If you want to do well in literally any civ game
>build tall
>pick a science faction

Honestly my biggest issue with V was how poorly science is handled. It trumps absolutely everything and getting the science wonders puts you on a snowball that literally nothing can stop.

This is why I'm so happy about the new civics tree

Pure science civs are going to miss out on governments and policies.
>>
>Got Science Victory just 3 turns before Washington was able to get Cultural Victory
I forgot how tense the endgame could be when you play peacefully.
>>
>>157858870

modern, arguably industrial

I like a neat medieval backstab though for a quick capital grab to leapfrog you into a huge lead if next to someone relatively peaceful

civ 5 is so fucking boring because the optimal strategy is to sit and wait through 70% of the game, or 100% depending on what victory you are aiming for
>>
>>157859561
Whether that actually matters or not is another question though. I hope it does, but I have a nagging feeling science will still be broken.

Like it is in all 4X games
>>
>>157859561
From what I saw, policies are rarely worth it. Maybe 1 in 10 policies are actually worth rushing to.

>>157860189

a rush without catapults is not viable imo

even on prince it just cripples you too much, and it's even worse on higher difficulties. You need catapults to flatten a city in 3-4 turns, preferably a nice big one or a capital and you then take your gainz and transition quickly to outpace other civs peacefully

going warlike is simply not viable and is just a stepping stone to peace harder via more science gains or a big hammer city

catapults suck. Too fragile to do anything of note.

I think england is one of the civs that can wage war pretty early due to longbows. And of course the good old hun rush with battering rams. Most other civs cripple themselves too hard due to the amount of units they need and the losses they take because cities are just so stupidly strong on their own.

So, i'm trying to git gud at civ, but I have trouble with the early game on prince

Usually, by the mid game, i've more or less become a runaway civ, but up untill then I always struggle

I always lose warriors to barbarians or waste a ton of turns taking out camps with them even with the honor opener, whichI feel I shouldn't be, and I have trouble figuring out what techs to prioritize

Advice?

ignore barb camps until you get archers. Just let them come to your city and take some pot shots with it and get easy experience. You dont have to clear barb camps, it just spawns a new one somewhere else. Only clear them when you have a quest for it or really need it gone for a city.

Cultist is the Venice of EL. Except that it also gets an ability to convert minor faction villages permanently to your cause: they shit endless waves of low tier troops you can send off to die or sell into slavery for mad dosh.

Morgawr can straight up mind control minor faction armies.

I think it would be a great fit for a faction supposed to start a worldwide revolution.
>>
>>157863210

>AI
>Conquest only

Yeah, right
>>
>>157863005
There is a thing in EL called minor factions, think of them as barbarians + City States. They are a threat to your empire unless you pacified them, then they become part of your empire and can even be assimilated for bonuses and the right to use their units.

Cultists can convert their villages to make them small parts of their empire, spouting endless units for free.

Morgraw can make pacified villages dissent, rendering them hostiles and can take control of hostile minor factions armies to act like mercenaries
>>

>1) I never know what's good to research and with the way the research is structured it's way too confusing and there is no clear paths for what's going on in your empire
Most tech eras you can only pick ~5 techs, because there is a number of mandatory ones, just play slowly and carefuly read trough each thech.
>2) I'm either out of gold or have no units to defend myself
Economy&Pop empire plan exists to print money. Try it.
>3) I either have population to build things or I have lots of worthless cities
Lot's of "worthless" cities with is the way to go for most everyone. If you settle well, such is on a river near an anomaly or two, your city gives you ~30 Fidsy a pop unit gives you 4, do the math.
>4) there's no instant movement option / ai gets to move at the beginning of your turn and attack you before you can run
There is. Arrow button in bottom right of the screen. It is also triggered when you hit enter first time on your turn, or you can bind the arrow itself to a key in menu, called "confirm orders" or something along those lines.

I haven't been using guides, so I can't point you to one, and writing one is not something I'm interested in in any way. Keep in mind that I'm not a vet, but here are some pointers for "standard" factions early game:

1)Settle for production > fidsy>the rest Target rivers and anomalies.
2)Early techs are good when playing wide, I like production and approval buildings, but they are not end all be all. Experiment.
3)First era is about running around like mad and grabbing as many Ruins/Camps/Quests. Split your initial army in 3 parts, and start exploring before you settle.
4)Use minors to compensate for you, assimilate unit types you don't have, combined arms is the way to go.

Damn Civ 6 looks horrible visually. It's like old video games when you turned all textures to minimum. Civ 5 biomes actually felt "immersive" for a game like this. Honestly the biggest thing I dislike with the game right now is how fast it looks. Half the civs in the modern era in the 1700's? It's not ignoring the game theory, it's adding adding another variable to changing the weighting.

Players whining about the AI ganging up on them is an issue with how aggressive the AI is. The AI ganging up on someone and failing to actually do anything just makes it look retarded.

Penalties for not taking military action would also apply to players and AIs fighting alongside the player - it'd making committing in general stronger and is in line with similar diplomatic penalties for ignoring treaties.

They can just change the balance to w/e the hell they want, literally. Letting AI to cooperate well, results in blobs that cut other blobs apart and then turn on each other. You don't want that every game. Adding variables, doesn't solve the core issue of determining what balance between the two would be the best.

You aren't getting the point. They can make AI trust each other at a drop of a hat, it will make them cooperate like bestest buds holding nothing back, but that ignores the game theory.and will inevitably result in both boring games and whiny players. The opposite of AI never attacking is just as bad. The problem is choosing a good spot between the two.

You dial it down, and noone in the office cares if it results in a weak joint wars by AI cares, except the AI team itself.

A grand strat game is something where you spend 10 hours just planning to take one bit of land through a bunch of strategic marriages, murders and warfare only to have it all fail because the new pope who is a horse orders you onto a crusade.

Civ doesnt even get close to that.
>>
>>157875526

Making the AI unable to handle a scenario as a balance fix is really poor.

I said game dev. You clearly don't know jack shit about search trees, turn look-ahead, unit pathing, and everything else combined that it takes to run a strategy game.

And do that once per AI, let's take 6 for an average game, for however many units they have, in an intelligent manner. And do that ad nauseum every single turn running all of those routines in a timely manner (let's say less than 3 seconds per AI, otherwise you're making the player wait a half minute between each turn).

No, your silly 1 Ghz quad core isn't going to manage that while simultaneously rendering the map and interface.

>>
>>157880992

>>157880830
The silver lining for me is showing just what their weaknesses are so that hopefully it will at least be easy to make tweaks in the areas they lack in.

They were doing fine at teching, their improvement and district placement was mostly alright - farms with stacking adjacency bonuses and campuses by mountains and rainforest- and they can put up at least some of a fight on the non-combat fronts. Probably need some tweaking to get them to commit to stuff like the Mars Mission, though, or better prioritizing repairs.

The big stoppers on the battlefront is that they aren't aggressive in improving, trying to get resources they need for improvement, and hey have a lot of fear of getting any warmonger penalties even with casus belli.
>>
>>157881491
It's just the same shit that we had in Civ V (later expansions) and Beyond Earth. People wanted improvements, but there aren't any.

>>
>>157880226
I assume they got lucky, since they claimed that Aztecs rarely won. I bet they got a lot of those from being able to freely bully Russia and some neighbor city states, while still somehow getting really well along with Brazil.

Probably really strong in the hands of a smart player who knows how to wage the right kind of wars, while AI needs to get lucky for that to happen.
>>
>>157881491
Good thing you'll be able to enjoy Civ VI on your tablet with full cash shop integration!
>>
>>157882547
I found it odder they were claiming the Aztecs didn't really have anything to help much in the late game, because the +X combat strength for luxuries is always relevant when going up against contemporary opponents due to the new combat formula, amenities going towards 6 cities instead of 4 means that they only need 2 copies to everyone else's 3 to cover 12 cities, and rushing districts with workers can remain relevant even up to setting up the Spaceport(s).

About the only thing the Aztecs have that SHOULD only be relevant in the early game is their unique Warrior.
>>
>>157880626
Apparently there's a big community around arranging those kinda matches with Civ5 on reddit, so the devs wanted to try doing an official match, since they already have their own build for pitting the AI against each other for testing purposes.

I think the concept is cool, just spectating a big FFA war between world powers, but jesus christ it got boring after the initial rush of land grabbing and early wars. I'd say the biggest flaw is that you can't really see the civs fighting over the peaceful victory conditions when you're spectating. Only way you could make it exciting would be to turn aggression up and make domination the only victory type, since then you'd actually see who's winning.
>>
>>157883045
The devs don't know their own game
>>
>>157883045
Pete is a fucking moron.

Although I don't think the AI rushed many space ports, given how many builders they had sitting around.
>>
>>157883062
That's what they do for the Battle Royales on Reddit 99% of the time, otherwise half the AIs just turtle. Even then you get all the fun of watching a mega-fleet of aircraft carriers get nuked and replaced with a new one.
>>
>>157883062
AI games can be fun.

There's a turn based game where you design your own armies, so I asked a bunch of internet acquaintances to pick army units that may exist in a medieval fantasy setting and then they I streamed their armies fight under the AIs command.

Was interesting to see what the different people thought of.
Like a few people asked for Catapults, but the /k/ommande specifically asked for Siege Engines and there's a unit called exactly that.
Otherwise when they were close and asked for Crossbows, I asked follow up questions like "Gnoll Crossbows or Dwarf Crossbows?".

One of the top 2 tiles with +2 food.
Later on you'll probably wanna demolish it, and build the planetary administration onthe 1 food volcano.

One thing I hate about EL is that you seem to speed tech right to the late-mid endgame

I wish the tech trees were 3~ times as big and you had to spend a lot longer in them so you'd have more of a chance to do things like explore and fight wars without just turtling in one or two cities while you techspam and build triangle cities to the end game because that's "optimal"
>>
>>157889056
It's not optimal to techspam and build trianglecities unless nobody is going to fuck with you.

Retrofitting is fucking expensive and unless you already have an army, you'll just get rolled once someone realizes that you're trying to zoom to space.
>>
>>157888917
>Don't you want to land where the adjacency effect would enhance stuff?
Nope.
The ship doesn't have an adjacency bonus.
You want to land on the tile with the highest food.

Once you reach 5 pop you can have the volcano cleared, and you can demolish the ship.
Then place the Planteray Adminstration(which has an adjacency bonus) on the tile the volcano was located.
>>
>>157889169
Just make sure you have high production or dust
Just keep selling your units and build new sets of 8 every turn by dust-buying

late game you'll have assloads of dust and production per turn so it's easy. Just shit out a 30 unit perfect army in one turn when they get close with their shitter army of lower tech
>>
>>157889056
Just put it on lower speed. Adding more techs would simply be bloat.
>>
>>157888279
>>157889243
Forgot colony ship doesn't have adjacency bonus. I change my answer to one of the top two food tiles and then move on to volcanic tile when you can upgrade and remove volcano. However, if you haven't got the tech to remove volcano then 2nd best option is the left most star position I think. Unlikely you won't get the tech to remove volcano after colonising but I've had games where it took AGES to get various 'remove tile obstruction' techs

Seeing as we don't have any idea of the size of these planets I'd take Nusakan, build outpost of Tissilum until you can colonise a world near it (hopefully) and maybe push their borders back over time to claim Aesir if it's good planet.

>>157892580
Japris looks good. I hate that there's no place to put your colony without a research icon adjacent to it in all those 25 tiles. 2 food tile is best to start but move it later.

No obvious spot.
If it was later in the game I'd make it a research planet and would only use 3 of the adjacency effects.
I don't know what full yield is hiding under your ship atm.

When I was playing I was using a chart to determine how much food I needed to feed a Size X planet to make it easier.

I might place the administration on purple and then go with 2 farms, rest labs.
Not sure.

I'd rather the AI cheat than fall behind in military the way it does. Using starter units in the info era is inexcusable. If unit upgrade cost is the issue, just make units free to upgrade for the AI. If the AI can't upgrade units because it doesn't have the strategic resources for it, just make the AI spawn near them, make them more common, and make the AI prioritize settling them.

I really hope it doesn't end up like Beyond Earth with how easy it is to out-gun the AI and steamroll them, because that just isn't very fun after doing it once or twice and shouldn't be possible on the mid/high-level difficulties unless you get stupidly lucky with a start.

Except the AI wouldn't do that because how much they prioritize military is decided on a civ-by-civ basis, assuming it works similarly to how it did in other games. Besides, the AI would still need to produce buildings, improvements, and districts, which is another thing the AI neglected in the stream. They wouldn't magically get a 30-unit-strong military out of nowhere.

In Civ 5 the AI was able to maintain their military at their appropriate tech level with no problem. It worked fine in 5, so it shouldn't be an issue in 6.
>>

The highest AI we have seen is King. On Immortal/Diety the AI will cheat enough that all the stupid shit you saw in the battle royale will not be as big of an issue.

If you are a hardcore civ player I would hold off on buying the game until you feel like they have done enough to boost the AI so you will have a more competitive game than playing a modded Civ V.

>>157902972
>it's that it's more or less the same as it was in Civ 5
The AI in Civ 5 didn't keep warriors around until the information era. The only real improvement I remember them mentioning specifically is the reduced waiting period between turns, but that also has to do with how much of a toaster you'll be playing the game on.

>The AI in Civ 5 didn't keep warriors around until the information era.

True, that's a pretty glaring issue. It might have to do with upgrade values being insanely high, or perhaps the time between eras being shorter. Hard to say how it will affect how to AI plays though. I mean, they still recruit higher era units as normal, but having an army of warriors might fool the AI into thinking he's got his defense covered even when his neighbor has modern armor at the border.

You can do a lot wit warriors and archers. Make 3-5 warriors and 4-10 archers and go all in on your closest neighbour. When you are fighting play safe with the ranged units. These are your siege units. Forget anything before cannons. Ranged units are so good early game. Domination is very viable. On my current game I have wiped out 2civs before xbowmen. No siege units. Marathon's the best for domination, hands down. Anything below epic is just too fast imo, and while technically having more techs than Civ 5, the tech tree of Civ 6 is fairly small, so with marathon you'd see more use of all era specific units.
>>
>>157911750
I watched many pre-release build games and the eras after medieval just change every couple of turns on Standard. I can't imagine playing on slower speed than Epic.

Eureka boosts should be cut in half.

The only way to avoid the warmonger penalty is to be friends with the other civs, and an easy way to become friends is to denounce their enemies.

When there is a pariah state (like Mongols in a super City State-friendly game) it's usually super easy to have common ground with everyone else.
The AI really hates it when you declare war for no reason though, and almost everyone is going to hate you for dealing the final blow and killing the last city.
