>>
>>158307032
Why would anyone participate in a demo day? There is a reason modern devs don't release demos. Sales are driven by a consumer's vision of what a game will be, not what the game actually is. You should just hype the fuck out of your game. Never let someone play it without paying. It will only shatter their illusions and cause them to go buy something else that they built up in their head.
>>
>>158307330
Thanks

>>158307862
I feel like there's already Box2D editors out there so there's not much point to mine.
I'm not using Box2D because my physics and collisions are basic but Box2D can do so much more. Just googling showed this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqLR4dFn1qE

Also I'm only implementing the features I need which isn't much, selling a level editor program would mean having to do updates and support which I don't want to deal with.
>>
>>158307938
Same, I literally have no game outside the ones I'm making for the halloween jam
>>
>>158308109
The horror genre is trash.

Why buy and play it yourself when you can just watch someone else have over-the-top reactions to it for free?
>>
>>158308324
We don't make games because we're jews here. Fuck off.
>>
>>158308109
>generic horror game with literally nothing new or interesting

Fuck, this is an insult to both AAA and indie games. It's not even a half decent horror game. Calm your shit.
>>
>>158308324
I know, but that's the mindset if you're an AAA dev or fairly decent sized indie studio.

however since agdg is small(less than 100 active people), im sure it's no big deal if some nobodies plays your demo.

its nice to get feedback too.
>>
>>158308109
You have to remember that creating something well made isn't the same as making something interesting. Like I'm a huge horror game fan and that trailer/idea just bored me.

You need a solid idea before you start.
>>
>>158308324
Like the page says, it exists as a way to drive the community to actually make progress. A lot of devs may put off important things like bugs and UI and lose states forever if they don't have anyone else actually playing
>>
>>158308109
This is a great example of why you shouldn't be trying to compete with AAA devs. That just looks like a shittier version of Silent Hill or REmake. I can just play those games if I want.

You have to make things that that AAA people aren't doing.

i think i finally perfected the platform collision. i dropped the whole ceiling collision thing and allow free movement if you're under a floating block, including walking. i think it could make for some interesting design. it also allows me to place stairs really close (which is impractical since you can jump but it could result in something interesting later).

was a bitch to get working completely though (thanks to castlevania's jumping physics) but now i can finally focus on other stuff.

also had the entire zreo wind waker ost on and right when i got it all working the credits theme played. felt good

So Sins uses static icons for its ships but I'm thinking I might use something more like this, scaled up replicas with some sort of fx shader applied - this is a wireframe but it's way too busy, probably need to get like an outline or more holographic type effect instead.

Decent idea?

>>
>>158309874
The reason Sins uses static icons is because you don't want to render 300 3d ships if you don't have to. Sins LOD has ships rendered pretty primitively when you are zoomed that far out.
>>
>>158309874
I guess my main concern would be how well it works when you've got a shitload of tiny ships clustered together. It looks good in your example, but it might not once shit hits the fan.
>>
So, uh, I have a lot of filters with no stubs active so I'm just gonna ask since I can't see.

Is there some kind of episode or something going on? It's really unusual to see so many people being so positive to minor progress along with all the thank yous. Not to put anyone down- but it's a little jarring and I'm skeptical.

That's reasonable but I don't plan to have the same quantity of ships as Sins, more big capital ships with large health bars and lots of armaments rather than lots of tiny ships with small amounts of armaments since it's more 4X focuses than RTS -- but a definite concern.

To be fair, the 'blanks' are just the untexutred models and the weapons with different names but the same weapon type are just recolors meant to represent rare or unique weapons of that type.

I want every weapon to have a few multiple types beyond just sword, axe, spear and blunt with one and two hands. Feels kind of lame to do that.

How hard would it be to write a program that takes the data from Patreon's Patron Manager page (where you can see how much people have pledged and what tier they're at, etc.), and then said program can compare/contrast two months together to see who's switched to a different reward tier, who's new, etc.?

Obviously this would only be for people's Patreons that they allowed access to, I'm not asking for it to get data I shouldn't have access to (would be using it on my own Patreon only), but checking this stuff by hand is taking longer and longer each month, and it's taking away time from actually developing the game; once the new demo comes out, if Patrons spike, it's going to take even longer.

Will pay for creation of said program once it's proven that it works, happy to write out a contract so you'll be assured you get paid. If any of you can do this/are interested in doing so, [email protected] email me there, and thanks in advance :)

I'm making a shoot-em-up in C++, what would be a good way to implement stages (when enemies, powerups and bosses are spawned). I was considering making a Lua interface for that. Is there a better way of doing this?

The data comes out something like this if i copy/paste it directly from the page;

Alex Cooldick [email protected] $10.00 $32.00 2016-05-05 2016-08-01

Johnny Wangerbuster [email protected] $6.00 $96.00 2015-06-16 2016-08-01

Cock McCock
[email protected] $6.00 $53.00

Changed names/emails to protect identities but that's what you get if you copy/paste it. All I really care about is the email and the first amount, as that's what would change between months/to check if the email didn't exist in the previous month.

I'd be willing to pay $500 if you think that's fair, etc.

The way I did spawning in my small shmup was just spawning them at a specific frame.
Use a timer in the update loop and a list of entities that need to be spawned at what time.
>>
>>158316739
One question, how do you get this data exactly.
Are you copying it manually or does patreon have a public API?
>>
>>158316936
That's what I did for my previous game, just a list of objects and wait commands in a plaintext file. I suppose you can't go wrong with that.

The nice thing about a scripting language would be the flexibility though; could for example make branching paths under certain conditions or loops

Daily reminder that working a part time job + dev is better then the alternatives.

>Working Full time = no time for dev
>Not Working = Depression, Anxiety, financial struggles
>Part time = Money to pursue interests, time to improve skills

I work 3 days a week and get a full 4 days off every single work to work on dev. Thanks to my 3 day work benders I have time to think about ideas and reflect instead of just stewing inside the house every single day like a NEET.

Part time work + dev is best combo. Prove me wrong.

I'm trying to formulate a framework for my first person shooter and am starting to create a weapon, specifically a rocket launcher, to eventually test with the player. However, I need the rocket launcher to NOT be a chid of the player prefab I made, since I want to interchange weapons as I make them.
However, I need the rocket launcher to turn with the camera attached to the player so they can "aim" the launcher with their view. I was thinking about using some rotation quaternions of the character and the camera (this is how I got a first person view in the first place), but I realized the equations used "localRotation", so they are dependent on a parent. The launcher isn't a child of the character like the camera is, so I can't use localRotation I think.
Can anyone help me with this?

Fug. I am new to game dev and I don't know where to start. I want to make 2d games and I have Gamemaker professional edition.

My problems are:
1. I do not know the basics of coding or the GML's library. So I feel very limited.

2. If Gamemaker is something I should be using.
>>
>>158336873
Gamemaker is fine, plenty of great games have come from it. It's really only good for 2D though.

Just starting out can be daunting. You're not going to be able to make your dream game yet. Don't think too much about that yet. Just look up a bunch of tutorials and follow them. Keep doing that until you can get good at making some basic games like pong.
>>
>>158336873
Read the GM documentation like it's a book. Any time you want to do anything, use the search function and read the articles that come up, and the articles that are parents of those articles, and any child articles. If you're too timid to attempt anything on your own then here's a tutorial that I recommend every few days it feels like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DN6dZWXUEzA&list=PLUtKzyIe0aB2HjpmBhnsHpK7ig0z7ohWw
That dude made gunpoint.

Question 2 is gonna get memed hard but you can make plenty of good shit in GM if you're doing 2D.
>>
>>158336873
If you've never done any programming, definitely stick with gamemaker to start. Someone here can hook you up with a good tutorial series.
>>
>>158336873
also, plugging whatever problem you happen to encounter or thing you want to do into google followed by "site:forum.yoyogames.com" should become second nature to you

Don't feel bad for being an example baby at first. Just don't ever implement code until you understand it. Download examples, read tutorials, but don't follow them rote. Don't put them in until you understand them, and by that process you'll begin to learn.
>>
>>158336873
also also learn GML as soon as you can, 'cause drag and drop will only get you so far
>>

Yep! Though because I skipped a step, it only uses blue and red to decide what is wet and what isn't.

If I wanted it to seep through the lower bits of grout first before covering the top parts of the tiles, I'd need to add another height map to my LERPs or use my tessellation height map again. It'd be another one of those extra bits that would add a lot to the material.

Nice. You could add something to help the player keep track of/find themselves in the level if they get disoriented when spinning it around. Maybe a hotkey to find themselves, and/or if they haven't moved in a while. Something like a circle on the UI and an edge highlight around the player model?

interesting bug

when you look downhill you are propelled upward and vice versa, so you can basically control all of your vertical movement

By the way I need help with collision

Basically the principle is if you press "forward" you should be moving along the slope directly in front of you in a manner corresponding to the slope (obviously). I've found that slope but the tricky part is making sure that you don't go straight through the slope or float in the air as I am demonstrating

I also added labels so you know what to equip where. Icons are too much work.

Alright, I have learned that in order to actually make games I need to start off simple.

Probably about 150 lines of dialogue. And it pulls in about 2k a month. Why am I not pandering to the internet's fetishes, so I can afford the time to make the game I really want.

A game that has a dialogue system like old text adventure games where you can type what you want to figure shit out, that open a prompt every time you talk to an NPC.

Actually Fallout 1 had a half-assed version of this (in addition to its normal dialogue) and it was fucking terrible, I wonder why they even included it in the game. There were only a few keywords that even worked, with only a few NPCs. But now that I think about it could be a good system if actually done right. Maybe I should do this for my RPG.

First off you need a very basic system of having a character walk around. Build a big room for testing and debugging purposes, put objects and npcs in the room. Basically, you should be able to make a shitty watered down version of your game using that one room.

Later on you can make a more in depth game, but for now you have just one dude who wants pancakes, sitting at a table next to a stack of pancakes. A single Boolean value about whether or not he's hungry, and whether or not you are currently holding the pancakes. Feed him, you win!
After that, do a version where you need to make the pancakes. Then do a version where there are two dudes to feed. Finally, make two rooms and be able to go back and forth between them to feed the dudes. Now just make a good game.

Flags flag = Flag2 & Flag4;

But that doesn't make sense either.
In order to be a yesdev, you don't need skills.
You just need to put forth effort and diligence. You can be the worst developer in the world, but as long as you're making a genuine effort to create something, you're a yesdev.

Game jams are actually pretty great. At least the ones where you go to a place and do things face to face with other people.

It really teaches you how to compromise, work fast and keep your scope small. All very important skills in the indie world. Also it's great to see the first day concept and the (hopefully) finished project 2 days later.

This being said I've no experience of longer jams or aggydaggy jams.

>click NPC

>prompt
>input "store"
>"If you're looking for gear there's a corner store up the road east."

you could do this for all interactions, asking around about parts of the story to progress. if you input something the NPC doesn't understand, they have various lines like "Come again?" or "Don't now anything about that." and so on

I'm trying to figure out 3D collision detection myself also, and as I see it's not an easy to answer question.

As I understand it helps if you use height maps, because if you know where you are on the map, you should also know which slope you are standing on, thus you can calculate the proper vector of your movement.

Another method I see often mentioned is using binary trees for maps, but I haven't digged enough to understand what it's truly about.

Now I need to make some demo scenes

I'm going to have a keyboard where there's blocks that go up and down for A-Z when you press or release them as well as post a message in a text element.
Also some events that happen when you type keys in a certain order, like do A->B->C->D will cause particle explosion.
That way people can see how easy it is to setup events and callbacks, and I can post the source code for the setup.

Once I have that all done, I'll move back onto my main project which is my VR Package.

I only know a trick in blender that can be used for tracks (also hair). Build the track in segments so it's easier.

Drop a few nurbspaths onto a stage mesh, following slopes, etc as closely as you can.

Take a flat plane and stretch it, loop cut it evenly several times, and add the curve modifier to it.

In the blank box, select the curve you want to snap to, drag the mesh near it and adjust until your road/path is in place and clean.

Apply the modifier and manually adjust parts that didn't line up correctly.

If you want, join the track segments and merge/weld the vertices.

It's well designed and appeals to a certain market. You need to adjust your attitude.

Today's design work, while I hack away at the gameplay. All TBC icons will be replaced by portraits when I get the artist around to doing it.

Command Items are akin to amulets, rings, trinkets, etc. found in Fantasy RPGs. Morale can be thought of as Stamina, at 100% morale the ship operates at 200%. As it drops the ship becomes less efficient, this effects all stats including accuracy, damage, regeneration and so on. So Command items become critical to surviving long engagements.

Command items can level up as you gain experience. This way players can hold onto, or upgrade very low level items.

So good point from my wife: If gamemaker is so good for 2D how come it is bad for 3D?

Thank you for this. You're a proof to all these nay sayers that you can make great progress and game functionality without having assets.

It's not.

I can see why one would do it now, though I, myself, don't agree it should be done.

why should I use that list? What most of those aren't interested in the type of game I'm developing?

I argue you should build a contact list based on what you're developing.

you maintain the same number of contacts. You just increase the chances of having the contact actually interested in your product. So you'll probably get MORE coverage. And better coverage, at that.
>>
>>158367080
you arent going to get any coverage from a list full of dead accounts and key resellers and people who literally play NOTHING but minecraft and wonder why they fuck people keep sending them keys for shit.
>>
>>158366848
I THINK you can make some very simple looking 3D in GM (PS1 era), but that's the extent, it needs a strong artstyle to cover up the poor 3D.

The games industry had already mastered 2D in the SNES/GBA era. Then early PS1/N64 3D came out.
You can consider GM having the same power from that era.
GM = SNES and early shit 3D, exactly like the games industry from back then.

People expect a lot more from 3D these days.

with that green block in the centre, it's not a solid block of green, it has inconsistently varying shades of green.
I'm curious as to how you achieved this effect.

Alright agdg I need some art help.

Blocky Cube tree's or normal Regular trees?
>>
>>158368526
regular
>>
>>158368526
if you at some point have themed levels, maybe you could use one type in one level theme, and the other one in different levels.

But in general, I prefer the blocky trees.
>>
>>158368526
I thought we had been over this? Regular
>>
>>158368526
Both.
>>
>>158368526
I feel like you are being unfair, the regular tree obviously was worked harder than the blocky one, specially in the texture department.
>>
>>158368526
You are going to get patent trolled.
>>
>>158368695
I think it's actually the opposite. Blocky tree has worked textures. The leaves in the regular tree are simply green.

thats a bush block with this texture on it. Basically bigger tiles/blocks meant to block the players view on things to get them to rotate the camera.

are the light spots jotted around the block part of the texture?
