Prot paladins are good in raids for situational fights but it's pretty rare that anyone mains prot for raids, and even in those situations I don't think it's necessary.
The general rule is you'll be healing at end game but can tank and dps in 5mans while leveling, that applies to druids as well.
However if you don't just want to buffbot/healbot in raids, there is a lot more to do outside of raids. I know lots of paladins raid simply out of necessity to get the gear that they can smite unbelieving dindu scum with. I feel like that is the paladin's true calling anyhow. That and helping their warriorbro rage unhindered to defeat skeletons and africans.

I was holy/prot spec on nost and i tanked/healed/dpsed depending on what the group needed. I tanked gnomer and was like 4-5 levels below the final boss and never had any threat issues. No one else in the group overleveld the content.
Not only could i tank effectively but if i was made to dps i would top the meters if given the chance to aoe.
Paladins are strong as fuck but they mostly just auto attack while leveling which gets old fast when solo.
For raiding you basically either have to heal or if you are lucky you will find a guild willing to let you raid as ret if you shell out several thousand gold for gear for nightfall etc.
For 5 mans you do great, especially seeing as how scholo/strat has a lot of undead.

If you want to roll a paladin to tank 5 mans then do it they are great. Dont listen to these fags, most of the m play horde and dont know shit or they are wrathbabies who heard that "lol only warriors can tank in vanilla"

also keep in mind that the spec you use to tank 5 mans can be an acceptable healing spec in raids as long as you get 2 sets of gear.

What were druids and shamans like in vanilla?

In tbc my first guy was an ele shaman who I ended up not liking because someone told me shamans could eventually tank, so I ended up rolling a feral druid and really liking it.
Might even go for a change of pace and try priest; I just don't like classes that can't do 2 of 3 roles

Pvping as a paladin pre any kind of good gear will usually consist of you healbotting a warrior or keeping the rest of your team alive by spamming heals. Also throwing out the occasional holy shock crit if you like. After getting some gear you can get more offensive by praying for juicy SoC hits and pretty much never dying. Mixing it up with reckoning makes you greag against rogues/warrs or going ret/holy shock gives you a bit more ranged power.

Pvping as a warrior is hell unless you have good gear and a pocket healer. Its a lot of fun with one though.

Cant speak for priests but i imagine they'd be similar to warlocks.

After playing melee characters for 9 years straight, vanilla warlock was the biggest breath of fresh air in my WoW career. I'll quickly say some things about mage

This class is easy to play but hard to master in all aspects. Once you pvp properly as a mage you will be able to control any situation you are in. You are ALWAYS wanted for premade groups over any other class. Having the best food and drink on demand is a huge plus, but so is having to make a ton of it for everybody who asks. Being able to set your hearth anywhere because you can teleport to any major city is a nice perk.

However there are tons of mages competing for raid spots so you are not in the highest demand unless you truly shine among all mages.

I did it with me and 1 other guy at kronos 2 launch, both of us priests, in the undead starting area which was the most heavily populated. We just ran out of deathknell as soon as the server launch and killed bats and dogs until we both hit lvl 5 and then took up the quests in brill and split, we were like one of the first couple of people to start questing and leave tirisfal.

Yeah, it's normal for people to spontaneously invite each other into groups for kill quests if the server is packed. I'd recommend also casually farming whatever mobs you see as well instead of getting too stuck up on finishing every quest. Once you're out of the starting/secondary zones things get easier.
