SMN is one of the few I haven't tried yet, is it like MCH in that the main appeal of the job are the occasional spikes in APM and damage while the time in between is fairly uninteresting?

For class, I suggest either Lancer if you are more interested in physical classes, or Thaumaturge if you are more interested in magical classes. Yes, you just have to be in areas where Triple Triad can be played (there will be a message in the chat log stating when you enter a zone or specific area.) All of Gold Saucer+Battle Hall have player battles, then select areas in cities like The Quicksands allow you to duel. You can also duel inside houses/apartments/private chambers where a Triple Triad board furniture piece has been placed.

To challenge someone, just right click / bring up player options while targeting them and "Challenge to a Normal Match" should be listed. You can even customize what rules (or lack thereof) you want.
