I had a ton of games in my steam library from Humble Bundle purchases but a shitty laptop, so maybe only 5% of it could run.
Then I made a big gaming pc and it all runs well. But I don't feel pulled into playing any of them. It's not that they're bad or anything, and it's not that I'm trying to decide between each game, it literally is just that cable tv feeling of "nothing to watch". I feel so disgusted with myself for it but I can't help it. I've had this PC for about a year now and I've only beaten like 3 of the 200 installed (I have multiple 2TB HDDs).

The game itself is solid enough, but has issues with playstyle diversity given the fact that there's little reason to do anything but combos into resets, as opposed to letting certain archetypes thrive in their own way more (See: grapplers especially) Also, character variety for a team based fighter was sorely lacking until well into the game's life, which is an issue as well. I'd want it to be developed by Bandai Namco in a similar vein to Poken. I would want it to combine elments from Sonic the Fighters and Sonic Battle. Probably give characters different strings and combos depending on the buttons you press and in what order. Give characters a few special moves and such. But also have fast paced elements like bouncing off of walls from battle and powerful smash attacks that knock opponents across the screen. Make the game feel very dynamic and quick without feeling tedious and slow.

Really, the traditional fighting game setup is a poor choice for this franchise, since that's not the kind of action that it usually has. This is going to sound weird as hell, but think about this, a Sonic fighting game would work if it was like Dissidia. Third-person, free range combat would actually fit a lot better for Sonic fighting game.

I mean, the Marvel roots were obvious, and it was practically billed as MvC2 and CvS2 having a baby back when it was first being released. I will say that I'm impressed with the way that the community around the game has brought it back from the brink of death, but there's just a spark that it feels like it's missing compared to MvC and TvC that I've never really been able to put a finger on, and I think that playstyle diversity is the main culprit, especially when you still have characters like Bella, Beowulf, or Peacock going for resets just as hard as anyone else.

It depends on what you're trying to do with the characters in question. For simplistic, more static characters, like what you'd typically see out of a Street Fighter character or something, then 3D models become a no brainer. Where models fail however, is when you have characters that shift or morph in various ways, or summon a lot of extra on-screen resources, like assists and the like. This is the main reason why Darkstalkers in 3D would basically never work, but the ponit is that sprites still have their place, and the Sonic community in particular is no stranger whatsoever to spriting, which is what would make me think that a fanmade fighter would end up being sprite based.

Except modeling a 3D model for small shit and warping the model for animations is still easier in 3D. The only thing that could take longer is if they had to create an entire character on par in quality with the fighter for an assist move that wasn't already in the game.

Any coder/designer with balls would drive an artist creating sprites mad making changes over and over until it's as perfect and balanced as possible. I also don't think any fan is willing to put in the time to create fluent 60 FPS sprites for 8+ characters nor do I think that the project would finish even if they were.
