You, technically, can. If you manage to introduce a sufficent number of different religions to cities neigbouring to your holy city, destabilising it's balance, you will eventually get it to flip back to your faith cause holy site of holy city always makes pressure. Not that this is feasible or worth doing.

In Civ6:

Does the trade route distance matter? If I pick a trade route that gives half the resources as a trade route with twice the distance, does it essentially even out?

What exactly is the downside to creating multiple cities? Is there none?

Do the medics heal everything? By how much? I never actually see them do their thing, and a lack of a combat log sucks.

I don't think there is, and it bothers me aswell. It pisses me off when I've put a few hours into a game only to find my species on the other side of the galaxy as bronze age primitives or as a fucking fallen empire or something.

The game needs a simple option in game creation to force original species with no double ups. Keep it optional to appease both parties, of course.

Finished my King run and honestly it felt like a mess. The AI can't keep up with you if you decided to go all in on a certain win condition. What makes it worse is that it seems like you can't be a pacifist which was very possible in Civ5.

I thought agenda mechanic sounded great at first but it might be the cause of a lot of problems.

Horsemen are the best unit in the game for the first 2 eras.
Scythia gets 2 horsemen at a time (with appropriate civic cards and an encampment you can lower their production time to 1 turn), all of their units heal after killing someone and even if you don't feel like dominating entire map with endless waves of horsemen you can just sell them for absurd piles of dosh and buy anything you want forever.

how do you folks expand in stellaris?

I usually send my fleet around to discover planets while the science ship scans the first few buildable systems, then build 1-2 more science ships and send them all on the same route guarded by the fleet to scan all systems with habitable planets and go from there

any tips or oversights?

Usually, yes. They might trigger an endgame crisis, but unless you're rushing like crazy you can deal with them. The gains usually outweigh the possible disadvantages.

No. AI only gets dangerous once you get the final upgrade to build Synthetics, and even then you can just give them citizien rights and be pretty safe. But it's no gurantee. If another empire builds tons of Synths and treats them like shit until they trigger a crisis your Synths will rebel, too.

ok my fellow Stellaris players, what would you choose to fix to make the game better?
Diplomacy needs a massive fix, if you are in a federation AI's will always vote NO for whatever you want to do, be it war with someone obviously weaker or inviting other races into the federation, especially when they are weaker. It's like AI doesn't see benefit in amassing many small empires in the federation to boost the overall strenght.
Next thing would be war politics, i am steamrolling the AI burning all his planets to ashes while his fleet is nothing but debris so i decide to ask him to surrender earlier:

Or even protectorate/vassalisation stuff.

So what's the secret as Xenophobic in Stellaris. I decided to play Commonwealth as Man which are militant and xenophobic, and I found a good primitive world close to me that had the Strong trait, which are now my soldier race.

Problem is that the more I play the more Ethics Divergence I get so more and more people are not accepting of either slavery or purging, which is causing me to lose a crapton of happiness on several worlds. A lot of my influence is now being used to suppress groups, and there are several factions that want independence. Things only got worse when I annexed some worlds from my enemies.

any kind of warfare is complete joke where you mow down anything the AI has with archers (exactly as in civ6 right now) with basically zero loses. of course this is balanced by the OP as fuck city defenses (until you get something which outranges them) so if you actually want to siege a city before artillery, you are now the AI that throws all your units to die at enemy city so you can get some siege units in position to take it over.

oh well, i guess i'll just play a diplomatic game and enjoy all the features that don't include warfare then. which results in either:

Civ IV has better nonwar, personally.
Also, city defenses aren't OP as fuck--you just need to build and siege with 4-5 catapults. The trick is protecting them as they move/siege.

If you're having a problem with city states, leverage that one social policies tree and control a ton of them for World Congress votes. You get free resources/culture/science/unit production as well.

I keep hearing this argument, and as a wide player, I think this is a bad way to look at it. Tall shouldn't be sitting on your ass minmaxing your 4 cities, tall should be about spreading faith/influnce/culture/whathaveyou from those 4 tall cities to dominate the mapmodes that aren't land. This makes for higher replayability, more diverse gameplay, and generally an all round better experience. How can you thing limiting every 4x to ICS all day every day being a good thing, I don't know.

Its like the game even knows coast tiles are shitty they never seem to expand on them naturally.

Maybe they should add things like a Marina improvement that adds food or gold and gets better with specific harbor buildings. Also feels like it was a mistake to make crabs a bonus improvement instead of luxury.

Maybe something like sea world that you can build if its adjacent to a entertainment district or a fish/whales tile.

That being said ive had fun this map because coastal raider on island maps is fun. Just toss on the pillage bonuses when i go to war and have your fill of all the stuff on the shore.

religion takes forever to win on deity unless you get lucky with no religious focus civs in the game or play on small maps, you could probably cheese it with settling cities then gifting it to the AI

science isn't slow at all with well placed industiral districts and the space race engineer/scientists. my first deity science was faster than my first deity culture because one AI had huge culture defences from destroying a nearby civ

You can, in theory, ask that civ to stop trying to convert you, but that doesn't do a whole lot.

Inquisitors are a religious unit that can only be purchased with faith, and only if you have a religion.

If you're just trying to fight off his religion and don't care about yours, military units work fine. If you're trying to maintain a good relationship with the AI, then you don't really have an option.

Maybe it's my shit taste, but after playing Civ: Beyond Earth with the Echoes of Old Earth mod, I can't seem to get myself to play CIV6. The beginning of the game just feels so...bland. Does it get better when I can puzzle districts together? Because I'm enjoying matching my builds to my terrain.
