It's not that redundant.
Take the Nord troops for instance... two-hand axe users, 1-hand axe users, axe throwers, bows, sword/board users, etc. There's a lot of tangible variety there, and a few extras that are somewhat redundant (such as varying the speed of the weapons between two classes with either an axe or a sword). But it's just fun at that point.

the best ways currently are just workarounds (ie in 1257 spearmen can use spears and sidearms because scripts make them always spawn with a spear and spear breaking means they have to swap to the sidearm, but can't swap till the spear breaks, similar thing in VC) or just giving troops one type of melee weapon only

As far as I can remember, this just lets me divide unit types into different groups, and has better formations. It still doesn't let you make good multi-type formations where the positioning of different kinds of units matters.
For example, I can make two groups of guys with polearms mixed with guys with swords, but I can't make it put them into alternating ranks.

what you can do though is change an archer unit to infantry so they'll be included in these formations, in 1257 i mixed pirates (who always spawn with crossbows but are flagged as infantry by default) in my infantry to great effect, because the pirates could pelt the enemy with bolts while behind the shieldwall up front

That's actually exactly the idea I was toying with; been leaning toward aggregating undeads but I considered sacrificing prisoners too. I would like to do it but it's a bit of a pain in the ass figuring out how to implement it. I'm very much open for suggestions on that.

Just fight looters. Not a lot to memorize though. The basic commands are just F1 + F1 to stop your troops from charging in right away. F1 + F2 if you want them to follow you, which is what I usually do in order to seize a nearby hilltop. Simple matter to remember the basic unit group keys.

Like the charge and follow fag said, fighting low lvl looters is a good option. You could also just do a custom battle from the main menu, and train that way. Or if you don't need troops and just want to memorize the stuff, go to a training field or city and just do the commands without troops.

Setting up and maintaining a spear division is too much of a bother. By late game I'm just recruiting entire armies out of 70+ relation villages and depositing them in my newly conquered castles I rarely have a permanent fighting force on hand. I actually store most of my valuable units in my main fiefs and only bother to collect them if I'm planning on fighting large armies. My optimal army that travels with me is only about 40-60 strong at a time and is mostly cavalry.

I find horses make excellent shields to cavalry charges. And remember I do keep 4 or 5 divisions, even when my army is mostly cav I actually had at least 2 cavalry divisions. One is my screeners who stay out in front and the other is my personal retinue. who join me on strategic charges. I rarely end up in danger from enemy heavy cavarlry cause they seem drawn to swadian knights like flies.

Yeah Rhodoks are really only good for their crossbowmen. Their sergeants are decently strong but you gotta keep those veteran spearmen alive to get access to them. I find hiring lots of mercenaries to fill out your infantry line helps.

What is the best way to level up troops?

If a relation with a village is high enough, do they actually give you high tier troops, or just a huge amount of recruits?

I really regret not putting points into CHA and leadership earlier, since now the Kings have at least 400 troops each, while I can barely field 100(at about level 27). My companions are about level 20 each, but it's becoming increasingly hard to level them up

Ive been able to garrison hundreds of decent Rh*dok crossbowmen in my towns, but trying to get Huscarls is a pain in the arse

Anybody got any creative ideas for this guy? All of the horseman are getting special effects; death insta-kills everyone, war turns enemies against their allies. I'm not sure where to go with Famine. Only idea I got was having him consume the enemies he kills to grow increasingly stronger until he has absurd stats.

Mass infantry; even in Native without polearm mods, is actually the best way to take down mass melee cavalry on the field. The real problem is that Native never really gives you incentive to hard counter like this.

That said for a "balanced" Rhodok force you are likely going to always favor crossbowmen. They are just more versatile and are the core of your army.

CHA is the most valuable stat you have. Leadership is the most useful skill in the entire game. This one skill gives you access to larger armies and also reduces upkeep costs. For late game there is no better skill to have maxed.

Surgery 10+(4) disagrees. High renown and good garrison usage minimizes economic disadvantage if you even need the money due to good economics.

Warrior builds allow you to apply your avatar in tactically creative ways and are fun. One thing that is also underestimated is that Warrior builds level up the fastest by far and can mix into other attributes and spread trainer to companions/troops sooner.

CHA (really Leadership) is good but it is never needed like many seem to think.

To be honest, I actually thought that this is the reason for Diplomacy. I never bothered reading the actual Diplomacy modpage, since most mods I play incorporate it. But I always thought that the draw was basically constant war, with more gameplay options.

So with Bannerlord on the horizon. What Warband mods will never ever be finished, because its obvious the modders will lose interest once BL launches.

If you play Diplomacy; which most mods have presently, all factions are essentially always going to be at war anyways.

In Native it is not uncommon for factions to go over a month in complete peace.
