Playing Sonic Utopia now and it really feels like a nice and comfy 3D Sonic game. I hope Sega hires these guys to do a full game like this.

Colors I remember just playing like another Rush game, but with no Blaze. Also, there were more friends in the story which was neat, I guess.

Generations just felt like a big missed opportunity, very little representation of any of the previous Sonic handheld titles. Only one level and it's from Rush.

Also, they give Classic a homing attack, which I think just kinda makes it all pointless.

They're fine if you want Sonic on the go. You wouldn't really miss out by not playing them, though.

Okay, so you need to understand a quick bit of history to answer this fully. Although Rush Adventure was overall better than Rush as a game, it was disappointing from a sales perspective. Why? Because some dumbass Sega executive decided it should be released only a couple weeks before Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. But of course Sega blamed Dimps anyway. Later Dimps games had their budget reduced, deadlines were more condensed, and they were mandated to be handheld versions of main console games instead of original games.

So when Colors DS came out, it was basically Rush 3 with Wisps. The condensed deadlines and budget meant that Dimps basically just reused the same engine they had before, added Wisps, changed the level design and called it a day. This was actually perfectly fine and Colors DS is pretty good. With Generations they had to port the game engine from the DS to 3DS, change the graphics to be fully 3D instead of 3D models on 2D sprite graphics, and add classic Sonic gameplay. So it turned out pretty mediocre. It's still playable and you can have a bit of quick fun with it, but it's definitely not writing home about.

People like to blame Dimps for the quality of their other titles like Sonic 4 and the 3DS games, but almost every issue can be traced back to Sega just not giving them the time and budget they need.

I have a challenge for any Sonic Utopia players
I've scoured pretty much the entire level by now. I've found the crystal cave, semi-hidden mid-point cave, and the ruins on the upper area.
What I have are 2 images of locations which for the life of me I cannot determine how to get to.
This first one is above the upper area where the ruins are located. If you cross the wooden bridge on the far right you should see an island just out of reach with a bumper that sends you back to the bridge, yet no way to get to it. Above that island on the cliff are a few rings that render in just as you get near enough. I've provided a picture with this post, and the next location will be coming in the next post.

The next location is a bit trickier to discover, and I'm uncertain if it's actually reachable without some sort of noclip hack.
To reach this area you must go to the platform that you land on when taking the spring up to this upper area. Turn back towards the spring and spindash or boost off it onto the rocks on the other side. Jump around this rock to the right to get on the rocks that make up the outer wall and start making your way up, hanging left as much as possible. You will eventually bump up against an invisible wall, but there will be a very small spot towards the bush that you can stand on. jump up from there and around the bush and continue your way up and to the left. Before reaching the waterfall, if you have decent height you should reach a clearing in the rocks that very prominently displays this view. Below you can see clearly intentionally modeled area which contains a few rings. Towards the cliff you are standing on there appears to be a path leading underground. I've trekked my way all the way to the other side of the level in line with this path but as of yet have not found an entrance, nor have I found an entrance along the rock wall. I suspect this location and the one from the previous post may be connected, though I currently can't confirm.
I will be heading to bed after this post, but I would be curious to see if anyone is able to reach these areas by the time I return. If needed I'll try to provide a video or webm of how to reach this vantage point tomorrow.

Multiple characters was inevitable. Tails came into existence because they wanted to have a 2-Player mode, so the second Sonic that would be the second playable character became Tails.

An 'open world' Sonic game doesn't work without the open world being filled with extra activities.

If this was a proper game, they could put in hidden collectables, have NPCs like Knuckles or Shadow hanging around in parts of the stage waiting for a race or a quest, Eggman might have a base that you need to eliminate from the map, etc

these fan games are definetely heading in the right direction with the open levels and non-scripted movement. the problem is that they still haven't figured out how to make a movement system that's responsive while still having lots of momentum. it's clearly a difficult problem to solve. make it too momentum based and it's difficult to turn at high speeds, make it too much about player input and it will feel twitchy and you lose the sense of momentum. they have the right idea but the movement still feels a bit off in the current fan games but i'm sure it will get better

it's funny how we are now discussing the future of fan games with far more hope and enthusiasm than the official games
