Also they've completely restructured the combat, inventory, magic system, dialogue, some scenes, re-rendered all the background art, pretty much the whole game to streamline it and make it a more pleasant experience and to draw it closer in line to Muramasa/Dragon's Crown.

It honestly comes down to personal preference, though. I think the games are more suited to handheld due to the pick up and play nature, but if you want to wait for the ps4 version with all the extra physical bonuses go for it.

I sunk just over 20 hours on Operation Abyss, but then the difficulty seemed to just ramp up like crazy and I ended up dropping it.

I tried again recently using Classic characters and I've gotten about 7 hours in but then remembered that awful Babyl dungeon and am finding it hard to pick up the nerve to keep going.

It's really old school; more accessible than Wizardry but much less so than all of Experience's other games. You might like that kinda thing, but Stranger of Sword City is still my favourite Experience game by far.

If I were you I would just stop buying games I'll never play anyway. Just a waste of space at that point. Put your time towards something you actually enjoy, unless this collecting is that. Op Abyss is harder IMO.
It's a remake and repackage of two older games (2/3rds of a trilogy, the last part part hasn't been announced for the west and is unlikely), and has some crazy difficult dungeon design. It's pretty rewarding, though, and has a really nice horror sci-fi aesthetic.
You can choose from classic or basic to make your characters. Basic has some really nice anime cut-outs you can use, while classic has you building your own "paper-doll" type team which. It can turn out a little generic, but at the same time you can actually see equipment on your characters, so both options have their strengths.

SoSC is more easily accessible due to being newer, though it's still a really tough game (harder than demon gaze, a little easier than Op Abyss). 2 art styles to choose from (fantasy and anime-style fantasy), both of which are amazingly pretty in their own way. Dungeons are interesting and intricate, characters are pretty endearing and the plot is interesting but doesn't really "get in the way", if that makes sense? It's still about your team of awesome adventurers trawling through dungeons and taking on huge bosses.

They both have their own style, their own strengths and weaknesses, and are both tough as nails dungeon crawlers. Get the one that appeals more to you!
