Ok sure, but Talabecland is fucking huge and has 2 settlements. Nordland has a panhandle that's empty. The Wasteland is just wasted space, Middenland could easily have 4 settlements like Reikland. And there's basically no reason why each Imperial province can't have at least 3 settlements.

They might be able to make the combat feel more impactful WITH matched animations in the next historical release. Their matched animation system has improved a lot over the years. Rome 2 introduced dynamic combat animation "sequences" that ends in a "random" outcome.

Basically. All warfare, even modern warfare, at the simplest level, boils down to either trying to flank the enemy and attack the rear, and if at all possible create an encirclement, or trying to force a breakthrough in the enemy like with superior force. The second is more difficult in TW since lines often start routing all at once, or if you try to concentrate forces in the center, you end up opening yourself to being flanked since battles in TW are almost always all in affairs.

Force concentration is probably more apt term, seeing as that surrounding the enemy isn't the only way to make that happen and the concept is relevant in operational and strategical levels as well instead of just battles.

True, force concentration is the most fundamental part of warfare. Which is why it kind of pisses me off that you can't do it very well in TW games. It's always:
>Hold the line with some tanky infantry
>Flank with Cav or fast moving infantry
>Ranged units pepper units from behind the main line or from the flanks, unless you're playing Empire/Nappy where infantry is all ranged

I think part of the problem is that, outside of Napoleon and Empire, it's basically impossible to disengage from and enemy with out taking massive losses, nor can you, in any game, make melee units move slowly backwards while staying engaged to create Hannibal style encirclement. You also never keep reserves, since doing so means that the AI is just going to swarm you. There's a breadth of tactical options you're denied due to this.

AoS is a very fun beer and peanuts skirmish game that's cleverly designed and has a lot of work put in to it. As the ambush becomes a battle, 2nd Helmgart is hit with some sort of magical plague cloud that floors them - they and 1st Carroburg are stranded in the forest, chopping away at Gors as they leap from between the trees to charge at them. The terrified men can hear louder and deeper howls and roars echoing throughout the forest, as well as the regular thundering of the cannons.

The demigryph knights are riding clear of the ambush, blasting through before the last escape route is closed off. Arrows are streaming through the trees in all directions, loosed by ungor raiders and the 3 ranger companies.

Minotaurs are crawling all over one steam tank, cleaving at it in an effort to break in, and the two giant brothers are bashing away at another. Karl Franz swoops in and bitch slaps one giant before crashing into a minotaur hammer-first, joining the fight where the danger is greatest.

The winds of magic are blowing hard from the north, and Von Blount the amber wizard goes on an insane spellcasting spree, summoning a manticore and a swarm of angry crows, and granting magical protection to the entire left flank.

In rome and atilla I'd hit, pull out, hit, pull out, hit, pull out and chase down archers

In this game once I'm engaged I can't seem to pull the cavalry out without heavy casualties and a huge wait, and they don't seem to actually kill anything in the charge, and if I try and pull them out, they don't actually seem to kill anything either I have to leave them sitting there fighting, which means they may as well just be fast infantry

Still more or less the same you just need to get a feel how they interact with the enemy units as they charge them, predict how tangled they'll get and how to best address that.
The no kills is probably true but you're also bound to do a fuckton of damage to each unit to the point that when they get into another combat/charged again they'll get oneshot.

It's bretty gud, the combat is actually quite interesting because the hitboxes match the swings. So some weapons will sweep across and hit multiple enemies, some stab/cut straight out ahead, and quite a number do a mix of both in a combo. So at higher level play you kinda have to keep in mind at what step of a combo you're at in order to maximise your attacks and y'know, not get stabbed because you thought that you'd hit a Skaven with a slash, but it was a stab coming up in the combo.

Also a pretty grindable game.

I feel like fog of war needs to come back into your own provinces, so you cant just take some land and be omnipresent in it. Then raiding should become exclusive to its own army type that is limited in size, maybe make them faster than a normal army so the only way to counter them is a smaller patrol army of your own.

That would force you to have lots of smaller patrols guarding your borders, looking for smaller raiding parties and allowing you to see larger troop movements.

Just get one witch hunter/big boss/banshee/thane/exalted hero and deploy them in a province. Spec them into assassination chance and kill any fucker that comes near your territory/lord. I have never had a problem with agents, and it is baffling to me that people can't just use map agents. Hell, I usually have an empire captain running around with my witch hunter so I can assault their units after the lord goes down.

Spec into upkeep reduction in the blue tree for your lord, and try to save up growth/favor for the building that reduces upkeep by 25/50%. There isn't going to be a DLC between elves and Bretonnia

There will be a 2 month period between Elves and the release of the Old World Edition and the Bretonnia FLC. There was a 1.5 month period between Grim and Grave and Green and Grudge and there will have been roughly a 1.5 month period between Green and Grudge and Wood Elves Now getting released. Im getting loads of kills with them.

Im running in and harassing the enemy. Buying time for me to take a good position with my army, then once the actual fights begin, you can basically just micro them behind the enemy melee line. The lack of range doesnt matter at all with the speed and attacking while moving. You can cycle charge the melee lines back too.
As well as cycle charge their ranged line. Theyre basically an everything unit.

As chaos, I dont have the option, but if I did I actually might rather have all ranged cav than any shitty ranged foot soldiers.

I'd recommend the Blood DLC, the blood and dismemberment makes the combat a lot more impactful.

King & Warlord is the only DLC I can wholeheartedly recommend.

I personally love Beatmen, since I have played them on the TT for over a decade, but I'll admit that the DLC might not be worth the full price for everyone.

Everything else is worth it, if you're into the added stuff.

There's nothing stopping them from pumping out more stand alone titles after the first two are out. That said I think their 10 year plan is a bunch of bullshit. I know Warhammer is 30 years old and it has a lot of lore to work with along GW being surprisingly more flexible than they have been in the past. But even with all of that, even if GW let CA make up their own lore for Cathay, Southlands whatever it may be, there is no possible way they'll be able to string this out for a decade. I just don't buy it.

In terms of meaning to us, who have already bought the game, it comes with the Brets and some major gameplay reworks hopefully.

If you're referring to Battlefield One you may be in luck. CA stated that the next historical TW game will be set in an era they've never covered before which ultimately boils down to two things; 16th and 17th century Europe, or the Victorian era leading up to WWI.

Weren't actual city assaults relatively rare by this time, though? Siege battles would probably move back to outlying forts like in Empire 2. If they could get the kind of fortification systems like the ones that existed at Port Arthur and Metz that'd be amazing but given CA's track record with sieges (and what a broken mess star forts were in Empire) I doubt it.

generally speaking city assaults have always been rare. They are just a lot of fun gameplay wise as the city streets add a nice tactical layer that open land battles just don't have.

I could live with star forts and other fort style sieges as long as they worked. Empire was such a fucking disaster with it that I could only stand doing city sieges and putting my troops in buildings.
