It is the best designed in how his stack mechanic works.
A WAR can use defensive cooldowns offensively (and vice versa in the case of berserk) to get off more fell cleaves for damage or inner beat for 20% mitigation on a skill that isn't even a CD.
Not only can they seamlessly switch between their stances, but the stances also change many of their abilities.
Yeah, WAR was horribly designed in 2.0 and it was still pretty awkward throughout 2.X, but won out hard in design in 3.0.

It only has the highest DPS when it doesn't have to do any serious mitigation, and when it's actively mitigating damage, it has the worst tank DPS in the game.
Dark Knight, and even Paladin (in a physical fight), are able to strike a much better balance of offense and defense, and are able to more smoothly adjust by losing a small amount of mitigation to gain a small amount of damage or vice versa, because their offense and defense don't utterly cannibalize each other the way that Warrior does.
If you take Eye and Path out of the equation, Warrior becomes the short bus tank, which is either your worst DPS who can take one hit every couple of minutes, and does slightly more damage than your DRK MT who is also doing something useful by actually tanking, or it becomes an admittedly EXTREMELY tanky tank, but at the cost of doing worse damage than a PLD or DRK would be doing at that level of mitigation.

Warriors in Defiance do the lowest tank damage in the game. A Paladin in Shield Oath does about as much damage *without* Storm's Eye as a Warrior in Defiance does while (obviously) applying their own SE.

Well, for what it's worth, SE is completely right about not wanting to have "off-tanks" and "main-tanks" baked into the class design, and everybody who thinks that it's actually a good thing that it works the way it does right now, or wants "another OT tank" is pretty retarded.
The only thing that happens if you subdivide the roles like that is that you create a situation where one of the classes in that subrole is always the dominant one that's seen as mandatory, and the other(s) is a worthless detriment to the game.

Most groups already have the WAR pull because their opener is way more efficient on getting a good lead. But then the PLD tanks the rest of the fight.
PLD MT is really good on fights with consistent physical damage (halone debuff and blocking), and physical tankbusters that come up often enough for sheltron to be very useful. A9S and A10S seem to play to PLD MT strengths very well.
A11S is probably a wash, and A12S is definitely a DRK MT fight.

Both Virus and Eye for an Eye is one press of a button.
Resurrection is always useful in practice fights or if healers die (and if the other healer is too occupied to hard rez if only one died). Your DPS won't go down as much since you have 4 DoTs and a fair amount of your damage comes from your pet.

The point is that Warrior starts off at a (small, unless they're allowed to pad with Berserked Decimates on big AoE packs) advantage in damage, when you're comparing a Warrior that's allowed to focus entirely on damage to a Dark Knight that has to do a significant amount of mitigation while dealing damage, and every time that a Warrior has to step up and add more mitigation than they can get in full-DPS mode, they lose huge chunks of their damage advantage. Their offensive skills and defensive skills cannibalize each other to the point where any Warrior that matches another tank in mitigation will be doing less damage, and any Warrior that beats another tank in damage will have significantly weaker mitigation than the other tanks.
Further, a Dark Knight or Paladin can drop a small amount of damage to gain a small amount of mitigation, or vice versa, and can find the point at which both of those things are pretty much exactly balanced. But a Warrior has to drop a huge amount of damage every time they need to mitigate better, so they have a tendency to always be either overmitigating (and doing a lot less damage than you'd want) or undermitigating (and doing good damage that is often offset by additional healing requirements).
It's a poorly designed class because it's unable to make small adjustments and is entirely reliant on being catered to hard enough that you can get by with the absolute bare minimum amount of mitigation needed, so they can focus entirely on using every skill and every stack for offense.

You realize that going by the number of people listed on the Rankings page is an extremely poor measure of how often WHM is used versus AST on that fight, right?
Because if a main healer clears 10 times on AST, and then does it just once on WHM for fun, that's counted as +1 on both listings.
What you want is the Statistics page, which tells you how many have cleared over the last two weeks. In the first two weeks of the patch, AST clears were only 50-60% the number of WHM clears, because that's when people were playing WHM for comfort's sake. AST is now up to about 90% of the number of WHM clears.
In a month, tops, there are going to be significantly more ASTs clearing on a weekly basis than WHMs.

You know that Diurnal AST in 3.4 is basically identical to Diurnal AST in 3.3, right? Balance going from "a big DPS advantage" to "an even bigger DPS advantage" wouldn't have made a difference, because either way it was still a big DPS advantage.
WHM shit on AST in Midas because WHM's stronger healing was more useful in Midas than extra DPS. No amount of Balance buffs would have changed that.
AST shits on WHM in Creator because the tier is so easy that there isn't much reason to have that extra healing. If Balance were nerfed back down to 3.3 levels, that wouldn't change, because the DPS advantage would still be useful, and the extra healing still wouldn't be.

There's only about 5 types you can do at this point.
The main scenario which would take you to Heavensward.
Optional level 50 dungeons.
Alliance raid which is the Crystal Tower. (Optional. do it if you want to learn more about Nero or the Allagan Empire and if you like FF3)
The raid which is the Binding/Second/Final Coil of Bahamut. (Optional, do it if you want to learn more about Bahamut, Dalamud, where version 1.x left off and where Alisaie have gone to)
Hard and Extreme trials (but there's not much point to run these anymore except for glamour or ponies).

The extra healing is irrelevant and on any WHM+SCH party either you sac the sch and have the whm solo heal or the whm swaps to AST for the card buffs. Can even replace the SCH for a AST and, while not so effective, have the WHM offheal.
But does that make WHM worthless like the original post said? No and isn't the 1st time WHMs have to listen to the bullshit that the job heals too much, the exact same thing happened back on 2.4-2.5 with fcob.

a few pre-HW dungeons tie into HW dungeons and their hardmodes. there's also not much reason to NOT do the pre-HW content, some of it can be pretty fun.
augmented ironworks will also last you until 60, unless you're a tank, in which case you'll want to upgrade your armor at 56, then again at 58.

Lore gear is easy to obtain, if you have expert and 60 roulette unlocked you'll get scriptures to get the Shire gear. If you're caught up on Alexander and onto the new 3.4 content A9-12 you can work on getting i250 gear from there pretty quickly.
