I was discussing a game idea with my flat mates which was immediately shot down because it was almost impressively bad.
I somehow got the idea while eating a sleeve of Oreos that you could have a 2-4 player game, where one player is a hand and the other players are oreos hidden in a sleeve of 30 or so oreos. All the oreos can move around, and the hand tries to eat all of the player oreos in a limited amount of time. if the hand eats all the other players, he wins, but if the oreos survive they win!
Upon revisiting it I figured it was an "oreofied" dead by daylight with some of the functionality taken away! so what makes that a good idea vs my terrible, terrible idea?

Me and a friend are going to be working on a small game together. He wants to beef up his portfolio before graduation, and it's always been one of my goals to produce a game.
We are planning on making a 2d sidescroller, and are going to be using unreal 4. We picked unreal 4 because he has a background of C++ knowledge, but I'm more visual, so their blueprint wysiwyg editor appealed to me.
Do you think that this is a good engine for us to work together in? Or did I make a mistake?
Thank you

>>156779345

>>
>>156779261
UE4 is easily the best 3D engine.
I don't know if I'd use it for 2D though, unless you actually plan on utilising the engine by making something more like Trine rather than 2D sprites.
>>
>>156779261
This guy >>156779420 is lying, Unity3D is better for both 3D and 2D!
>>
>>156779261
As long as you both work on something separately, you'll do fine. You work on the art and level design, he works on gameplay and the raw code.
>>
>>156779261
>Do you think that this is a good engine for us to work together in? Or did I make a mistake?

That is a very subjective question. Let me tell you why. The game engine should be chosen based on your requirements and the kind of output you wish to have with your game. And since you mentioned your friend has knowledge of C++, that's reason enough.

Always select the engine you think you will be most comfortable working with. You can make selection based on several factors such as the programming language, visual appeal, ease of use, etc.

Hope it helped.

I feel like I'm going to get mocked for this, but here goes. As far as I know, visual novels/dating sims are only made in the Japanese style.
Yes, Visual Novels are infamous for being porn games, but a) perverts aren't unique to Japan, and b)not all of visual novels are porn-centric. Quite a number (Steins::Gate and Ever17) feature compelling stories and ideas. So they have potential at least, and the genre itself is a legitimate form, just as romance is a legitimate literary and film genre. But visual novels only ever done with anime characters, even when made by Western firms.
We have Mass Effect and Dragon Age and other branching narrative games that feature romance options, of course. But there, the romance element is a sub-plot at best and a minigame at worst. And you have Hatoful Boyfriend, which lampoons the whole genre.
But this still seems like an opportunity for innovation. Is anyone aware, has this been tried? And if not, why might that be?
>>

What >>156784452 said is correct. Read it as if it was a, let's say, 300-page book.
Try to work on a small game while reading. Everytime you learn something new that inspires you, try to code it into the project.

The problem with most tutorials on GM is that they either:
>are overlong and get people bored on simple stuff
>are too short and don't teach the newcomers how to be creative with their code
>try to put some concepts like making you think there's only 1 way of programming something

Parroting a tutorial is the best way to learn. Just don't stop when it stops.
Keep adding features. Do it over but slightly different. Make an effort to understand what the code does and why. And if you don't, read the documentation.

I intended to put those panels only on my site, but it's actually a good idea to put a reference to the game (logo + url), so those panels could be used outside the site. Thanks for the idea.

Pic related is another panel, showing advanced features. There is empty space to put the ad too.

Fresh idea from a night of no sleep. You are employed by some sort of Space Federation/ wildlife management thing. Your job: send various probes out to a planet to catalogue and capture alien life forms. If you lose too many probes, or are an otherwise unprofitable employee, you're fired.

The more you discover about an alien (through observation and analysis), the more profitable it is, but of course the zoos like the dangerous ones, so capturing something that could wreck your probes can be worth the risk.

depends on how complex the turn based system is.

Really, a turn manager ain't that hard. Neither are basic stats like "speed" or "damage".

What gets hard is when you have multiple attacks that have to be unlocked in various ways, perform different functions with different types of damage, or sometimes no damage at all, have multiple potential targets, both player and AI, etc.

It depends on how complex your game is
If it's simple stuff like attack/defense and a few skills and no timed hits/animations nor equipment/modifiers it is super simple
The more features you add the more complex it gets obviously, and then there is balancing which can be a pain depending on how complex the system it

Honestly I'd rather do more art and animation then fuck with code I know nothing about.

First person action oriented dungeon crawling.
I got some old webms showing some of the invetory and the abysmal test UI but those are out of date.

There are some stealth mechanics in place. In fact each of those lights (with the exception of atmospheric lighting like in the cell) is putting a certain light value on the character, making him visible to enemies (think: thief TDP).
At present you can lean around corners, you can pick up, consume and equip items. There is some basic AI and pathfinding and a dummy zombie enemy with attack animations and whatnot. Also there is a full RPG character system in the background, with sprinting, stamina consumption, weight etc.

I will be implementing the combat system soon. In fact for an old version of the game I already did that quite some time ago. REALLY old WebM related (UE 4.10 in fact). The current version doesn't feature that yet (despite being far more feature complete), but just so you get an idea where the fun is going.

Welcome to Fantasy Town

Create a new town
or join a town

Join

In this town, the farmer and the adventurer are already in use.
You can be Merchant or Priest.

Choose Priest.

==Priest arriving Sequence Plays==
Greeted by the INN owner
showing the church:
there is a lot of work to do
INN Owner: "I'm glad you are here. The people in this town behave really bad lately, especially [Insert Name of Adventure Player]. He tried to steal from the shop, because the former Merchant of this town has already left for a long time."
INN Owner returns to his INN.

Priest Player is controling now his charakter and can do things.

-Bringing his church forward
-visiting farmer player
-visiting adventurer player, when he is in town

Note:
Every Class has his own gameplay and little story which progresses.
But it connects the storys and quests of the different players once in a while.
visible changes, when game progresses, buildings can change. Example: A rich merchant has a fancy looking store.

Biggest inspirations:
Animal Crossing
and Princessmaker

The goal of the game:
The game is finite, there can be several different endings depending on what choices the different players make.
Romance is possible between female and male players.

Risk of Rain, which was made in GM, has an online co-op mode. You connect through a third-party IP program like Hamachi (just like with Minecraft for example), open a room, tell the other guy to join it, insert the port number and hit "Play". It works quite decently, so yeah.

As if God would think this way.

In English language, I don't always know what to capitalize, because you capitalize less than we do.

Why is God capitalized anyway? It's not his name, it's a title. We don't capitalize human, do we? God's name on the other hand should be capitalized.

if i could give you a tip, instead of reading a bunch of wikipedia pages, look up some written histories of norse mythology in book form and buy/torrent them. wiki pages are generally vague when it comes to mythological stuff because many different sources have different interpretations or different characterizations. if you read a single authors interpretation then each of the characters will feel a lot less vague, plus you're just going to get significantly more information from an actual book than wikipedia.

With DirectX you are limited to Windows only.
OpenGL lets you run on all platforms, even mobile.
There's also Vulkan getting traction.

Most of the time, though, you will want to use something above it, like the mentioned SDL by you, or even other more specific libraries.

What are your favorite character archetypes? Things like:

- The reluctant hero, that just wants to live peacefully but is forced into saving the world
- The caregiver, that protects their friends no matter the cost and hates injustice
- The jester, that just wants to have fun & live in the moment
- etc.

So I'm trying to devise an in-game command prompt to run scripts and stuff.

What all should I be considering here?

So far I'm thinking:

A connection to the scripting language's VM (in this case Lua), in order to run single and multi-line commands.

A history of previous commands
(std::vector<std::string>)

And somehow draw it so screen, but I'll worry about that later and it isn't the Console's responsibility anyway.

Doing a spaceship landing mini game in GM. I have the ship falling fine with gravity, and I have two thrusters on it right now, the top and bottom thrusters on the front to nose-up and down.

Using:
///Front Up thrust
physics_apply_local_impulse(48, 48, -200, 0);

However, this doesn't seem to take into account the current angle of the ship, it just pushes up or down slightly on the nose. Anyone know to have it apply directional force too? I should be able to spin the ship by holding either front thruster button down.

All time is inherently 'unproductive'. Game dev is as unproductive as anything else. Only a tiny fraction of anyone developing games will make any money off them, so amateur game development is equally unproductive as beating a video game.

Something I've been wondering as my systems get more complex:
How much bullshit can Unity handle every frame?

I got my starting sprites in for mario finally, and I realized that the sprite render order has to be all over the place for them to be both parented and layered properly.
This means that all the sprites need their render orders to be organized/controlled.

The fix I found is to make a script that basically gets the sprites of the gameobject, then adds a huge factor (like 100-1000) multiplied by the Z position of the gameobject.
That makes sense, but can Unity really handle it well? With potentially hundreds of sprites moving about the scene (Mario, enemies and items) getting their render orders shuffled around?

>what did you need 5 3D softwares for?
Sift and PMVS (ran through Visual SFM) calculates sparse and dense point clouds.
Cloud Compare merges the many dense point cloud data files you get.
Meshlab can use these files to build a polygonal mesh, and then project a texture file onto it.
Blender can render these files, so they look right.

The next steps involve using Instant Mesh to create a lowpoly mesh, which is brought back to Blender for UV remaking, and then to xNormals (together with the high-poly mesh) to bake normal/bump, cavity, occlusion maps, etc.
It's a long fucking hike from camera to video game land.

>>156831556
On hold ;_;

>>156831690
Hah, yeah, I guess that would fit the style.

However, now that I have tested really detailed and large stuff like this, what I want to do is recreate a full 1-room cabin (both exterior and interior - without furniture and stuff). Then, I want to capture enough furniture and ornaments to fles out the whole scene, while keeping it all low-poly enough for video games.
It's going to be difficult, but if I can manage it, I think I could make my self useful for real 3D dev.

you could add cameras to the mirror object with wide FOV

then apply a transform to geometry that warps the image from this camera according to geometry, (beyond simple objects I don't know the math for it)

This is obviously expensive,

You could potentally bake static scenery into a G-buffer, store as a texture, then blit these textures and write only dynamic geo to these buffers (this ignores indirect lighting)

or just render to a plane and warp it somehow

any other suggestions AGDG,

I have made them, no one will buy a vhdl video game (unless they are FPGA enthusiast because noone is going to fabricate that and simulations of hardware are incredibly slow)

and FPGA clock rates are way slow compared to ASIC implementations so it wouldn't be more efficient than running on real system, it could work but it wouldn't be more cost effective given the current technology

Also I suggest Verilog, it is more standard afaik, and there are more tools for sythesis if you are really interested in hardware game/system development.

and generally for programming games in a language like this, you'd want to instantiate some CPU or special purpose processor with your own machine code

ideally you would create a compiler for this machine so you're not editing assembly like a retard (always fucking bugs just trying to add and if statment)

if you are really interested I can give you more info

Hey, thanks.

I do enjoy the capturing part quite a bit - It's all the after-work which is tough.
I might take your advice, man. I sure could need the income.
>>
>>156832115

>However, now that I have tested really detailed and large stuff like this, what I want to do is recreate a full 1-room cabin (both exterior and interior - without furniture and stuff). Then, I want to capture enough furniture and ornaments to fles out the whole scene, while keeping it all low-poly enough for video games.
It's going to be difficult, but if I can manage it, I think I could make my self useful for real 3D dev

Please, please, please document this process.

I know you might be worried that "oh no then people won't pay me to do it", but believe me, 99% of people would be too lazy to follow your instructions and the 1% of us who aren't would be massively helped.
>>
>>156836184
I might do that, Anon.

Most of the stuff is explained in online tutorials, but I've also hit a bunch of road bumps which I've had to find solutions to.
The high-poly part of the process is almost perfectly streamlined for me now, and if I can manage to find a good flow for retopologizing I might turn the experience into a simple guide.
>>
>>156836164

>I do enjoy the capturing part quite a bit - It's all the after-work which is tough.

I've posted this a few times, but it'd be such a fucking help for architecture / large level design. Just take a trip out to the setting, wait for an overcast day, take a fuckton of photos, and bam, you've got your level. Imagine if the developers of STALKER had this shit. A few trips to the zone and you've got a fucking decade's worth of game material.
>>
>>156836374
I know you've posted some basic tutorials before but I found them pretty lacking, and what's more don't seem to mesh with what you've been telling us in threads about needing all these different programs. I'm worried if you suddenly disappear this technique gets lost from AGDG forever.
>>
>>156836381
Definitely.

The main issue would be elevation. To capture high walls and roof you'd have to be able to place your camera at a good height, to avoid distortion and blurred textures.

I might invest in a long camera pole myself.
>>
>>156835580
Hey, that's not a half bad idea.

As for what everything is...it's just supposed to be surreal-like game objects, I suppose. Maybe that's a little vapid.
>>

>I know you've posted some basic tutorials before but I found them pretty lacking
Do you mean the pixelart stuff?
That isn't so much a recipe to follow, as it is a proof of concept for how dodge and burn can be used to add depth and "3D" effects to pixelart.

Capturing 3D environment and objects is a much more linear process, which doesn't really involve a lot of creativity or talent (beyond choosing your objects).
>>

Wow.
Y'know, I really didn't think I'd take this further than just a small thing one week when my thesis was boring me.

But fuck, I'm now at the point where I can start doing test animations. Threw these together real quick after ironing out the sprite layer order stuff just to make sure it was possible/easy enough to do.

It is. I love it. This is going to be by far the most fun part of this for me, since I really do prefer animation above all else.

It's too late to really dig into it tonight, but damn this just made it all a lot more real for me. I'm fucking excited.

I want to make a Paper Mario fan game above all else.
Yeah, I know Nintendo will try to smash it down the moment they really catch wind of it. But I really don't care until that point.

If I get a C&D order, I'll comply and take things down, and probably start working on making my own thing from the ground up.
But I really don't want it to come to that.

I want to use the Mario world. I want to play with the player expectations and views on the Mario world, especially in how much more modern/unique the chapter areas I want to do are.

If it wasn't mario, then the hero going to some institutionalized prison or an amish farm would just make things seem edgy.
But if Mario is going to a prison full of different races like toads, goombas etc, or an amish town of koopas, then there's something familiar being put in a different light.
The way i want it, it simply won't work if not in the Mario universe.

>>156837762
I can try to move it back more. And the shoes do tilt a bit in the idle, but I didn't do it too much so maybe it could be more exaggerated.
>>

>If I get a C&D order, I'll comply and take things down, and probably start working on making my own thing from the ground up. But I really don't want it to come to that.

What the fuck are you talking about

It's not a matter of IF it comes to that, it's a matter of WHEN. Why would you intentionally sabotage yourself like that? Just make sure all the work is usable and don't tie yourself into the 'mario world' too much.

>The way i want it, it simply won't work if not in the Mario universe.

I'll agree that they're eventually going to do it.
But I will keep on my way like this, anonymously, till they do.
If I can get the game finished while keeping myself unknown, then releasing it will be the end of any C&D they could give me, cause at that point it's out on the internet and they really can't do anything about it.

Yes, I could make them "iron wolves" instead of chain chomps.
But people don't have an innate connection already to whatever race I could try to design that would replace them.

To replace the races with something that's just "not a chomp" or "not mario" then it loses the charm and just comes off as cheap.

If I make something whole new, with everything in the universe made from the ground up, then it'd have to be something entirely different, like what Paper Bugs dev is doing. I really think he's pretty clever and dedicated to be going through all that and designing all those things in such a cohesive way.
I don't want to do that. I have the ideas I want to make, and they work best with the current heuristics and knowledge of the Mario series.

Sure, it's a bit autistic, but I want to make a Mario game, not "Paper Bob" or "Paper Fruits" unless there's literally no other option. I don't want the cheap feel of being "just off" Mario nor the struggle of establishing a whole world of races/items/etc.

>>
>>156839350
Ok, if you insist on shooting yourself in the foot this way, here's one way to do it:

For the entire development period, don't use ANY mario references. Replace every "mario" in the script with a new word that has nothing to do with mario (you might get away with "plumber"). Use placeholder graphics. Are you making your own sprites or ripping them from a real game? Either way, replace the real sprites with nonsense sprites at the same resolution.

This means you can post progress and not get C&Ded.

Then, when you are ready to release, search and replace everything back to mario, and add the graphics in one pass. Release it anonymously somewhere.

>>
>>156839768
LBP isn't really a question though.
Really curious about pokemon and braid though
>>
>>156839727
Honestly, that's Plan B.

That's what I plan to do if I get caught and a C&D is sent before I can finish.
I don't want to spend time doing a bunch of shitty placeholder sprites and animating to them if I don't have to.

If entirely necessary, I would switch it to some knockoff during development and just keep doing the Mario sprites behind the scenes, releasing them both, the knockoff publically, leaving stuff out as open source and the proper mario one anonymously sometime after it so I could claim someone just used my current files.
It's sketchy though and I could get caught doing it, at which point I don't know what would happen, as well as doubling the amount of work I'd need to do as I am remaking the sprites to get good quality ones. So I don't want to resort to that unless I have to.
>>
>>156839987
turing completeness is a meme, really

there are useful "computers" that are not turing complete, and there are useless "computers" that are, such as pokemon, magic the gathering, etc.

In Blender, how can I make objects like hair or flowing clothing follow a character and I suppose jiggle as they move?
>>
>>156842079
It's hard to really describe it.

Like, the things I want to play with are reliant on people's past experiences/knowledge of Mario characters.

>Having a toad as a villain
>The idea of my main villain being a "shy gal" when there's only ever been shy guys and the kind of questions that raises
>Having interludes with Princess Peach where she actually goes off on her own little adventure, not because she was captured but because she was free to do so.
>etc.

The plans I have are made for playing with the world of Mario and how things work.
If I were to do a new world, even one that's just similar to Mario, I'd need to basically chuck all the ideas I've built up so far out the window, cause they wouldn't work without the pre-existing examples/knowledge, and trying to build up said knowledge through the game would take more time and exposition that would make it all too drawn out.

Basically just have your games advertise each other. When someone plays "Fuckville 3" he should see a link to "Assblaster EX" somewhere. It might be something like "check out my other games!" or it might just be a banner ad, depending on how much you think people like you.

You want to do this because nobody will recognize you as a developer and extremely few people will ever click on the "more by this dev" page. By advertising for yourself you can raise the odds that someone who downloads one of your games will see the others too.

And I love good scifi tropes, crazy AI, humanoid aliens that speak english, humans as diplomatic traders.

>I'm making a game, but also a product. It needs to be marketable.

Alpha Centauri sold like hotcakes and that shit was anything but unoriginal. When it comes to sci-fi, people like seeing new and exciting things, especially considering that whether you like it or not, you're going to be compared to FTL right out of the gate. I'm not saying you have the skills of the AC writing team, but you could try something different.

Like, right off the mark - why not have a race with no hierarchical structure? Like the Borg before they were ruined by First Contact? Sure, it's not super original but at least it's somewhat different to the norm. Or a race whose culture is entirely founded upon dialogue, and functions entirely in pairs, with every single position operated by two individuals? Or a race whose ships are always operated by large families, with the progenitor of the family as the head of the ship?

like just do something, all of those that you've listed are so fucking boring, have at least ONE interesting race

I've personally always really liked Fungi for alien race. Make each super colony an 'individual' in some capacity. An entire planet is a single fungoid entity, a ship is one entity, an so forth.

As a musicanon its pretty ridiculous to see someone say.
If you think you can learn to play music in some sort of mathematical procedure sense like programming, you are pretty dang dumb. Your music will probably sound like stiff, generic, unenjoyable shit if you have no sense of creativity or musicality

How do you represent levels and grades with a race that has no hierarchy?

I see where you are going, but your ideas aren't feasible in a game. Lore has to adhere to gameplay, not the other way around.

With four symmetrical races you need similar hierarchies. Once you start going down the unique race path, balancing becomes a nightmare.

I would rather have boring lore and interesting gameplay, than interesting lore and boring gameplay.

Not that guy, but I have to agree with him regarding the dangers of being too generic. From what I've seen of your skill tree and now your ranks, your game pretty much looks like flat, uncreative space game #12313787.
Not much point in worrying about race balance if your game looks too boring and unoriginal to bother picking up.
Unless you've got some amazing gameplay gimmick in the wings I wouldn't give your game a second look and I already have pseudo-marketing exposure to your game. What do you think the average consumer is going to think when their only exposure to your game is an extremely generic looking logo and title on steam's recently released page? Will they even click through to the demo video?

>I would rather have boring lore and interesting gameplay, than interesting lore and boring gameplay.

You know what's interesting gameplay? Having four races that play differently. You know what's boring gameplay? Having four races that play exactly the same except for a fucking skilltree.

Do you think Starcraft is shit because the races are different? Do you think they should all have been Terran but with different stats?

I was thinking of scrapping the aliens altogether and having just human factions.

Staunch traditionalist humans (pure), humans that worship genetic engineering, cybernetic humans and then completely transcended robots. Four factions, four different views on humanity.

I thought the bird aliens and cephalopod aliens were unique, but I guess not. The issue with going too alien is people won't identify with them. For instance Stellaris had a huge array of aliens from fungi to mammals to fish, but you never had any interactions with them, there was this RTS distance.

I didn't identify with any of the aliens in Mass Effect, nor would I have played them if they were available. The challenge for my game is to make 4 equally attractive factions that people want to play.

I also have story events and I'm not going to craft 4 unique storylines for each race. There just isn't that much development time.

Then again, I was thinking about doing brown space elves.

It's not Starcraft though.

It's like Path of Exile. You have seven classes who all play exactly the same, except for their position in the skill tree. The only difference is their backstory and skin.

That is my issue. The races are identical, they are just different skins and backstories. That is the point. The only thing the player is choosing is the look.

I can't stress how phenomenally bad an idea virtually everything that you've just written is. There are a billion space 4x and strategy games on the market now, if you want to stand out at all, both your world and your gameplay have to be novel and memorable.
You cannot make a strategy game in 2016 with four races that are all functionally the same, let alone all humans with different hats. I wouldn't play a game like that for free.

As a player I don't give a fuck about identifying with a race, I care about whether their gameplay and characterization is novel and interesting compared to the other races. If all your races have identical gameplay, what's the point? I don't give a shit about playing generic bird race or generic lizard race if the gameplay is the same and if anything I might drop the game out of disappointment once I realised that there was no difference.

I hate to say it, but you genuinely need an ideas guy otherwise you're going to waste your time making something that isn't going to appeal to anybody.

The closest friendly dog is always going to be the dog that has this ability, so it will always heal itself. The damaged clause is necessary since it means something according to the game's rules.

As written the ability causes a dog to heal itself if it is damaged or the closest damaged dog other than itself if it is not damaged.

In general, while it is not grammatically incorrect to have two adjectives for a single noun (the shit, bad post was shit and bad) it sounds much more awkward, especially in the context of an ability's tooltip. Avoid it wherever possible.
