They can be destroyed. In combat, they just go invisible but they're still there. Some cabal logs say they were able to take out guardians if they first localized and destroyed their ghost, or if they just nuked the whole fucking place killing both guardian and ghost.
Felwinter also kills some other guardian who didn't want to become an iron lord, and when his ghost goes to rez him he shotguns both the host and then the other guardian again.

If they take enough damage they can be destroyed normally. It seems like Light and Darkness-based weaponry are the most adept at killing Ghosts. The Hive and the Vex have a relatively easy time killing Guardians permanently, but it's almost impossible for the Cabal and the Fallen.

They're damaged beyond repair.

They're still machines, they can fix electronics and revive guardians, but they do it all by manipulating light inside them, so a guardian that's been stripped of light can't be revived (That's why ghost couldn't revive the dead guardian at the entrance to hellmouth) Machines are simple, I'm guessing ghosts repair them by absorbing trace glimmer from air to reconstruct missing parts.

Ghosts themselves, though, nobody but the Traveler knows how to create them, even ghosts don't know how ghosts work, they can just do basic things like channel light to one another or read each other's memories.

If a ghost is stripped of its light or damaged to the point of being nonoperational, they cannot be repaired by anyone, even another ghost.

Ofcourse that's going by the current canon, who knows what kind of garbage bungie will spit out in the coming months and years.

A ghost doesn't need a guardian to be killable. They could have just as easily been separated from their guardian and killed.

You gotta understand, lore-wise, we're like Gen-7 guardian, all these supers and axiom bolts, and golden guns and shit, they're fairly new, something like gen 1-4 guardians or so were literally just ghost-rezzed undead.

Even now the hive and vex can guardians somewhat easily if the conditions are right, during the first few generations of guardians it was probably like taking candy from a baby.
