I think it was an extrermely good compromise.
His shield is still a very powerful tool in the right hands and he's still the god of window peeking, but now you don't have to deal enough damage to kill an entire team just to hit his fucking head.

Now its pretty much if you die to blackbeard like that you're not approaching him right.
