So I play tanky supports often enough. I don't really roam, though, I often just ward jungle and stick on lanes that are being rotated on.

Should I be roaming for ganks with the jungler past level 6? Is that why I buy mobis? Am I missing a huge part of tank support gameplay?

Naut is pretty sweet, he has all the suff a jungler needs and then some. He has kickass initiation and CC, a shield, root ,aoe slow, knock up, DOT AOE AUTOATTACK+AA RESET. All the good shit. He's fun as well. Also kind of mobile. He is another one to try out if you are good at ganks and want to get good

You only roam if you are sure that your adc can farm safe, otherwise you are just letting him off to die to their botlane. Mobis only if you really plan to roam with like blitz. So, if you lose lane don't roam, but when you are behind you can let your adc freeze at t2 and you have some free time to make stuff happen, at least that's my approach and got me to gold in a week

Who are you playing? You can't do much vs olaf but play safe in lane. By play safe I mean, stand in a place that garuntees if he lands an axe on you he won't be able to run you down. If he kills you once you're done because he can keep the wave frozen at his side so try and keep the wave close to your tower as much as you can and stay in a place that is safe enough so you can always run away from him in lane.

but how exactly are the lanes differing from each other, i watch videos from people who occasionally play league and they often say that x hero NEEDS to be top etc etc.
from my dota experience, all lanes function identically (except if you plan on jungling since the camp layouts differ from both sides)
theres only the mid, which is identical both ways. then theres the "safe lane" and "suicide lane"

if youre playing on radiant, the safe lane is bottom while suicide lane is top. then its reversed if youre on the other team. mid is for the players that need the fastest farming and levelling from solo xp and creeps, safe is for late game carries that need to be babysat because they suck at early game and suicide lane is for heroes that can handle multiple enemies

Roam when: your lane is pushed out and your ad is going back (while you have a good amount of health/mana), your jgl is on your side of the map(jgl invades/deep vision) or able to collapse on mid(if you have the cc to make something happen).
Dont roam when your ad is getting pushed in and in risk of getting killed.
After first back you have the option of going mid, make sure to set up proper vision for your ad tho
Never roam when youre at risk of getting cut off by enemy supp/jgl/mid, depending on how much pressure+vision you have there are certain points you can or can not go to

I played against him in my last two games.

The first game I was Shen. Couldn't do anything so I opted for snowballing bot, which worked. But while I ulted bot, he was able to get my tower. After that, he could pretty much 1v4 my team.

The second game I was Kayle against him and I was able to get first blood on him, but after around 15 minutes he could instakill me while being unkitable.

League has mechanics that enforce a basic state of play.

Top lane generally hosts 'tanky bruisers', because they have longer lanes and need to stay in lane for extended periods of time.

Mid lane is for mages, since it's the short lane. There's no vision gimmick, so people play a lot of safe waveclear champions and farm out to contribute AP damage for teamfights.

Yeah a big problem with Olaf is his teamfighting, like Darius if your team doesn't give him enough respect in teamfights he will stomp in fights. The best thing you can do in that situation is to just hold your carries hands at all times and try to focus the Olaf down while keeping them alive. Olaf will shit on Kayle like all you can do is rush a zhonyas and sit under tower (if he ghost r dives you use zhonyas when you're under tower and if your R is still up he cant do anything to you after) and just try to roam while he's freezing. I think I fucked up my League somehow... whenever I start up the client it works fine. The problem arises when I get past champion select.

While Amumu fits the description more, I've found that Naut and Rammus are a lot better for climbing.

Also Skarner usually works like a charm, Trinity Force is all the damage you need to be able to kill squishies if not respected while being able to take a hell of beating. Some matchups are heavily skewed towards one of the sides therefore pushing/trading back is very risky and jungle help goes a long way.
A good example of this is Riven vs GP, GP can barely farm safely and a successful gank means he can have a breathing room/good back to not get completely shit on and be useful later on.

If they'd played safe and pinged for a gank when they needed one instead of letting the enemy get fed I would've happily fucking ganked, they didn't need to give 2 kills 40cs, let him take them down to 20% health AND then they decided to ask for a gank.
