Better Power Armor is pretty good if you don't already have it.

It makes it so Power armor absorbs 100% of the damage you take, and you only take damage to limbs where armor breaks/isn't covering, it's pretty good. Just make sure not to tick the 'balance' option of having the armor pieces have lower HP, because that's stupid and shitty.

Is it possible to get rid of some of the guns from weaponsmith extended/calibers from new calibers? There's so many fucking pointless/useless/ugly calibers and guns. Kind of pissed that basically every pistol can spawn with a receiver that uses one of like 30 'pistol' calibers.

I torrented NV and all it's DLCs, didn't buy it legally

Having trouble getting the graphical overhauls to work, stuff like ENB, seems all of them require a legit copy of the game

Does anybody know which leveled list entries to alter if I'm looking to increase the rarity of specific weapons appearing on enemy spawns? I've looked through the LLs and it's not clear if I just need to alter the "chance none" on some entries, or if I need to overhaul the LLs themselves somehow.

There's lists for the weapons themselves, and there's lists for enemies which show at what levels they start using better weapons. If there's a "chance none" to spawn an Assault Rifle for an enemy at a certain level, do they just wind up bare-handed if you alter the "chance none" entry or do they revert to a lower-level weapon on that list?

I don't mind the tedium, I've had to mess with radio files in the CK before and it's mind-numbing but doable. I'm just not sure if I'm barking up the wrong tree and should be coming at it from another angle rather than messing with the chances that weapons will spawn.

So, from what I understand, if I check the leveled lists that the enemy uses and alter the lists so that they're unlikely to wind up with an Assault Rifle, they'll re-roll to get another weapon from other lists that they use, right? I'm just scared I'll be winding up with bare-handed enemies after level 17.

Yeah. I noticed that some enemies have multiple lists associated with them, and some have none. Synths are split up into melee, semi-auto, and automatic weapon users as separate forms (I think I'm using that term right).

Gunners and raiders, though, pull from various leveled lists. Those lists also reference other lists. For example, the Gunners reference lists of semi-auto rifles, and those lists refer to lists that contain specific types of semi-auto rifles. It's all nested, and it was becoming confusing which lists needed to be altered so that I wind up with lots of pipe weapons and very, very few (99% chance none) pre-war type weapons.

I'm guessing I have to dig around in the leveled lists and try to sort out which ones determine the chance that a gun will be a pipe weapon or not. It's tricky to figure out exactly what is being used by what, probably because I'm not aware of the CK's full set of features.

Ok, I see now: "calculate for each item in count" means that it'll recalculate the count if the "chance none" triggers nothing. So as long as that's ticked, they'll at least spawn with pipe guns if the other weapons don't roll. Am I understanding that correctly?

If so, then all I need to do is go in to each entry for each kind of enemy and increase the chance they won't roll Combat/Assault Rifles and the like, and they'll still be coming at me with pipe guns as I level up.

The rolling plains were enough to break line of sight to far away locations and meant that you had to actually explore to find new locations. NV's canyons limit your choice of direction and funnel you to locations. It's less pretending to be more.

I'll take the wrecked tunnels that actually go somewhere over the Oblivion-style copypaste mines/caves that are all laid out with the same simple (random_critter_type) -> couple of traps -> locked door with 1 piece of loot x 30 that NV went for. I think part of it is that fallout basically has to look like America with chrome and poop, whereas Skyrim can look like whatever the designers imagine because it's magic fantasy. A factory in Fallout is modelled after a highly-exciting real factory, at least visually speaking. A location in Skyrim doesn't have that problem.

1. The shooting isn't total ass like it was in Fo3/NV

2. Graphically, the removal of the filter bullshit made the game a lot more tolerable. And the addition of all the fog/godrays shit has created many ATMOSPHERIC AS FUCK, moments, only tied by some of the better moments of Skyrim

3. The new perk system replacing the shitty as fuck 1-100 skill system.(as you mentioned)

4. Crafting is far better handled, far more useful, and much deeper, then either Fallout 3 or NV

5. The removal of Karma, which no one liked, made the game a lot less black/white morally

6. The removal of item degradation, which no one liked, made the game a lot more balanced

7. Power armor actually feel like power armor

8. All the factions actually have roughly equal amounts of content, and are portrayed as being roughly equally flawed, unlike the massive lopsided situation that greatly favored the NCR in NV, which made playing the Legion basically pointless

9. The companions were pretty well handled IMO, and I find them far less annoying then those of NV(sans ED-E and Raul)

10. Bethesda took their already great world design even further, with lots more notes/stuff between raider groups and the like, that makes the world feel more connected, especially when those terminal entries and raider conversations change based on what groups you have taken out

I did this as main quest for a little prostitute, who would not fight, cast spells, or use companions. All she had to do was walk a circuit through all cities, taverns, and villages.

Took me almost eleven hours. She only got raped on four or five occasions. Although, one group of bandits dragged her to their camp and used her for three days, before she could finally get away. And there was a large pack of wolves who had fun with her for almost a whole in-game day.

Reputation was a terribly system in NV for the same reason it was back in Morrowind, it caused blanket approval gains/losses in everyone in a faction, and totally ignored any sort of individual thinking within members of a faction.

It also causes a lot of dumb "psychic NPC" moments, where they just KNOW you killed those three guys in the middle of the wasteland, when no one was around to see you.

The scripted trigger based system thats games like Fallout 4 uses achieves all of the same stuff, but is far more controlled, and thus leaves far fewer "psychic NPC" moments.

The only real difference is the lack of a menu on the pipboy. Which, technically, they could have added, it just would have been pointless.

The 1-100 skill system was garbage, for a number of reasons
1. When it came to skills like lockpicking/hacking, literally only ranks 25/50/75/100 mattered, since those were the ranks that unlocked higher level locks/terminals
2. When it came to skills like weapon skills, or things like medicine, the bonuses per point were so small that only every 20-25 points actually gave you noticeable damage/healing increases
3. The skill system also made SPECIAL largely pointless, as you could have a 1 in INT, but still have a 100 in science and be super smart, and a 1 in charisma, but a 100 in speech, and be able to convince everyone of whatever
4. There was no level restrictions, so you could easily cheese the game by stat dumping into a stat right from the get go, destroying any sort of balance, and making things like skill requirements on weapons a useless mechanics.

On the other hand, the perk system in Fallout 4
1. Changes lockpicking/hacking into a 5 ranked perk, like it basically was in the skill system were only 25/50/75/100 mattered, with the 5th being a bonus power
2. Make increases to things like weapons/medicine more powerful, by offering +20% increases per perk instead of the +14% increases we had per 20 points in fo3 or NV, and more noticeably powerful, by combing them into those 5 perks, so each perk was far more noticeably powerful.
3. IT made SPECIAL actually mean something, as now you actually need a high INT and Charisma score to be good at INT/CHA based things
4. Changing them into perks also made adding a level lock on them possible, allowing the game to be far more balanced

Skill checks SHOULD be few and far between for the reason they are in all modern RPGs.

Skill checks in old RPGs consisted of two things
1. physical checks
2. "knowledge" checks.
And both of them existed for one reason, a lack of ability to do those things in direct ways.

However, this isn't 1993 anymore, and we do have the technology now.

When it comes to physical checks
--We don't need perception checks to spot enemies, or traps, or hidden buttons, since we can now display them on the screen fully modeled
--We dont need agility checks to determine if we are fast or agile enough to get through a series of traps, we can now just move our character through them in real time.
etc. etc.

When it comes to knowledge checks, games now have the ability to provide the information in far more immersive ways rather then "you now know becuase you get a skill to X level"

This is why all modern RPGs, be they Mass Effect, Witcher, Deus Ex, Skyrim, or even Fallout, don't have things like INT, or lore, checks.

They simply provide that information in books, notes, terminal entries, email, or something similar and check to see if you have read those instead of checking against your stats directly.

In modern gaming, the only checks that should exist are
A. charisma checks, since speech is one of the last things we can't directly do ourselves.
B. Crutches used when there simply isn't the dev time or money to make something like a mini game for.

Example, the robotics expert check in Nuka world, and the medical check in Far Harbor, only exist because it wouldn't be cost efficient to make an immersive minigame, similar to that of hacking/lockpikcing, when it would only be used for that one situation. Before Fallout 3 came out Todd gave an interview where he said they had, at one point, decided to make a surgery mini-game, where you had to sew your injuries shut and stuff, but ultimately found it broke the flow of the game.

If you really think that the medicine check in Far Harbor would still exist as a typical check, had they found a way to implement that surgery minigame for Fallout 4 in a way they felt didn't break the flow of the game, you are mistaken.

Checks like that ONLY exist as a crutch for modern RPGs when the devs can't make up a minigame like hacking/lockpicking that they feel is fun enough.

If they can do it they will, becuase its far more immersive then just a check, which are largely archaic relics from the late 80's early 90's days of technologically limited RPGs.

I'm trying to do an Unarmed run and the game feels like it's trying to railroad me into making my character a generic slurry. I put all my points into Strength and Luck and it still feels like any other playthrough. All the early quests, like clearing the neighborhood or rescuing the Minutemen, don't really have any incentive to play them again beyond the earlygame XP.

So I'm about halfway through Fallout 1 and I have a question. How and Why is it so good? I actually care about the characters and want to finish the main story. With the Vault constantly running out of water everyday, it adds a sense of constant dread as I move about the Wasteland. The U.I took some getting used too but I like it. Even the side characters are memorable. Why aren't more RPG's like this?

Yeah, I sometimes think of Fallout 1 and it's a good feeling. It hits all the right notes.

Also, every major video game has to come out for consoles nowadays. I believe that was a contributing factor to the simplification of the Fallout series, since there's a lot of stuff you can get away with on one platform that you can't get away with when dealing with Sony and Microsoft.

That was how it worked in FO1 as well. You basically show up to their bunker, offer to help them with their Glow problem, and they give you a suit of T51 and send you on your merry way and then officially induct you into the order when you come back from that simple fetch quest.

I'd like to see mount weapons like a wrist/shoulder rocket launcher or ripper, and make it so wearing one of those under-armor things is actually a requirement or at least provides a large bonus. You can customize that as well.

Also, heavy weapons should have significant drawbacks if you are using them outside power armor and there should be more of them. Also, rifles and other 2 handed small arms can be held in one hand. Pistols can't be used at all.

Does anyone in the thread know of anyone working to make the raider elements of Nuka World as a level 1 alternative to Minutemen?
I want to take settlements as a raider, but I don't want to have to kill everyone for them.

Trouble is, I've just started up a new game, going for a heavy weapons run. I want to get brahmins and Abernathy Farm is the best place to get that. Trouble is, I'm not strong enough to do it the Minutemen way yet and if I could, I'd really like a fourth raider faction you can just join from the get go and do things the Nuka World way.
I am willing to try and do it myself if I can make heads or tails of the CK, but so far when looking I've not really seen enough to understand how it works.

Once you become director of the institute do you ever get an option to tell everyone "hey you know that evil shit we've been doing, let's stop it now".

I feel like the game is railroading me into betraying all my previous allegiances, when if this was real life you'd just restructure the institute to be more friendly and then explain to everyone in the commonwealth you're there to help.

Are the Tactical Thinking and End of the Line quests the only ways to officially get rid of the Railroad?
Normally I'd assume that just killing everyone in the Railroad HQ would be enough, but this is Fallout 4 we're talking about.

They're not Enclave vertibirds. The birds the enclave used were the upgraded VB2 model which were developed by the enclave with armor and weapons and all that fancy shit, the BoS are using older pre-war VB1s which are really just fancy helicopters with no weapons and little armor.

No, they do have nose-mounted machine guns and a gatling gun for the occupants to use but that's it.

They should have kept the roomier one that it's in the game files, you can easily fit like two or three power armored soldiers in it
