its super easy to fix. I only knew because a small mod I made for vanilla stopped working with the patch, and it took like 15 minutes of trial and error to get it working again.

I don't really remember what you have to do, but its something about where a piece of a trade route ends has to match up with where another one starts.

Did you take exploration or expansion to get your Colonist?

I used to think that exploring and colonizing around the Indian Ocean was the way to go with Ethiopia, but the way that institutions and overseas provinces work now makes me think that colonization isn't really worth it unless you can stack huge trade power at one of the end nodes in Europe.

I think the best thing to do might be to blob fast and try to eat Egypt and Arabia before the Ottos can, then work your way through Persia and into India to get the resources to compete with them.

My overall assessment at this point is that taking KMT at the Xinhai Rebellion is foolish. Literally the only advantage is the lovely color and attractive flag. You're forced to choose between the stunted economy of an Interventionist party or the weak military of an Anti-Military party; getting any other ruling party requires years of dedicated NF-wasting or a rebellion. You lose out on all of China's unique decisions like "claim sakhalin" as those can only be taken by QNG, TPG, or CHI. Your militancy is low because the pops are generally satisfied with their Republic, meaning you lose out on the extremely beneficial social reforms. At this point I'm just desperately pushing to elect the fascists even though they have a terrible KMT flag by spamming elections and party loyalty in an effort to take control of my extremely basic industry and turn it in to something useful before I run out of years. Started again, with a new strategy.

I rivaled all the Coptic kingdoms, claimed one of their provinces, and vassalized them. Did the same for Adal.

I fought the Mamlukes/Hejaz/Ajuuran early (they attacked me), nearly died, had Nobility seize power, and went from a -50% warscore to a 10% warscore, which made the Mamlukes agree to breaking their alliance with Ajuuran.

Then took lots of provinces from Ajuuran and made them into three vassals.

Playing the diplo-annexation game, much better than going the conquest route.

Also, the Ottomans made the Mamlukes a protectorate, so I'm just gonna stay off Egypt.

Why doesn't Paradox add a "Sultanate of Women" series of events to the Ottos? It would literally be the best way to model their stagnation and decline.

Start as Ottomans, conquer Byzantium, release as many nations in Asia Minor as you can until Ottos become a 3 province nation on the eastern shore of Bosphorus, then release Byzantine as vassal and choose to play as them. It will even instantly give you Athenian lands and it will be very easy for you to get independence just by blockading the strait. That's closest you can get to an easy mode Byz start.
Downsides include based Paleologos dynasty being gone, your government rank being reduced to a duchy (and government ranks are fucking hard to upgrade in this game unless you have a scripted decision for it, I became a rank 1 superpower before I could upgrade to an Empire again), but other than that it's pretty easy.

From what I've seen so far you can easily blob in SEA, westernizing seems to be slow as fuck though. Also you really have to manage your fleets well. Also lolnomilitary leaders because you have very little officers and the NF is better spent in intellectuals.

If anyone is still lurking, I fixed the huge amount of Turks and Arabs swarming my land. Yesterday I tweaked with the immigration to non-state capitals to 1.8 (default to state capitals is 2, while the default to non-state capitals is literally 0), and for some reason it was causing that whole thing. Changed the immigration factor to non-state capitals to 0.2 and things are far better now.
