins the atmosphere for me when one person voices 5 different characters and they all sound the same.

And time rewind is a neat feature.

It's funny that the voice actor thing never bothered me. Then again, I'm not a native, so that probably helped.

And if you love "interactive movie"-type games, you'll come to love LiS sooner or later despite its flaws for that, if not for some of its other qualities (most noteworthily the world, atmosphere and character building). Cinematically and cinematographically, it's pretty remarkable for the medium. And there will be more emotionally heavy scenes in the next episodes, so make sure to finish it and stay out of here until you do.

I'm not a native speaker as well. It didn't bother me that much but it somewhat spoils the immersion when I can clearly hear that Victoria, Dana and Brooke are voiced by the same actress. I absolutely love quality voice acting in games. Overall VA is not bad but it's clear that studio was on a budget (after the not so great sales of Remember Me), which is a shame. Telltale were in the same position but after a few successful games they managed to snag quite a few of great VAs for. IMO. their best game yet - Tales from the Borderlands.

I didn't mean to sound like I dislike the game. I actually really like and enjoy it. Just a shame that the studio didn't have a bigger budget for it

Some of the budgetary constraints also were a blessing in disguise. Such as for the visual style they chose to go for and maybe wouldn't have if their budget had allowed differently. I think they were always going for the soft, not overly realistic, painterly style, but a lot of it could have still looked very different indeed with more "polish", and I can see how it could have been worse off for it. Especially with regards to the characters. The more abstracted and stylistic visuals promote immersion and projection and especially in retrospect make it all feel so much more personal.

And just overall the game has a certain unpretentiousness and charm that I can't help but feel also comes from the fact that they did not have a large budget and did not incept LiS as the success it should later become. It was an experimental project for dontnod - one out of many they'd proposed at that. It is Square-backed, but it still was a very small-scale, practically indie endeavour if you look at the size of dontnod's team.

And while I think most of the VAs did a pretty great job (certainly on their primary characters), it is indeed very noticeable that they do voice multiple chars. It should break immersion, but for some reason it didn't for me. The only time it alienated me was in a scene you haven't seen yet - and it just had me laughing there.

And yes, Gaberoid. Max's arms pretty weird in the second panel though. They are obviously supposed to be drawn against her body, hands pressed into her lap... but it looks either like she doesn't have any, or if you squint even like the chair are her arms, wide shoulders and all. Gabe tried to remedy that with the shading, but it's still weird. Should have drawn down enough to where her rolled-up sleeves ler her arms show.

Seeing Chloe in all her skull-dress-wearing glory wouldn't have been bad either!

But nah, first half hour of Episode 1 will be dedicated to showing the supporting cast getting wiped out through their POV. Then I think for the next few episodes we'll have Max and Chloe suffer crippling depression.

Due to positive fan reception we'll maybe consider letting Kate survive. Though it would be with fewer limbs and family members. I think that would result in some great character development.

They were onto him and they could find out what really happened to Rachel/Kate. In best case scenario for Nathan, he would end up in jail. It was natural self-preserving action.
And the phone call showed us that he regretted most things he had done and he knew that he deserved to get rightful punishment for his actions, so he just accepted his death (he could have called the police/tried to run/fight) and decided to warn Max in attempt to save her life.

Except it does. It shows us that Nathan has finally realized how evil things he had done. He realized he is responsible for Rachel, Kate, Max and Jefferson's whole killing spree. I believe that Nathan in this moment would have tried to save Max in the Dark Room just like David did.

Most of all he seemed to regret that Jefferson was now out for him. He could have survived. Face legal and medical consequences. After a decade or two live a life somewhere, somehow. He does not deserve to die, but he does deserve a lot of the bad shit coming his way and he does not deserve the pity of Max, his victims or their loved ones. They deserve to never have to see or hear from him ever again.

During the confrontation in the principal's office, we can see the conflict between Nathan and Jefferson, when Nathan realizes that Jefferson doesn't give a single shit about him, and Jefferson realizes that Nathan is too unstable to be kept around.
Naturally, Nathan has no clue what to do now.
Turn himself in and go to jail at best ?
Try to keep working with Jefferson who wants him dead ?


I am not defending Nathan because I think he isn't evil. I am defending Nathan because he is just another Jefferson's victim. Jefferson didn't kidnap him. And he didn't kill him. He made him a monster, which is a lot worse.
That's why I believe he deserves some empathy, not the endless hate he gets on this general

And yes, there is the possibility to assume that he did not know Rachel had died after he dosed her. That Jefferson constructed for him to not know, knowing he would freak if he did, and took the shots of him with Rachel with the intention to be able to scapegoat him later on. So now he did know they were directly responsible for the death of a person... but instead of showing regret or remorse he stares at her jump in awe, then acts like an asshole in Wells' office and then goes to watch her sexual assault video that he was responsible for (it could be that someone else drugged her at the party and he just used the opportunity, but it's highly unlikely), probably masturbating furiously to the image of her dead body in his fucked up mind.

But still, hybristophilia does apply here regardless of romantization of the actions specifically - it's enough that they are romanticized indirectly through romanticizing the idea of "the boy behind them" or more specifically that of "fixing the boy behind them".

Especially because the game does play at this angle, making "justifications" for his actions, sob stories and portraying him as a victim to an extent - they even make Max explicitly say "I hate what he's done... but I can't hate him." - which is questionable already (but maybe she just cannot outright "hate" him, which is characterally reasonable), but any idea that Max would forgive him. actively want to help him, consider him redeemed or justified or excused in his actions (and not to mention have feelings for him) is just ridiculous.

And I can't explain such sentiments but by some romantical fascination of the people that do that. As a reaction to the game, or maybe amplified/encouraged through other fan renditions of his character.

Nathan is a well-developed character. His character story is the deepest in the game besides Max and Chloe's, and we hardly even see him; dontnod really did the "gap" thing brilliantly with him. There's much to think about between what we see and don't see, and it all somehow makes sense characterally and narratively for him. And he is a truly tragic character. The only character tragedy in this game I can truly appreciate (Rachel was certainly tragic, but not well-developed enough as that; Kate just plays too little a role, but her "function" is still appreciable; Chloe's "tragedy" is unacceptable to me - it's just cruel and impossible).

So I can understand interest and types of fascination with his character (even though I can't help but mostly just think of him as a psychotic creepy whiny cowardly fuckwad, lol). But it goes too far, indeed.

It's great. Max is very tame, until it's something she absolutely wants. And Chloe is one of those things.
Chloe acts a childish in that she flirts and plays around to give (Not so subtle) hints. Max bypasses all that and goes straight for it. It's ridiculously adorable in the game and would continue to be throughout their lives.

Finished the game.
The writing is wonky. I kinda knew since Ep2 that Jefferson is going to be the main bad guy. The game just puts too much contrast between him and people that the game is forcing you to suspect. Like all the seemingly bad guys turned out to be not so bad. I got a feeling that Frank is going to be our "buddy" in the end after meeting him for the first time. Same goes for David. Nathan was kinda bad but his mental health made him a puppet so in the end I even felt sorry that he died. Now if the main bad guy was Warren or science teacher then yeah, would definitely be a shocker for me.
Also, I wasn't much of a fan of the "supernatural" storm stuff and most of the Episode 5. I think they overdone it with the nightmare sequence. Got some Max Payne "nightmares" flashbacks during that section. I would've like if the game ended by busting Jefferson. Ending was kinda forced but I went with save the friend.
Nevertheless I enjoyed the game. Soundtrack (licensed and original) was really awesome. I do wish the game had bigger starting budget so that it was more polished but whatevs, it was still a cool game.

You've pretty much reached the same conclusions a lot of us did. My thoughts about Jefferson when playing were that he was either going to play no role, or a huge one. As you said, he was treated very differently than other characters. He was only seen a few times before the end and he was too "clean".

Good job on saving Chloe too!

Her dying to stop the storm made no sense under the game's logic and Max had no way to know it would have had any effect. Plus it would have been admitting everything she did was wrong and just forcing her to be in an even less secure state than she started in the game. Having not grown at all and only learning she shouldn't try to help anyone ever again. Plus every other character loses the growth they underwent that week.
What a terrible lesson.

As for Jefferson. I had similar thoughts about either big role or none at first but after the game lets you accuse him in the principal's office it pretty much confirmed his role in the game for me. Game tried too hard in forcing you to look the other way, like "Look at David stalking students and taking creep shots. Or look at Nathan, he's a local drug dealer and insane in the brain. Obviously those two are the culprit here." Maybe I'm just playing a lot of videogames to notice that but it does seem like this approach worked for the majority of players since only what, 15% of people or so blamed Jefferson for Kate.

Ehhhhhh, maybe. He's kind of a cartoon character at times. "Get off me bro!" I do enjoy talking to him at the Two Whales and seeing the subtle change in personality when he's alone. He seems nervous and scared. I like that he also acknowledges how weird it is that Max is even talking to him. He is a tragic character but a lot of that occurs off screen. Were told his father is abusive but we never see it. Victoria says he can be nice sometimes but we never see it. Even his phone call to Max happens off screen. I think Nathan has the foundation to he a well developed character but the game never fully capitalizes on it.

His actions are not romanticized in the game, but again, the game does go for that angle to "see the boy behind the actions", and does encourage that romanticization of "a poor soul that only needs help". The more you think about it, the less true it gets, but on the surface level I can see where the Nathan apologist mentality comes from, and why it is easier for people that maybe already were interested in his character (hybristophilically or otherwise) would latch onto that mentality. The game does encourage this, not least with those Max line (which I'm not sure where she says it anymore, but in the Dark Room she also says "I cared more about Nathan than you did.").

And while you could argue all too much happens off-screen to really talk about a well-"developed" character, I've always felt like placing gaps in characters and narrative at the right spots is one of the most difficult thing in story-telling, and I think dontnod has done it remarkably well in a lot of things here, Nathan included. If done right, it's like a step up from "showing not telling". A sort of narrative maieutics.

There's definitely things to talk about that were not done well with Nathan, and obviously I don't like him as a personality, but as a tragic character, I do like what dontnod's done with him. As opposed to much of the tragedy there is with other characters, this one felt thought to its end and brought to proper culmination and conclusion, to me. If in the end indeed a little too much on the "poor boy" side of things, but not enough that it would be irritating. The narrative does definitely make the point that he's disturbed, dangerous, not good, etc. and does not back down on any of that, it just shows that he's not only that. Otherwise it wouldn't be tragic either; a "good" part has to die with him.

There are hundreds of millions of characters out there across all kinds of media, some certainly better written than Max and Chloe, and still they are unique and still the people that like them like them. Don't think a pair of characters more would change anything about that or my view on Max and Chloe. They are incomparable. "Better written" in terms of how dear a character is to you is kind of iffy to begin with; if characters feel real, you don't get much "better" than that in as much as it doesn't get much realer than real.

Any new characters should have their own profile, backstories, and personalities. But they shouldn't be forced to be compatible or anything like that because then you lose a large chunk of the charm.

Primarily how this "being ashamed of himself" aspect plays into why he called Max of all people (she already knew about his "basement", his dark sides, and he hoped she would not hate him) and not for instance Victoria, and how he only admits anything when forced to confront himself with himself, like when beaten up by Warren. As long as it was possible, he avoided facing himself, suppressed that "good" side so to speak.

Obviously that doesn't absolve him of anything, but it makes the tragedy more defined, and also gives a little different perspective on his demise. How it could be a sort of triumph of that "good" side, in one way or another. Still a futile and cowardly triumph, and certainly not redeeming, but making for a bittersweet tragedy on a narrative and personal level (how he embraced that death, how he was looking for silence, all that shit that haunted him finally over, and how fitting that it'd happen at Jefferson's hands and so on - more detailed in those threads somewhere).

I have to disagree with this. For starters, Max saying she cares about Nathan more than Jefferson (I'm pretty sure she never says that btw) means next to nothing.
