I've recently come back to wow after a several year hiatus and a cross-continental move. I no longer have my old account so I'm taking the opportunity to roll a mage this time around.
I'm leveling through WoD right now and it's becoming more and more apparent that I'm going to have to pick a spec and stick to it, when it comes to things like gear and (I assume) artifacts.

Least proc-reliant spec, very influenceable burst; if I want to do a ton of damage right off the bat I can without waiting for a 15% proc. Has my favorite artifact and artifact tree, and that's influencing me a lot right now. Pretty mobile while still doing a lot of damage, but frost can kite for days while spamming the weaker ice lance nonstop.

Since ice barrier and frost nova are now the only two elemental baseline spells, frost triggers my autism the least of the lot. It's great for kiting with ice lance but I hate the fact so much of it is just waiting for a god damn proc of fingers or brain freeze.
Right now the biggest selling point for frost is that I can fantasize about my water elemental doing terrible things to me

Huge open world nuking capabilities. You can sit at four arcane charges and nuke everything at max damage, since there's gaps every few seconds to let your mana recharge, unlike in longer raid battles. Honestly feels pretty empty, though. Half the time I'm just getting up to 4 arcane charges, dropping rune of power, applying the DoT, then spamming arcane blast until missiles proc and then using that.
I get that it's ultimately about not running out of mana, but aside from that it feels like there's something I'm not getting.

What's /wowg/'s favorite mage spec to play, all endgame viability aside, and why?

Is there any point speed lvling from 90-110 for your first character? My understanding is that you have to complete all the main quests to be able to fly your mount which usually means that you'll hit the lvl cap anyway trying to unlock flight.

You crit all the time as a fire mage, though.
I guess I chose the wrong words, it is the most proc reliant, but you proc hot streak all the time. I'm not even very well geared and my crit chance is about 40%, I imagine with some high level gear you crit almost half the time.

And even without that, if I want to drop some trash I can just double fire blast, pyro, flame on, and repeat.
Having such a big hand in your own luck is pretty satisfying, I think.

I'm the complete opposite I think. Other than Shadowmoon valley, I hated every single zone with a passion. In legion I love them all, especially highmountain and val'sharah. I try to like Azsuna, but it just has too much water and I don't have a waterstrider yet, plus the story didn't really feel that good to me.
